Evaluation of sodium butyrate and nutrient concentration for broiler chickens.

The relation between nutrition and intestinal health is a subject with an increasing interest in research, as nutritionists need knowledge about how formulation affects different parameters in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). That is why 4 trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of nutrient concentration and a feed additive (sodium butyrate protected with sodium salts of palm fatty acid distillates (PSB, Gustor N'RGY produced by Norel S.A., Spain, dosed at 1 kg/t), on performance, diet digestibility, intestinal morphology, volatile fatty acid concentration (VFA) in the GIT and intestinal

Anatomic characterization of the tibial and fibular nutrient arteries in humans.

The location of nutrient foramina has been extensively studied in long bones; however, accurate information on the origin and extra-osseous course of the nutrient artery remains clearly defined in some long bones, although it is crucial to protect the nutrient arteries during operative procedures. In this study, we elucidated the origin and extra-osseous course of tibial and fibular nutrient arteries based on the 54 cadaveric legs. The tibial nutrient artery typically arose from the posterior tibial artery. Some of the tibial nutrient arteries arose from the anterior tibial, popliteal, and fib

Role of antioxidants and a nutrient rich diet in Alzheimer's disease.

The joint attack on the body by metabolic acidosis and oxidative stress suggests that treatment in degenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), may require a normalizing of extracellular and intracellular pH with simultaneous supplementation of an antioxidant combination cocktail at a sufficiently high dose. Evidence is also accumulating that combinations of antioxidants may be more effective, taking advantage of synergistic effects of appropriate antioxidants as well as a nutrient-rich diet to prevent and reverse AD. This review focuses on nutritional, nutraceutical and antioxid

On the roles of the Duodenum and the Vagus nerve in learned nutrient preferences.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In most species, including humans, food preference is primarily controlled by nutrient value. However, the gut-brain pat … nterestingly, sodium preferences were abrogated by DJB but not by SDV. CONCLUSIONS: Different macronutrients make use of distinct gut-brain pathways to influence food preferences, thereby mirroring nutrient-specific processes of food digestion. Specifically, whereas both vagal innervation and duodenal sensing appear critical for generating responses to fat …

Postnatal Nutrient Repartitioning due to Adaptive Developmental Programming.

Fetal stress induces developmental adaptations that result in intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and low birthweight. These adaptations reappropriate nutrients to the most essential tissues, which benefits fetal survival. The same adaptations are detrimental to growth efficiency and carcass value in livestock, however, because muscle is disproportionally targeted. IUGR adipocytes, liver tissues, and pancreatic β-cells also exhibit functional adaptations. Identifying mechanisms underlying adaptive changes is fundamental to improving outcomes and value in low birthweight livestock. The artic…

A gut-brain neural circuit for nutrient sensory transduction.

The brain is thought to sense gut stimuli only via the passive release of hormones. This is because no connection has been described between the vagus and the putative gut epithelial sensor cell-the enteroendocrine cell. However, these electrically excitable cells contain several features of epithelial transducers. Using a mouse model, we found that enteroendocrine cells synapse with vagal neurons to transduce gut luminal signals in milliseconds by using glutamate as a neurotransmitter. These synaptically connected enteroendocrine cells are referred to henceforth as neuropod cells. The neuroep

Insulin resistance in cavefish as an adaptation to a nutrient-limited environment.

Periodic food shortages are a major challenge faced by organisms in natural habitats. Cave-dwelling animals must withstand long periods of nutrient deprivation, as-in the absence of photosynthesis-caves depend on external energy sources such as seasonal floods. Here we show that cave-adapted populations of the Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, have dysregulated blood glucose homeostasis and are insulin-resistant compared to river-adapted populations. We found that multiple cave populations carry a mutation in the insulin receptor that leads to decreased insulin binding in vitro and contribute

Predicting scale formation during electrodialytic nutrient recovery.

Electro-concentration of nutrients from waste streams is a promising technology to enable resource recovery, but has several operational concerns. One key concern is the formation of inorganic scale on the concentrate side of cation exchange membranes when recovering nutrients from wastewaters containing calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and carbonate, commonly present in anaerobic digester rejection water. Electrodialytic nutrient recovery was trialed on anaerobic digester rejection water in a laboratory scale electro-concentration unit without treatment (A), following struvite recovery (B), an…

[An alternative biphasic nutrient medium for the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis].

