The North Country on the Job Network: a unique role for occupational health nurses in a community coalition.

1. Through a community based program, nurses were hired by a rural medical center to facilitate care for injured workers in the community. This placed the nurses outside the industrial and insurance arenas. 2. Rapid access to care and expedited return to work were made possible largely through improved communication, facilitated by the nurse case coordinators, among all involved parties (i.e., workers, employers, health care providers, insurance carriers). 3. The program provides access to occupational health nurses, or case managers, to a large number of rural workers--many of whom work for s…

[Sentinel events in occupational medicine: the example of Local Health Unit No. 1 of the Tuscany region].

In order to apply the "sentinel health event" methodology we reviewed the certificates of 4541 deaths occurred in the period 1/01/83-31/12/88 in the USL 1 (Lunigiana) in the Tuscany Region. The histories of 6 work accidents, 6 cases of pleural mesothelioma, and 2 cases of sinunasal cancers have been collected by means of personal interviews and investigation at various workplaces. It should be noted that a case of sinunasal cancer was discovered in a farmer who used lead arsenate as an insecticidal. Furthermore the wife of a shipyard worker died of pleural mesothelioma. The death of a shipyard

Inhalation exposure and health effects of copper particles in the context of occupational exposure limit derivation.

Copper is a naturally occurring element found in the Earth's crust, soil, water, and air. However, human activities such as smelting, refining, and producing copper-containing products pose a likelihood of occupational inhalation exposure. While copper is an essential element vital to human health, it is also a redox-active metal; thus, exposure beyond tolerable ranges could elicit a toxicological response. Previous occupational exposure limits (OELs) for copper and its compounds have been proposed, but most are based on limited datasets. More recent data available on the health effects of cop

Retrospective evaluation of measures in the field of occupational health services during the COVID-19 epidemic.

OBJECTIVES: In the Czech Republic, employers and employees are bound by legal regulations that ensure occupational health and safety. These regulations are based on international conventions of the International Labour Organization and directives of the European Parliament and Council and have long been incorporated into Czech legislation. During the COVID-19 epidemic, emergency and crisis measures led to a limitation of occupational health examinations (OHEs) in the Czech Republic, which represented a significant disruption of the occupational health and safety system. The aim of the study wa…

METHODS: We extracted routinely collected absenteeism data for the years 2019-2022 from a database maintained by two large, nationally operating occupational health services (n = 443,740). All diagnoses and included sickness cases were recorded > 6 weeks of absenteeism. Descriptive statistics, including median values (IQR) and percentages, were calculated and compared using the Mann-Whitney U test …

Occupational Exposure to Solar Radiation and the Eye: A Call to Implement Health Surveillance of Outdoor Workers.

Globally, hundreds of millions of outdoor workers are exposed to solar radiation (SR) for the majority of their working life. Such occupational exposure is known to induce various adverse health effects to the eyes, mainly related to its ultraviolet (UV) component. The present work is a call-to-action aimed at raising the awareness on the need of health surveillance for the prevention of the chronic ocular diseases in outdoor workers. Photo-chemical chronic damage can induce pterygium at the outer layer of the eye and cataract in the lens. Considering carcinogenic effects, rare squamous-cells

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in the Environment: Occupational and Exposure Events, Effects on Human Health and Fertility.

In the last decade or so, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) garnered renewed attention in the scientific community due to new evidence pointing at their continued presence in the environment and workplaces and the potential human risks related to their presence. PCBs move from the environment to humans through different routes; the dominant pathway is the ingestion of contaminated foods (fish, seafood and dairy products), followed by inhalation (both indoor and outdoor air), and, to a lesser extent, dust ingestion and dermal contact. Numerous studies reported the environmental and occupational

Obesity among Health-Care Workers: Which Occupations Are at Higher Risk of Being Obese?

Obesity among health-care workers (HCWs) is an important issue as it can affect both their health condition and their professional capability. Although adult obesity is attributable to occupational factors, few reports are available on Malaysian health-care workers' obesity and whether different health-care job categories are related to workers' obesity. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of obesity among HCWs and the association between various HCW job categories and obesity. A cross-sectional study was conducted by analyzing secondary data from the 2019 annual cardiovascular health

A One Health approach to assessing occupational exposure to antimicrobial resistance in Thailand: The FarmResist project.

This Southeast Asia-Europe research project will use a One Health approach to identify the major parameters responsible for the presence of animal-associated antimicrobial resistant bacteria in animal production facilities in Thailand and the risk of their transmission from animals to humans. We will focus on traditional, small, extensive pig and poultry farms where information on antibiotic use is scarce and animals live in close contact with humans. This cross-sectional study will be based on the epidemiological analysis of the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) present in fecal samples from ani

The aim of this study was to investigate a potted plant-soil system ability in formaldehyde removal from a poor ventilated indoor air to promote dwellers health. METHODS: For this purpose, we used one of the common interior plants from the fern species (Nephrolepis obliterata), inside a Plexiglas chamber under controlled environment. Entire plant removal efficiency and potted soil/roots contribution were determined by continuously intro
