Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) was first described in the pleura by Lietaud in 1767; later in 1870, Wagner described the localized nature of this type of tumor and Klemperer and Rabin classified pleural tumors into two types: diffuse mesotheliomas and localized mesotheliomas. Recent years have seen the redefinition of this neoplasm, due to better technology; it is now proven that this neoplasm may have multiple different extrapleural origins including the head and neck regions. This diversity of locations is related to the particular mesenchymal histogenesis of SFT which allows its development f

An association between autoimmune disease and malignancy, in particular lymphoproliferative neoplasms, has been reported, as has an increased incidence of extrahepatic malignancy in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). Monoclonal immunoglobulin elevations in PBC are rare, and there have been only three cases in the literature of PBC associated with multiple myeloma. We describe a patient who was concurrently diagnosed as having PBC and multiple myeloma, and emphasize the need to consider myeloma when evaluating monoclonal gammopathy in PBC. We also discuss the possible mechanisms for the associati

We report a rare case of a multiple sarcomatoid carcinoma of the jejunum with postoperative lung and brain metastases. The patient underwent jejunum segmental resection for intussusception and gastrointestinal bleeding. Multiple metastasis ofbrain and lung occurred 4 months after the operation, and the patient died for multiple organ failure 8 months after the surgery. Primary sarcomatoid carcinoma was difficult to diagnose at an early stage, and the diagnosis relies on optical microscopic and immunohistochemical observations. Currently no guidelinesare established for treatment for sarcomatoi

Phyllodes tumors are rare fibro-epithelial neoplasms; they may be classified as benign, borderline and malignant according to their histologic features of mitotic index, stroma pleomorphism and lesion outline. Their epidemiology is rather different from that of other breast neoplasms, since these lesions most frequently affect white Latin women 45 to 49 years old. The incidence of metastases is strictly correlated with the degree of histologic aggressiveness, although even small lesions, either borderline or with low malignancy, may metastasize. To assess the incidence of this neoplasm and its

Cowden's disease, or multiple hamartoma syndrome, is an uncommon condition with characteristic mucocutaneous lesions associated with abnormalities of the breast, thyroid, and gastrointestinal tract. We describe a 51-year-old man with hyperplastic polyposis of the entire alimentary tract as the most prominent feature of this disease. We also present a review of 85 cases of this entity as reported in the English medical literature, and summarize the pertinent findings.

It has been suggested that primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) may occasionally be caused by "multiple adenomas." If this is true, then selective excision of the enlarged glands should be curative in such cases. To examine this proposition, we reviewed the records of 1,962 patients with surgically proved HPT and culled all those who met the following criteria: (1) identification and excision of two enlarged and histologically hypercellular parathyroid glands, each weighing more than 70 mg, and (2) identification and preservation of two other normal-sized parathyroid glands. There were 38 such pa

A rare form of plasma cell dyscrasia characterized by associated polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M protein and skin changes has been termed the POEMS syndrome. The pathophysiology is unknown; plasma cell dyscrasia is essential; secondary manifestations are unexplained. We report a 67-year-old man with a 7-month history of progressive weakness and numbness of the legs. Clinical examination revealed sensorimotor polyneuropathy, predominantly affecting the lower extremities, hepatomegaly, and skin haemangiomas. Additional investigations disclosed IgG-lambda monoclonal serum protein,

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) is a predominantly inherited genetic disease with prevalence of 1 per 2500-3000 newborns and based on clear clinical criteria. In addition to common neurofibromas and gliomas of the visual pathways, these patients have a higher risk of various benign and malignant tumors throughout their lives including tumors of the central nervous system, membranes of peripheral nerves, gastrointestinal stromal tumors and leukemia. Endocrine diseases and neoplasms also occur in patients with NF-1 and can include extrarenal paraganglioma, primary hyperparathyroidism, gastroente

BACKGROUND: Medullary thyroid carcinoma and pituitary adenoma are neuroendocrine tumors and their coexistence has not been reported in the literature, previously. Medullary thyroid carcinoma is a neoplasm of the thyroid gland arising from parafollicular c-cells producing calcitonin, and pituitary adenoma is a benign hyperplasia of the cells of the pituitary gland. Coexistence of these neoplasms can be explained by being affected by simultaneous primary neoplasms or tumor-to-tumor metastasis phenomenon.

Hyperparathyroidism is a common endocrine disorder characterized by elevated levels of parathyroid hormone and hypercalcemia and is divided into 3 types: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Distinction between these types is accomplished by correlation of clinical, radiologic, and laboratory findings with pathologic features. Primary hyperparathyroidism occurs sporadically in 85% of cases with the remaining cases associated with multiple familial syndromes. The pathologic manifestations of primary hyperparathyroidism include parathyroid adenoma, parathyroid hyperplasia, and parathyroid carcinoma

Minimally invasive pulmonary segmentectomy allows adequate oncologic treatment in selected cases while preserving lung parenchyma and minimizing perioperative morbidity and length of hospital stay. Most lung segments can be resected as segmentectomies or as part of bisegmentectomies (as is the case for the lingula). However, the resection of individual basal segments can be particularly challenging. Although several variations of minimally invasive pulmonary segmentectomy have been described, I favor a fully thoracoscopic multiport approach that offers direct access to the segmental structure

The authors describe a non-Hodgkin malignant large-cell B lymphoma with ample lymphocytes in a female patient with foci in the left breast and right orbit, with suspect skin foci and enlarged nodes in the mediastinum as revealed by computed tomography. In the differential diagnosis the authors reflected according to the course of the disease in addition to malignant lymphoma also on orbitocellulitis or a pseudotumour of the orbit. The remarkable feature is that the patient had already treatment on account of a multiple myeloma. The authors emphasize comprehensive treatment of the patient and t

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPMNs) are rare malignant neoplasms that simultaneously or successively occur in the same patient as 2 or more primary malignancies. Currently, an increasing number of cases are being reported. In general, MPMNs more commonly occur as 2 solid tumors or 2 hematological malignancies. Cases of MPMN that involve a solid tumor and a hematological malignancy are rare. Here, we report a case of synchronous colorectal cancer (CRC) and multiple myeloma (MM) with chest wall involvement. After reviewing the literature, we believe that there may be a distinct syndrome
