Reticulohistiocytoma (solitary epithelioid histiocytoma): a clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of 44 cases.

Reticulohistiocytoma and multicentric reticulohistiocytosis are designations for uncommon, incompletely characterized histiocytic proliferations of the skin or soft tissues. In this study, we analyzed a uniform group of 44 lesions composed of epithelioid histiocytes, comprising a subset of lesions originally designated as reticulohistiocytoma, and propose designating them as "solitary epithelioid histiocytoma" (SEH), in line with the recently published classification proposal for histiocytic disorders. There were 26 males and 18 females with a median age of 35 years (range, 2.5-74 years). All

Chondrosarcoma of the femur in Mazabraud's syndrome: A first case study.

Malignant transformation of fibrous dysplasia (FD) in long bones is rare (less than 1% of cases) and occurs in the form of osteosarcomas. They can occur on FD associated with multiple myxomas, which corresponds to Mazabraud syndrome. To our knowledge, only six cases of FD malignant transformation into osteosarcoma in the context of Mazabraud syndrome have been described. Here, we describe the first case of malignant transformation of femur FD into chondrosarcoma in a 51-year-old female patient. The patient had significant changes in the size and number of myxomas around the femur before the ma

Fibrous histiocytoma: a histological and statistical analysis of 155 cases.

Various salient histological features were rated from + to +++ in a semiquantitative evaluation of a series of 155 cases of fibrous histiocytoma. Relations between individual histological features, as well as between histological findings, localisation and size of lesions, and age or sex of the patient were tested statistically. Most impressive was an inverse proportional relationship between cellular and fibrillar densities: highly cellular fibrous histiocytomas chiefly showed little fiber formation. Accordingly, cases with marked fiber formation were distinguished by low cellularity. Based o

Rapidly growing Fibro-osseous pseudotumor of the digit: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Fibro-osseous pseudotumor of the digit is a rare benign lesion of subcutaneous tissue that typically arises in the parabone site of the proximal phalanx in young adult females. The lesion is histopathologically characterized by fibroblastic proliferation and osteoid formation. Good prognosis following complete surgical excision of the tumor has been reported, with a very low recurrence rate and no reports of malignant transformation. Despite its benign clinical behavior, the lesion can be mistaken for a malignant neoplasm, such as an extraskeletal or parosteal osteosarcoma, in ca

Large solitary fibrous tumour of the pleura: analysis of six cases.

BACKGROUND: A large solitary fibrous tumour of the pleura (SFTP) is a very rare occurrence. The aim of this study was to retrospectively review the clinical characteristics, surgical treatment and outcome of patients with a large SFTP operated on in our General Thoracic Surgery Unit. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the clinical records of six patients who underwent surgery for a huge SFTP between 1998 and 2004. RESULTS: Six patients (four men and two women, mean age 73.3 years) with a large SFTP (mean diameter 20.3 and mean weight 1265 g) underwent surgery during this perio

Malignant intracranial fibrous histiocytomas. Histologic, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies of two cases.

Two cases of malignant intracranial fibrous histiocytoma are presented. In Case 1 the tumour arose from the meninges and showed a disseminated spread throughout the neuroaxis. In the second case the tumour appeared to arise from within the brain substance. In this case surgical intervention and radiotherapy appeared to have achieved a cure, since no residual tumour was found at autopsy. The tumours were examined using ultrastructural and immunohistochemical techniques, which appeared advantageous in delineating this rare tumour from other intracranial neoplasms.

CT approach to benign nasopharyngeal masses.

The physical characteristics of the fascial planes of the nasopharynx provide a basis for categorizing growth patterns of the more common benign nasopharyngeal masses. Lymphoid hyperplasias are confined to the surface by the very dense pharyngobasilar fascia that lies beneath the submucosa. It takes a very aggressive process to cross this fascial plane. More laterally throughout the paranasopharyngeal space the loose areolar nature of the buccopharyngeal fascia permits benign tumors in this space to assume a spherical configuration. The carotid sheath is also a loose areolar arrangement that p

Ultrastructural observations on smooth muscle tumors.

The ultrastructure of a series of primary and metastatic smooth muscle tumors is reviewed. Myofilaments and other smooth muscle features were present in all primary leiomyosarcomas of the soft tissues and uterus. They were also present but were less plentiful in most of the metastatic leiomyosarcomas. Electron microscopy is therefore a useful method to establish the diagnosis of a suspected leiomyosarcoma. Stromal tumors of the gastro-intestinal tract may require correlated immunocytochemical and ultrastructural studies for their identification: 9 of the 50 cases examined were positive with im

PATZ1 Immunohistochemistry Aids in the Diagnosis of PATZ1-Rearranged Sarcomas.

PATZ1-rearranged sarcomas are diagnostically challenging due to their rather non-specific morphology and immunophenotype. These tumors are characterized by bland, round-to-spindled cells within a fibromyxoid matrix with variable microcysts, fibrous septa, hyalinized vessels, and cellular whorls. PATZ1-rearranged sarcomas are often positive for neural, skeletal muscle, and epithelial markers. Identification of these tumors is further complicated by the cryptic nature of the characteristic EWSR1::PATZ1 fusion, which generally makes fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis unreliable if rearra

Myxofibrosarcoma involving brachial plexus diagnoses by contrast-enhanced ultrasound: A case report.

