PURPOSE: To report the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for management of choroidal nevus associated with subfoveal fluid.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 15 patients with choroidal nevus and associated subfoveal fluid treated with PDT was performed. Standard-fluence PDT was used in all patients and response to treatment was assessed with optical coherence tomography.
RESULTS: Complete resolution of subfoveal fluid was achieved in 9 eyes (60%) and partial resolution in 4 eyes (27%); 1 eye (7%) experienced worsening subfoveal fluid, and 1 eye (7%) was stable after PDT. After PD…

Cutaneous horns, which rarely occur in children, can overlie a large array of pathologic lesions that range from benign to malignant. When a cutaneous horn is encountered, it is not the horn itself that is of relevance, it is the nature of the underlying disease that dictates overall prognosis and management. In this report we present a case of a cutaneous horn arising within a linear verrucous epidermal nevus and briefly review cutaneous horns, with an emphasis on their clinical implications and differential diagnosis.

Several terms are widely used to define cutaneous lesions affecting the epidermis in association with extracutaneous lesions. Recently, based on the wide spectrum of cutaneous epidermal lesions, the various underlying molecular mechanisms and patterns of associated features have led to improved definitions of these disorders. Nevus sebaceous syndrome has been placed under the umbrella term of epidermal nevus syndrome, in which the nevus sebaceous, a congenital hamartomatous lesion of the epidermis, is associated with anomalies involving the brain, eyes, and bones. Nevus sebaceous and neurologi…

Melanocytic nevi are the most common benign proliferations of melanin-producing cells in Caucasians; up to 30 lesions can be seen in an adult individual. Lesional cells are usually superficially located in the epidermis-superficial dermis. Blue nevi are less common. They represent benign proliferations of fusiform dermal melanocytes in the submucosa or deep dermis. These cells contain abundant melanin granules. The blue color is due to the deep location of the lesional cells and the Tyndall effect. In the oral cavity, both melanocytic and blue nevi are rare; the hard palate being the site of p

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of inherited rare diseases characterized by fragility and blistering of the skin and mucous membranes. An EB nevus (EBN) is a very rare acquired nevus that occurs only in patients with EB. An EBN usually arises in an area of previous blistering, and frequently has an atypical appearance that mimics malignant melanoma. We describe an older man with an EBN on the sole. Physical examination revealed irregularly pigmented band-like black macules on his right sole, suggestive of malignant melanoma. Dermoscopic examination showed a parallel furrow pattern with a…

We report a case of ulcerated atypical Spitz nevi that demonstrated a yellow to light orange background under dermoscopy, which can be seen in juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) and is referred to as the "setting sun" appearance. This yellow to orange appearance was due to serous crusting and not histiocytic infiltration, which is seen in JXG. This case highlights overlapping dermatoscopic features between the two skin lesions and polymorphous vascular structures, which are unique to atypical Spitz nevi.

We report the case of an 8-year-old white girl with albinism and a flat pigmented choroidal lesion in the left eye measuring 0.5 mm in diameter. There was no subretinal fluid, lipofuscin, or drusen. The patient later displayed 10 lightly-pigmented cutaneous nevi on her upper chest, left arm, and right leg at 8 months' follow-up. The choroidal nevus showed minimal change over 2 years.

Nevus sebaceus (NS) is a common congenital cutaneous hamartoma that typically presents on the scalp and face at birth or in early childhood. Occasionally NS can be associated with the Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims syndrome, which presents with concomitant severe neurologic, skeletal, cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and genitourologic disorders. In a previous study, maternal transmission of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and infection of ectodermal stem cells by HPV was postulated to result in the development of NS. In this study we aimed to determine the incidence of HPV infection in pediatric N…

AIM: To report rare findings of oral and periodontal manifestations in a patient with Epidermal nevus syndrome (ENS).
BACKGROUND: The ENS describes the rare association of an epidermal nevus with abnormalities of central nervous system, ocular and skeletal abnormalities. Reports of oral involvement have been few. Also, most of the intraoral lesions have been reported in patients with nevi that do not fulfill the criteria for the diagnosis of ENS.
CASE DESCRIPTION: This report describes a case of ENS that, in addition to cutaneous manifestations showed skeletal involvement and intraoral manife…

BACKGROUND: RCM (reflectance confocal microscopy) is a noninvasive, high-resolution technology that has been proven to improve the diagnostic accuracy over clinical examination in several skin diseases.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to describe the morphologic features of halo nevi (HN) observed with RCM and correlate them with their dermoscopic characteristics.
METHOD: Nine patients with the clinical diagnosis of HN were assessed with RCM. A second assessment was performed up to 12 months later. Dermoscopic global patterns were obtained and correlated with the RCM findings.

Spitz tumor (nevus) is a rare, melanocytic lesion that primarily affects children and adolescents. The lesion may share many clinical and histological similarities with malignant melanoma and careful microscopic examination is required to render the proper diagnosis. Complete excision with close follow-up is considered the appropriate treatment. Despite the common presentation of Spitz nevi on the facial skin, lip involvement has only rarely been described in the English language literature. In the present study, a case of Spitz tumor located on the vermilion border of the upper lip in a 16-ye…

BACKGROUND: Kissing nevus is a congenital nevus in adjacent parts of the eyelids. Malignant transformation of kissing or divided nevi of the eyelids is rarely described.
OBJECTIVE: To report a very rare case of malignant transformation of kissing nevus with ocular and extraocular spread.
CASE: A 57- year- old man with 6/6 visual acuity in both eyes presented with a kissing nevus present since birth in right upper and lower eyelids which had a slow growth phase. The upper lid in the area of the nevus was thickened with a 20x12x15 mm black pigmented crusted hemorrhagic nodular lesions. The low…

Dysplastic nevus is an acquired or hereditary nevus that clinically seems atypical and pathohistologically dysplastic. The term of dysplastic nevus has changed through history and even until now the dermatologists and pathologists have not found the same conclusion for name and definition of dysplastic nevus. Epidemiology of dysplastic nevus is different depending on geographic lattitude, being three times higher in Australia than in Great Britain. Genetic factors play a role in etiology of dysplastic nevus but are still not well defined. UV radiation is indisputable main etiological factor in…