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by the Leishmania spp. parasites, is a disease characterized by nodulo-ulcerative lesions in the skin. CL is transmitted to humans by infected sandflies during blood sucking, and is endemic in about 98 countries over the world. The demonstration of amastigotes via microscopic examination, and the growth of promastigotes in NNN (Novy-MacNeal-Nicolle) medium are gold standard methods for laboratory diagnosis. The aim of this study was to compare the biphasic NNN medium that is frequently used in routine laboratories with the biphasic nutrient medium that can b

Coupling between Nutrient Availability and Thyroid Hormone Activation.

The activity of the thyroid gland is stimulated by food availability via leptin-induced thyrotropin-releasing hormone/thyroid-stimulating hormone expression. Here we show that food availability also stimulates thyroid hormone activation by accelerating the conversion of thyroxine to triiodothyronine via type 2 deiodinase in mouse skeletal muscle and in a cell model transitioning from 0.1 to 10% FBS. The underlying mechanism is transcriptional derepression of DIO2 through the mTORC2 pathway as defined in rictor knockdown cells. In cells kept in 0.1% FBS, there is DIO2 inhibition via FOXO1 bindi

Nutrient regulation of glucagon secretion: involvement in metabolism and diabetes.

Glucose homeostasis is precisely regulated by glucagon and insulin, which are released by pancreatic α- and β-cells, respectively. While β-cells have been the focus of intense research, less is known about α-cell function and the actions of glucagon. In recent years, the study of this endocrine cell type has experienced a renewed drive. The present review contains a summary of established concepts as well as new information about the regulation of α-cells by glucose, amino acids, fatty acids and other nutrients, focusing especially on glucagon release, glucagon synthesis and α-cell survival. Nutrient salvaging and metabolism by the intracellular pathogen Legionella pneumophila.

The Gram-negative bacterium Legionella pneumophila is ubiquitous in freshwater environments as a free-swimming organism, resident of biofilms, or parasite of protozoa. If the bacterium is aerosolized and inhaled by a susceptible human host, it can infect alveolar macrophages and cause a severe pneumonia known as Legionnaires' disease. A sophisticated cell differentiation program equips L. pneumophila to persist in both extracellular and intracellular niches. During its life cycle, L. pneumophila alternates between at least two distinct forms: a transmissive form equipped to infect host cells a

Nutrient solubilization and its availability following anaerobic digestion.

This study aims to investigate solubilization of elements (P, N, K, Ca and Mg) during anaerobic digestion (AD) of solid agriculture waste. I … Complete solubilization of P, Ca and Mg occurred below a threshold of pH 5.5. This indicates these nutrients were released during digestion, and then either bound to form inorganic compounds or adsorbed on solid surfaces in the digestate. These effects reduce the feasibility of post-digestion recovery of the nutrients via struvite crystallization. Strategi …

Phototrophic bacteria for nutrient recovery from domestic wastewater.

The organics and nutrients in industrial and domestic wastewater are increasingly being regarded as a valuable resource for energy and nutrient recovery. Emerging concepts to redesign wastewater treatment as resource recovery systems include the use of different bacteria and algae to partition carbon and nutrients to the particulate phase through assimilation or bio-accumulation. This study evaluates the use of purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) (also known as purple non-sulphur bacteria or PNSB) for such a biological concentration process through a series of batch tests. The key objectives ar…

Loss of TSC2 confers resistance to ceramide and nutrient deprivation.

Nutrient stress that produces quiescence and catabolism in normal cells is lethal to cancer cells, because oncogenic mutations constitutively drive anabolism. One driver of biosynthesis in cancer cells is the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling complex. Activating mTORC1 by deleting its negative regulator tuberous sclerosis complex 2 (TSC2) leads to hypersensitivity to glucose deprivation. We have previously shown that ceramide kills cells in part by triggering nutrient transporter loss and restricting access to extracellular amino acids and glucose, suggesting that TSC2

The anorectic effect of GLP-1 in rats is nutrient dependent.

GLP-1-induced insulin secretion from the β-cell is dependent upon glucose availability. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether CNS GLP-1 signaling is also glucose-dependent. We found that fasting blunted the ability of 3(rd) cerebroventricularly (i3vt)-administered GLP-1 to reduce food intake. However, fasted animals maintained the anorexic response to melanotan II, a melanocortin receptor agonist, indicating a specific effect of fasting on GLP-1 action. We also found that i3vt administration of leptin, which is also decreased with fasting, was not able to potentiate GLP-1 a