RATIONALE: Myxofibrosarcoma most commonly arises as a slowly enlarging, painless mass. We describe an unusual case of low-grade myxofibrosarcoma in the axillary fossa, which infiltrated the brachial plexus, axillary artery, and axillary vein, causing severe pain. The low incidence and complex anatomical structure make imaging examination and surgery face great challenges. To the best of our knowledge, such presentation of a low-grade myxofibrosarcoma that showed an extreme infiltrative growth pattern and presented severe pain has not been reported before. PATIENT CONCERNS: We reported a case

Whole-exome sequencing identifies unique mutations and copy number losses in calcifying fibrous tumor of the pleura: report of 3 cases and review of the literature.

Calcifying fibrous tumor of the pleura (CFTP) is a rare mesenchymal tumor of unknown pathogenesis. The diagnosis often requires exclusion of other common entities. Our aim was to determine if genomic changes were associated with CFTP that could contribute to mechanisms underlying tumorigenesis. Three cases of CFTP with their corresponding uninvolved control lung tissue were identified. Two patients were male, and 1 was female (age range, 21-32 years). Tumors were multifocal in 2 cases and solitary in 1. Immunohistochemistry for STAT6, BCL-2, CD34, cytokeratin AE1/AE3, calretinin, desmin, S100,

Liposarcoma. A clinicopathologic subtyping of 52 cases.

Fifty-two cases of liposarcoma were analyzed clinicopathologically, and were grouped into the following five types: myxoid (28 cases), well-differentiated (14 cases), pleomorphic (4 cases), round-cell (3 cases), and mixed (3 cases). Three of the 28 myxoid tumors showed a pleomorphic pattern resembling that of the myxoid variant of malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and one of the 3 round-cell tumors was considered to be a malignant counterpart of hibernoma. Ages ranged from 22 to 86 years with the average age of 49 years, the average patients with myxoid or round-cell liposarcoma being over 10 ye

Biallelic NF1 Inactivation and Widespread Loss of Heterozygosity in a Subset of Unclassified Fibromyxoid Mesenchymal Neoplasms.

The integration of next generation sequencing into clinical practice has revolutionized the diagnosis of soft tissue tumors, enabling the discovery of novel tumor entities. We encountered a group of unclassified fibromyxoid mesenchymal neoplasms harboring biallelic NF1 loss of function (LOF) mutations, lacking features of neurofibroma or neurofibromatosis. The tumors were investigated by immunohistochemistry (IHC), targeted DNA and RNA sequencing and DNA methylation profiling. All cases occurred in male patients aged 4-76 years (median, 53 years). Tumor sites included the thigh (2), pelvis (2)

Indolent Abdominal Wall Round Cell Sarcoma With EWSR1-PATZ1 Fusion: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Soft tissue sarcomas with Ewing Sarcoma Breakpoint Region 1-POZ/BTB and AT Hook Containing Zinc Finger 1 (EWSR1-PATZ1) gene fusion represent a recently recognized subgroup of "round cell sarcomas with EWSR1-non-ETS fusions." These tumors exhibit diverse morphologic features and a polyphenotypic immunoprofile, often co-expressing neural and skeletal muscle markers. Their clinical behavior ranges widely, from indolent to highly aggressive. We report the case of a 57-year-old man presenting with a 6.5 cm right abdominal wall mass incidentally discovered on CT imaging performed for choledocholithi

A 10 cm pedunculated duodenal Brunner gland hamartoma, case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Brunner gland hamartoma is rare duodenal neoplasm. These benign lesions are usually presented by upper gastrointestinal bleeding and sometimes extend to cause intestinal obstruction. PRESENTATION OF THE CASE: We report a case of a 43-year-old male patient manifested with iron deficiency anemia. Upon investigations, computed topography (CT) scan found a dilated first part of the duodenum with presence of large pedunculated polyp. The histopathological examination revealed a submucosal lobular proliferation of duodenal Brunner's gland separated by a fine fibrous septum. No dysplas

Subclassification of pleomorphic sarcomas: How and why should we care?

Pleomorphic sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal neoplasms with widely varied clinical behavior but overlapping histologic appearances. The following guidelines are helpful when approaching the diagnosis of a pleomorphic sarcoma. (1) Be aware of the relative incidence of the various sarcoma types: several pleomorphic sarcomas are relatively common (e.g., dedifferentiated liposarcoma and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma), whereas others are exceptionally rare. (2) Pay attention to anatomic location: some pleomorphic sarcomas have a predilection for somatic soft tissues, especia

Proximal-type epithelioid sarcoma of the vulva with INI1 diagnostic utility.

Proximal epithelioid sarcoma (PES) is an extremely uncommon neoplasm of the vulva with an aggressive behavior. Recently, these authors experienced a case of proximal-type ES in a 41-year-old woman who was admitted for a rapidly growing mass in the right mons pubis. An about-1-cm-sized mass was initially noticed one and a half years earlier. The excised mass, however, was 8 cm in greatest dimension and was relatively well circumscribed. The cut surface was trabeculated, with multifocal hemorrhages and necroses. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of epithelioid rhabdoid cells with vesicular nu

Perioperative problems and treatment of a teenager with a juvenile angiofibroma refusing blood transfusion.

OBJECTIVES: Juvenile angiofibroma is a benign, non-encapsulated neoplasm, consisting of vascular and connective tissue. Its main feature is a local malignancy. In its clinical course it destroys adjoining structures, without metastasizing. It appears rarely, and is mainly found in boys at puberty. Among theories about the aetiology of juvenile angiofibroma, we must consider a haematoma-like lesion, an angioma with an extended fibrous component, or type of inflammatory allergic polyp. In the development of the lesion the participation of hormonal disorders on the pituitary gland-gonad axis is a
