Endocrine neuromyopathies.

The myopathies associated with endocrine disorders range in clinical presentation from the relatively nonspecific pattern of proximal muscle weakness of glucocorticoid excess states to specific presentations of contractions produced in tetany. All endocrine neuromyopathies emphasize the role of skeletal muscle in protein, carbohydrate, and electrolyte metabolism. Hormonal abnormalities tend to compromise muscle force generation by indirect effects on muscle function. The recognition and effective treatment of all these disorders require the identification of the underlying hormonal imbalances

Neurologic assessment of the orthopaedic patient.

This article is a concise review of the neurologic assessment process. The neurologic assessment is composed of six components: mental state, cranial nerve, sensory system, motor system, cerebellar function, and reflexes. Accurate assessment and documentation of the neurologic status exam is essential to prevent or correct further neurologic deterioration.

[Neurologic findings in mild mental retardation].

The author subjected to neurological examination all children from a special school for retarded children (39 children, 22 boys, 17 girls). All children had a positive neurological finding. Central hypotonic syndrome was revealed most frequently--31 children; static tremor of the upper extremities--11 children and static tremor of the lower extremities--8 children. Minor cerebellar symptomatology was found in 10 children, developmental dyspraxia-dysgnosia in 6 children. Sixteen children were related (brother and sister, two sisters and cousins, etc.)

[Neurologic complications of malaria infection].

Infections with malaria are increasing in Europe and Northern America and are also spreading in tropical endemic areas. A falciparum variety of malaria known as cerebral malaria is the most well-known neurological complication, caused by Plasmodium falciparum and characterised by a fulminant course with disturbances of consciousness and facultative seizures or focal neurological deficits. 50% of deaths caused by malaria are due to cerebral involvement. Pathologically a disseminated vasculomyelinopathic disorder is seen. Immunological changes, vascular-hypoxic disturbances and metabolic-toxic f

[An adult patient with Krabbe's disease--the first case reported in Japan].

A 31-year-old woman, a child of consanguineous parents, who had shown mental retardation and slowness in running ability since childhood, complained of progressive spastic gait for one and a half years prior to admission. On admission, neurological examination revealed severe spastic paraplegia, mental retardation, visual disturbance, cerebellar ataxia, disturbance of deep sensation, sphincter disturbance, pes cavus and pes equinovarus. Protein content in the cerebrospinal fluid was increased to 86.1 mg/dl. Markedly reduced activity of galactosylceramidase in the leukocytes and the cultured fi

Nervous system dysfunction in children with paraneoplastic syndromes.

Paraneoplastic syndromes are complexes of symptoms and signs that occur in association with cancer and that are unexplained by the known ana … of the difficulty in eliciting specific neurologic complaints from children and because a thorough neurologic examination is often not undertaken as a matter of routine.

[Fetal alcohol syndrome].

Ethanol teratogenicity manifests itself in the form of the foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). This syndrome is characterised by growth delay, impairment of the central nervous system, and various facial dysmorphisms. We report the case of a 19 month-old boy affected by FAS. In addition to the three common features of FAS, this patient disclosed organic (digestive and cardiac) malformations and cellular chemotaxis deficiency. We have reviewed the literature to provide an update on the clinical signs of FAS. The abnormalities provoked by foetal exposure to ethanol can be very varied, none of them be

[Comparison of the clinical manifestations of neurinoma of the 8th nerve with their size].

The results of otoneurological and clinical examination were compared with the operative findings in 100 patients with neurinomas of the acoustic nerve. A regularity was found in the frequency of development and the degree of manifestation of some otoneurological and clinical signs depending on the size of the tumor. In 88% of cases the idea of the size of the tumor gained from the results of otoneurological and clinical examination corresponded to the actual size of the new growth determined during the operation.

Alterations in movement: nursing assessment and implications.

Physical assessment for nursing purposes is necessarily different from that of medicine because the focus of nursing is to diagnose and treat human responses to disease rather than the disease itself. This article will consider nursing assessment, pathophysiology, implications for daily living, and nursing implications for selected functional aspects of movement, namely seeing, eating, expressing (facially), speaking, moving, and walking.

Scales of gravity in head injury.

From the head injury onward the victim loses control over his own existence and starts a long journey through the various fields of forces determining his destiny until he can reassume control. Scales of gravity applied at different points in time vary and sometimes contradict each other. The vital scale is an immediate emergency scale, determined by the need to save a life, observe and treat a coma, and detect early complications, and the criteria are those of intensive care, surgery, and neurosurgery. The neurological and neuropsychological scale established towards the end of the first hosp
