De novo formation of a large cavernoma associated with a congenital torcular dural arteriovenous fistula: case report.

The authors report a case of a developmentally normal child with a congenital complex torcular dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) who later, in his teenage years, developed several vermian cavernomas within a large cerebellar developmental venous anomaly (DVA). The patient had initially presented with an abnormally large head circumference but no neurological deficits. He underwent several partial embolization procedures in an attempt to decrease the blood supply of the fistula over the course of 8 years. Nine years following initial presentation, he presented with a fourth ventricular hemorrh

Upper thoracic intradural-extramedullary cavernous malformation presenting as subarachnoid hemorrhage without spinal dysfunction: a case report and review of the literature.

A 45-year-old man had subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) which was confirmed by lumbar puncture, since it was negative on head computed tomography. The result of neurological examination was normal. Following pan-cerebral angiography and cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) failed to find out the cause of bleeding. The whole spinal MRI revealed an intradural-extramedullary mass lesion at the upper thoracic level which was consistent with cavernous malformation after surgery. When patients presented with SAH of no spinal symptoms, the diagnosis of an intradural-extramedullary cavernous malformat

Magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of the fetal spinal canal contents.

Ultrasonography (US) remains the first method in the evaluation of fetal central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities but in case of the spinal canal and cord it is often insufficient since the bony structures may obscure these structures. Prenatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is therefore the final noninvasive tool for the assessment of these malformations allowing for correction of sonographic findings, revealing the full extent of complex lesions and choosing the candidates for in utero treatment. The authors present the most frequent anomalies of spinal canal and spinal cord in the conse

Effect of maternal asthma on the risk of specific congenital malformations: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of consensus in the literature about the effect of maternal asthma on the development of congenital malformations. OBJECTIVE: To further examine the association between maternal asthma and the risk of congenital malformations. METHODS: A cohort of 41,637 pregnancies from women with and without asthma who delivered between 1990 and 2002 was reconstructed by linking three Quebec (Canada) administrative databases. All cases of malformations were identified using either the medical services or the hospital databases. The main exposure was maternal asthma, defined by t

Prevalence of congenital malformations in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states of Nigeria from 1980-2003.

A retrospective study was conducted on the prevalence of congenital malformations in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states of Nigeria from 1980-2003. These states lie in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The aim of the study was to determine the percentage of occurrence of birth defects and provide reference data for this part of the country. Details of congenital malformations were compiled by reviewing the delivery register of the records departments of maternity sections of University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, St Luke's Hospital Anua and St Mary's Hospital Uruakpan. A total of 12

Varicella-zoster virus infections during pregnancy: hypothesis concerning the mechanisms of congenital malformations.

An analysis of the data on 52 infants whose mothers had contracted varicella during pregnancy revealed that 27 had congenital malformations ascribed to the maternal varicella infections, while another 25 developed herpes zoster in the early postnatal period. Most of the mothers whose infants had congenital malformations had contracted varicella within the first 20 weeks of gestation, whereas most of the mothers whose infants developed herpes zoster had varicella after 21 weeks of gestation. The clinical features of the various congenital malformations and dysfunctions after maternal varicella

[CHARGE association].

Posterior choanal atresia is a congenital malformation which can occur isolated or in combination to additional malformations. In CHARGE association the other anomalies are: coloboma, heart disease, retarded development/growth or central nervous system abnormalities, genital hypoplasia or hypogonadism and ear abnormalities or deafness. The authors present three cases of CHARGE association and they also review the clinical findings required for the diagnosis.

Fetal heart rate parameters of anencephalic fetuses according to gestational age.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate various fetal heart rate (FHR) parameters of anencephalic fetuses and to assess the effect of the fetal nervous system on FHR according to gestational age. STUDY DESIGN: The antepartum nonstress test was performed in 25 anencephalic fetuses. Each FHR parameter was analyzed using a computerized FHR analysis system for various gestational groups, and the results were compared with results from a normal control group (N = 25). RESULTS: The mean baseline FHR of anencephalic fetuses decreased with increasing gestational age, as in normal fetuses. FHR variability increased w

Congenital ventricular diverticulum in the brainstem. Report of four cases.

