Psychotherapy and inhibitory control: Insights from fMRI research.

AIM: Despite the widespread clinical use of psychotherapy, the neural mechanisms linking treatment to changes in inhibitory control networks supporting self-regulation remain unclear. This study addresses this gap by meta-analyzing neuroimaging research on how psychotherapy affects brain regions involved in inhibitory control. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review, selecting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies that examined inhibitory control tasks before and after psychotherapeutic interventions. Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed usi

Analyzing an organism's sensors using Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) models with bias, variance, and confusion matrices.

Biological organisms have sensors that communicate information about the environment. Analyzing how well these biological sensors function has usually been done with mutual information between the sensor signal and the environment, but that can be computationally intractable and summarize something quite complex with just a single number. We suggest that alternatively, one may profitably analyze these biosensors using bias and variance or confusion matrices, depending on the kind of environment. Stimulus-dependent Maximum Entropy models are used to develop estimators of the environmental state

Cannula Implantation Reduces the Severity of the Beta Amyloid Effect on Peroxidized Lipids and Glutathione Levels in the Brain of BALB/c Mice.

Sporadic Alzheimer's disease (sAD) is the most common of neurodegenerative disorders. The lack of effective therapy indicates that the mechanisms of sAD development remain poorly understood. To investigate this pathology in animals, intracerebroventricular injection of β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) using a Hamilton syringe, either during stereotactic surgery or through a pre-implanted cannula, is used. In this study, we analyzed the effect of chronic cannula implantation on the severity of Aβ effects at the behavioral, histological, and biochemical levels. The results showed that the local damage to

Modafinil Decreased Thalamic Activation in Auditory Emotional Processing: A Randomized Controlled Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

BACKGROUND: Modafinil improves wakefulness and attention, is approved in Japan for treatment of narcolepsy, and was reported to be effective for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. However, it was reported to induce emotional instability, including mania, depression, and suicidal ideation. Such side effects may be related to changes in cognitive behavior caused by the effects of modafinil on emotional recognition. However, the effects of modafinil on the neural basis of emotional processing have not been fully verified. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the eff

Study of Resting-State Functional Connectivity Networks Using EEG Electrodes Position As Seed.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the standard diagnosis method for a wide variety of diseases such as epilepsy, sleep disorders, encephalopathies, and coma, among others. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance (rs-fMRI) is currently a technique used in research in both healthy individuals as well as patients. EEG and fMRI are procedures used to obtain direct and indirect measurements of brain neural activity: EEG measures the electrical activity of the brain using electrodes placed on the scalp, and fMRI detects the changes in blood oxygenation that occur in response to neural activity. Multimodal Artificial Intelligence in Lung Cancer: From Data Integration to Precision Oncology.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death globally, despite significant advances in diagnosis and treatment. Single biomarker approaches used clinically, such as programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression levels, have limited capacity for predicting treatment response. Multimodal data analysis using artificial intelligence (AI) offers an innovative scope to integrate diverse data sources-including radiologic imaging, digital pathology, genomics, immunohistochemistry, and Cell Painting morphology-to improve clinical predictions. This review aims to examine multimodal AI ap

Identification and characterization of human KALRN mRNA and Kalirin protein isoforms.

Kalirin is a multidomain protein with important roles in neurite outgrowth, and synaptic spine formation and remodeling. Genetic and pathophysiological links with various neuropsychiatric disorders associated with synaptic dysfunction and cognitive impairment have sparked interest in its potential as a pharmacological target. Multiple Kalirin proteoforms are detected in the adult human brain, yet we know little about the diversity of the transcripts that encode them or their tissue profiles. Here, we characterized full-length KALRN transcripts expressed in the adult human frontal lobe and hipp

Brain activity differences between susceptible and non-susceptible populations under visually induced motion sickness based on sensor-space and source-space analyses.

The neural mechanisms underlying visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) in different susceptible populations are unclear, as it is not clear how brain activity changes in different susceptible populations during the vection section (VS). This study aimed to analyze the brain activity changes in different susceptible populations during VS. Twenty subjects were included in this study and divided into the VIMS-susceptible group (VIMSSG) and VIMS-resistant group (VIMSRG) based on a motion sickness questionnaire. 64-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) data from these subjects during VS were collect

Inverted papilloma and nasal polyp classification using a deep convolutional network integrated with an attention mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma (IP) is a common sinus neoplasm with a probability of malignant transformation. Nasal polyps (NP) are the most frequent masses in the sinus. The classification of IP and NP using computed tomography (CT) is highly significant for preoperative recognition, treatment, and clinical examination. Few visible differences exist between IP and NP in CT, making it a challenge for otolaryngologists to distinguish between them. This study intended to classify IP and NP using a neural network and analyze its ability to discriminate the differences. METHODS: IP and NP in CT

Immunohistochemical Analysis of Prurigo Nodularis in 209 Patients: Clinicopathological Analysis between Atopic and Non-Atopic Patients and between Treatment Response Groups.

BACKGROUND: Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a highly pruritic disease that significantly impairs patient quality of life. Although the mechanism that causes pruritus is not clear, one hypothesis argues that neural hyperplasia, mast cell, and Merkel cell neurite complexes may be associated with PN pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze whether special staining outcomes differed depending on the presence of atopic dermatitis (AD) and treatment response. METHODS: A total of 209 patients diagnosed with PN was analyzed retrospectively. Patients were divided into two groups

A Primer on Constructing Plasticity Phenotypes to Classify Experience-Dependent Development of the Visual Cortex.

Many neural mechanisms regulate experience-dependent plasticity in the visual cortex (V1), and new techniques for quantifying large numbers of proteins or genes are transforming how plasticity is studied into the era of big data. With those large data sets comes the challenge of extracting biologically meaningful results about visual plasticity from data-driven analytical methods designed for high-dimensional data. In other areas of neuroscience, high-information content methodologies are revealing more subtle aspects of neural development and individual variations that give rise to a richer p

Morphological Integration of the Orbital Region in a Human Ontogenetic Sample.

Most studies on craniofacial morphology have focused on adult individuals, but patterns of variation are the outcome of genetic and epigenetic variables that interact throughout ontogeny. Among cranial regions, the orbits exhibit morphological variation and occupy an intermediate position between neurocranial and facial structures. The main objective of this work was to analyze postnatal ontogenetic variation and covariation in the morphology of the orbital region in a cross-sectional series of humans from 0 to 31 years old. Landmarks and semilandmarks were digitized on the orbital rim, as wel
