Ear nose throat manifestations in hypoidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

The ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) are a large and complex group of inherited disorders. In various combinations, they all share anomalies in e … frequent; they differentiate each other for the presence or absence of sweat glands. We report Ear Nose Throat manifestations of ED, linked to the reduction of mucous glands in the nasal fossae with reduced ciliar function, and decrease salivary glands function. Often patients report an increased rate of infections of the upper respiratory tract and o …

Allergic rhinitis: more than just a stuffy nose.

UNLABELLED: Allergic rhinitis is more than just sneezing and an itchy nose. Complications of this disease are numerous and can have a significant impact, both mentally and physically. That is why it is important not only to detect, investigate and treat allergic rhinitis but also to actively identify potential complications. Mental functions such as learning, sleep and activity levels can deteriorate, and the eustachian tubes, sinuses and airway functions can be affected. Otitis, sinusitis and asthma are overrepresented among individuals who suffer from allergic rhinitis. This article highligh…

Surgical correction of wry nose in four horses.

OBJECTIVE: To describe surgical techniques used for correction of congenital nasal deviation (wry nose) in horses (wry nose) and to report outcome. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Horses (n=4), 5-17 months old with wry nose. METHODS: Nasal deviation was corrected by transecting the premaxillae/maxillae and nasal bones at their site of maximum curvature and realigning and stabilizing the bones in a more normal alignment using internal fixation. The nasal septum was removed during the same anesthetic period. RESULTS: For each horse, physical appearance was improved and respirator…

Corrective osteotomy technique for a posttraumatic deviated nose.

Posttraumatic nasal deformities may not be adequately corrected by conventional osteotomy techniques when the configuration of the nasal bone has been changed as a result of malunion. The purpose of this study is to present an osteotomy technique, including refracture along malunion sites and anatomic reduction of a malformed nasal bone, for the correction of a posttraumatic deviated nose. From March 2003 to May 2004, 27 patients, who underwent corrective rhinoplasty for the correction of bony pyramid deviation, were included in this study. Postoperative results were evaluated regarding nasal …

Saddle nose deformity: A new classification and treatment.

Treatment of saddle noses challenges the surgeon to provide esthetic form and functional improvement despite the presence of a limited amount of tissue to work with. The previous emphasis on alloplastic materials was a testament not only to the poor results obtained with autogenous tissues but also the unwarranted promise of the "miracles of modern chemistry." Only in the last 5 years have multiple surgeons begun to achieve outstanding results using autogenous tissues. It is hoped that this article will encourage younger surgeons to build on this foundation and provide hope to a group of patie…

Intracranial EEG study of seizure-associated nose wiping.

The authors studied the relation between seizure-associated nose wiping (NW) and intracerebral EEG data in 32 patients. NW was more frequent in mesial temporal lobe seizures (TLSs; 65%) than in other TLSs (36%; p < 0.05) and in frontal lobe seizures (3%; p < 0.0001). It was associated with the presence of an amygdala discharge at seizure onset (p < 0.05) and with the recording of an ictal low-voltage fast activity within that structure (p < 0.05), supporting the role of an amygdala dysfunction in the pathophysiology of NW.

Three-step reconstruction of complex saddle nose deformities.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a reproducible surgical technique for augmentation rhinoplasty of complex saddle nose deformities, which are characterized by substantial loss of nasal structural support and result in multiple nasal abnormalities. DESIGN: Case series and surgical outcome study. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: A total of 43 patients (32 female and 11 male; mean +/- SD age, 36 +/- 12 years) with complex saddle nose deformities and extensive loss of nasal volume, shape, and support who underwent reconstructive surgery between 1997 and 1999. INTERVENTION: A standardized 3-s…

Ear-nose-throat manifestations of autoimmune rheumatic diseases.

Ear-nose-throat (ENT) manifestations of connective tissue disorders represent a diagnostic challenge for clinicians as they often constitute the initial sign of an otherwise asymptomatic autoimmune disease. Moreover, in patients with known autoimmune rheumatic diseases, ENT manifestations can be overlooked. Hearing disturbances may be seen in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, Wegener's granulomatosis, relapsing polychondritis, polyarteritis nodosa, Cogan's syndrome, Sjögren's syndrome, and less frequently in Churg-Strauss syndrome and Adamantiades-Behçet's disease. Nose and paranasal…

Nose wiping: an unrecognized automatism in absence seizures.

Nose wiping is a well-known postictal automatism in complex partial seizures, considered very important for lateralization. We report a 24-year-old woman selected from 32 patients with video-EEG investigations of absence seizures. The patient, with normal examination and imaging findings, had typical absence seizures from the age of 5 years, which were controlled with either ethosuximide or valproate and worsened by carbamazepine. In two of her recorded typical absence seizures associated with generalized 3 Hz symmetric spike-wave discharges, she wiped her nose as an automatism in the ictal an…

Deviated nose: technical proposition for prevention of recurrences.

After considering previously published studies and accordant with their observations during operations, the authors propose a surgical technique for the treatment of the deviated nose. Subpericondrial liberation of the upper lateral cartilages on the concave surface, with regard to the deviation, helps to prevent recurrences. After illustration of the surgical technique, some representative clinical cases are presented.

The traumatic saddle nose deformity: etiology and treatment.

The saddle nose resembles a saddle, i.e., with a concave, often flattened dorsum and an apparent cephalic rotation of the nasal tip. The concavity may be present in the osseous or cartilaginous dorsum, or both. The saddle nose deformity can be divided into congenital, postinfection, postsurgical, and traumatic types. Congenital saddle nose deformity is rare, often accompanying midfacial deficiency malformation syndromes. The advent of antimicrobial therapy has helped restrict the incidence of syphilitic or leprotic saddle nose to the nonindustrialized nations. Postsurgical saddle nose deformit…

[Treatment of complex nose deformities by external approach].

The authors present thirty patients with complex nasal deformities operated on by external approach. The incision was on the nasal columella. They used bone and cartilage grafts for the correction of the deformities. The external transcolumellar incision provided a good visualization of nasal structures and the columella scar was not a significant problem.

Secondary correction of bilateral cleft lip nose deformity.

For correction of the bilateral cleft lip nasal deformity, a modified bilateral reverse U incision is used in combination with a short, forked flap; by using this combination, satisfactory lengthening of the columella, preserving the natural pout of the lip, can be obtained. We have applied this method to 12 cases undergoing secondary repair of bilateral cleft lip in the past 3 years, and the results of this treatment, along with representative photographs of some of our patients, are presented herein.

[Traumatic lesions of the nose-ethmoid-forehead region].

The treatment of this kind of lesion further remains difficult and requires work of several specialists: Neurosurgeon, Ophthalmologist, and ENT-surgeon. As for our opinion the reconstruction of anatomy and normal function of the frontal sinus is unequivocal, and performing it in the majority of cases renders in outstanding results.
