A significant number of adult oncology patients require at least one peripheral intravenous catheter to fulfill their therapeutic plan. Recent evidence indicates that catheter failure rates are high in this cohort, impacting care outcomes and patient experience during cancer treatment. This reality represents a challenge to nurses worldwide since in most international settings they are responsible for delivering quality care during the insertion and maintenance of such devices. This study aims to explore current nursing practices regarding the insertion, maintenance, and surveillance of periph

There are marked disparities in supply and demand for specialty-trained health care providers in low-income and middle-income countries (LMIC). Nurses are at the forefront in volunteering to provide humanitarian health support in local, national, and international disasters. Responding to the call to provide expert medical and surgical education and care in LMIC aligns with the passion and purpose of nursing. This article shares a real-world experience of perioperative nurses in partnership with the surgical team to provide cleft lip/palate repair for children in LMIC. It is all in the smile l

OBJECTIVE: Failure to adequately decontaminate patient equipment will increase the risk of transmission of infection between patients and may contribute to the development of hospital-acquired infections. In effect, full obedience towards the acceptable decontamination process by healthcare workers is required. The aim of this study was to assess decontamination practice and associated factors among nurses in hospitals of the southeast, Ethiopia.
RESULTS: A total of 273 nurses participated in the study with a response rate of 98.9%. Of these respondents, the acceptable decontamination practic

BACKGROUND: The extant literature about party drug use among gay men primarily produces a list of negative health sequelae that correlate with using these substances. Missing from the current research are explorations about why people consume party drugs. In other words, researchers have not systematically collected people's narratives about "what they get out of" party drugs.
METHODS: Using Deleuze's and Bataille's work, exploratory semistructured interviews were undertaken with gay men who reported attending circuit parties, using party drugs, and engaging in condomless sex.
RESULTS: Seven

Patients with multiple myeloma (MM) are typically of an advanced age and may have significant co-existing medical conditions. They have often had multiple lines of therapy and as such experience disease-related effects alongside associated treatment toxicities. Daratumumab is a monoclonal antibody approved for the treatment of MM in the relapsed/refractory setting. Clinical studies found that daratumumab showed good tolerability as a monotherapy and in combination with current standard therapies. However, the administration of daratumumab does require specific management considerations. It is

Intra-abdominal hypertension can be classified as either primary or secondary. Primary intra-abdominal hypertension is often associated through trauma or diseases of the abdominopelvic region such as pancreatitis or abdominal surgery, while secondary intra-abdominal hypertension is the result of extra-abdominal causes such as sepsis or burns. The critically ill patient offers some challenges in monitoring in particular secondary intra-abdominal hypertension because of the effects of fluid resuscitation, the use of inotropes and positive pressure ventilation. Recent work suggests that intensive

Individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI) who are incarcerated pose major treatment challenges for both correctional personnel and healthcare providers, yet deserve the same high standards of care as those in traditional mental health facilities. The literature references these challenges as types of mental health treatment disparities, and calls for improvement measures from clinicians, researchers, policy-makers, and advocates. From the standpoint of psychiatric-mental health (PMH) nursing, this paper explores, examines, and offers some contemporary clinical and practice perspectives f

Graduate nurse transition from college to professional practice is an important matter in a nurse's professional life. In many cases, this period is characterized by unhealthy physical and mental reactions, loss of interest in one's profession, and unacceptable caregiving. By examining the phenomenon from the point of view of experienced nurses, we can recognize the major factors in a successful transition from college life to professional life. This is a qualitative study and was conducted based on conventional qualitative content analysis method; 14 nurses were selected through purposive sam

BACKGROUND: Up to 85% of hospital in-patients will require some form of vascular access device to deliver essential fluids, drug therapy, nutrition and blood products, or facilitate sampling. The failure rate of these devices is unacceptably high, with 20-69% of peripheral intravenous catheters and 15-66% of central venous catheters failing due to occlusion, depending on the device, setting and population. A range of strategies have been developed to maintain device patency, including intermittent flushing. However, there is limited evidence informing flushing practice and little is known abou

Minors have difficulty adhering to the strict management regimen required whilst on renal dialysis for chronic renal failure. This leads to ethical tensions as healthcare professionals (HCPs) and parents try, in the minor's best interests, to ensure s/he adheres. All 11 dialysis nurses working in a large, regional paediatric dialysis unit were interviewed about their perceptions and management of non-adherence and the ethical issues this raised for them. Participants reported negative attitudes to non-adherence alongside sympathy and feelings of frustration. They discussed the competing respon

AIMS: This paper presents a discussion on the potential of the theories of practice and habitus as espoused by the sociologist Bourdieu.
BACKGROUND: The interaction between nurses and patients is a constitutive element in the nursing process and a central aspect in the theories developed by Paterson and Zderad, and Orlando. Bourdieu's theory of habitus and practices assists in understanding and explaining differentiated results concerning nurse-patient interaction.
DATA SOURCES: In a study on interactions with paraplegic patients, distinguished levels of interactions, which show considerable

This article presents an overview of an online education offering to improve standards of practice for nurses intervening with tobacco-dependent mentally ill populations. Designed as a pilot study and guided by the theory of reasoned action framework, the pretest-posttest educational program was conducted to examine attitudes and beliefs, knowledge, and intentions to integrate tobacco cessation interventions into practice. Although positive attitudes and beliefs were demonstrated, knowledge gaps continued to exist after the online program. Strengths and challenges of the online education offer

AIMS: This study explored community health nurses' viewpoints about a Canadian online community of practice to support their practice with homeless or under-housed populations.
BACKGROUND: Community health nurses who specifically work with homeless and marginally housed populations often report feelings of isolation and stress in managing complex problems in resource constraints. To strengthen intra-professional ties and enhance information access, an online community of practice was designed, implemented and evaluated by and for them.
METHODS: Q-methodology was used. Sixty-six statements ab

In the first part of this 2-part continuing education series, sources of medication errors were discussed. A predominant source of errors was the prescribing of potentially inappropriate medications for older adults. In this second part, drug classifications and drugs posing problems for older adults and cautions for advanced practice acute care and critical care nurses in their medication therapy management are highlighted. Cautions are advanced for anticholinergics, antihypertensives, analgesics, and psychotropics because of the severity of adverse reactions, including anticholinergic sympto

Less well-known among the psychiatric disorders, dissociation is one of the most common underlying symptoms of individuals seeking mental health care (Maldonado, 2001). Closely associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociation characteristics may include inconsistent consciousness, autobiographical forgetfulness, difficulties in self-regulation, regressions, alternate identities, disorganization in the development of a cohesive sense of self, depersonalization, and derealization (Trickett, Noll, Reiffman & Putnam, 2001). The major constructs and dimensions of the dissociative sympto