This report concerns rare ventricular malformations observed in four fetal brains. Multiple aqueductal diverticula were the only malformation of the central nervous system (CNS) in one case, unilateral diverticula of the 4th ventricle in a holoprosencephaly and a hydrocephaly, and a ventral accessory aqueduct in a fetus with trisomy 18. These findings are the pathologic progression of embryonal ventricular recesses which may be seen in normal brains.

[Multiple cerebral cavernomatosis in a 1-year-old child].

Cavernous malformations are vascular lesions of the central nervous system. They are very rare in childhood. We report the case of sporadic cavernous cerebral angioma in a 1-year-old girl without pathologic antecedents revealed by a partial seizure. With this case and a review of the literature, we show the clinical and therapeutic characteristics of cerebral cavernomatosis in childhood.

Delleman syndrome: report of a case with a mild phenotype.

Delleman syndrome is a rare disorder characterised by orbital cysts, micro/anophthalmia, malformations of the central nervous system, focal aplasia cutis, and multiple skin appendages (oculocerebrocutaneous syndrome). Although cutaneous findings provide the main clues for the diagnosis, the syndrome has received little attention in the dermatological literature. A new case of oculocerebrocutaneous syndrome with predominant and typical cutaneous involvement is reported.

Are there CAG repeat expansion-related disorders outside the central nervous system?

Expansions of poly-glutamine tracts in proteins that are expressed in the central nervous system cause neurodegenerative diseases. The altered proteins accumulate over long periods of time, forming nuclear inclusions, and lead to neuronal cell death. A similar mechanism could also be operant in non-dividing cells outside the central nervous system because nuclear inclusions are not limited to neurons. In addition, variations of the repeat length within the normal range may affect cellular function as it has been shown for the androgen receptor that is involved in neoplastic degeneration of sev

Fetal Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Malformations Associated with Heterotaxy.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly used as an investigation during fetal life, particularly for assessment of intracranial masses, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, myelomeningocele, and abdominal masses. As the number of scans increases, so is the variety of congenital malformations being recognized. It is axiomatic that interpretation of the findings is enhanced when attention is paid to the likely findings in the setting of known syndromes, this information then dictating the need for additional acquisition of images. One such syndrome is so-called "visceral heterotaxy", in whi

Multifocal cerebral venous malformations and associated developmental venous anomalies in a case of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome.

We report a sporadic case of probable BRBN (blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome) with multiple CNS (central nervous system) involvement. These features consisted of multiple VMs (venous malformations) and DVAs (developmental venous anomalies) in supratentorial brain, cerebellum, and diencephalon. Since its first description by Bean, there have been many cases of BRBN manifesting with gastrointestinal bleeding with or without associated hemorrhage. Cases with CNS involvement were rarely reported and many of the descriptions were confusing with different terminologies used to describe them such as c

The fetal head: borderlines.

After more than 20 years of using ultrasound to examine the fetal head, there are still areas of controversy. The size of the ventricular atrium or the anteroposterior measurement of the posterior fossa have been shown to be relatively stable throughout pregnancy. However, there are instances in which intracranial malformations occur with normal ventricular atrial measurements. Although there are more obvious posterior fossa defects such as Dandy-Walker malformation, there are other abnormalities such as Dandy-Walker variant that are difficult to detect. Another area of controversy surrounds d

Tc-99m red blood cell imaging in a patient with blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome.

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome, first discovered in 1860 by Gascoyen, is a rare syndrome characterized by multiple venous malformations (hemangiomas) of the skin and in the gastrointestinal tract. These hemangiomas may be found in the skin, GI tract, central nervous system, thyroid, parotid, eyes, oral cavity, musculoskeletal system, lungs, kidneys, liver, spleen, and bladder, and carry a significant potential for serious bleeding. We report a case of a 9-year-old patient who presented with bloody stools and was referred for localization of the bleeding site. A Tc-99m labeled red blood cell (
