Solubility of hydrocarbon oils in alcohols (≤C6) and synthesis of difusel carbonate for degreasing.

The empirical solubility of hydrocarbon fluids, polyalphaolefin (PAO) and mineral oil, in thirteen small molecular weight alcohols (C1-C6) was determined. Butanols, pentanols, and 1-hexanol could dissolve up to PAO-10 and mineral oil. tert-Pentanol and 1-hexanol could also dissolve high-viscosity PAO-150. The dialkyl carbonate of fusel oil (DFC) was synthesized from dimethyl carbonate in 69% yield. DFC had excellent non-polar solubility and could dissolve PAO-150 and several common industrial lubricants. The flash point of DFC was 93 °C, more than twice that of isoamyl alcohol. DFC had net hea

Essential Oils of Five Baccharis Species: Investigations on the Chemical Composition and Biological Activities.

This paper provides a comparative account of the essential oil chemical composition and biological activities of five Brazilian species of Baccharis (Asteraceae), namely B. microdonta, B. pauciflosculosa, B. punctulata, B. reticularioides, and B. sphenophylla. The chemical compositions of three species (B. pauciflosculosa, B. reticularioides, and B. sphenophylla) are reported for the first time. Analyses by GC/MS showed notable differences in the essential oil compositions of the five species. α-Pinene was observed in the highest concentration (24.50%) in B. reticularioides. Other major compou

Inhaled peppermint, rosemary and eucalyptus essential oils do not change spirometry in healthy individuals.

Essential oils of herbal origin are widely used in the treatment of diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract primarily due to their antibacterial and antiviral effects. Menthol, the major component of the essential oil of mint (Mentha) species, exhibits antispasmodic activity, which might result in improved lung function. In a randomized experiment, 106 healthy participants received nebulized peppermint, eucalyptus, or rosemary essential oil for 15 min or no treatment (control). None of the essential oils had an impact on the measured spirometric variables (forced vital capacity, peak…

Characterization of Nitrogen-Containing Polycyclic Aromatic Heterocycles in Crude Oils and Refined Petroleum Products.

A large amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their heterocyclic analogues (N, S, O) are released to the marine environment from natural oil seeps, oil spills, bilge discharges and input of land-based sources. Many of these compounds are toxic and have a deleterious effect on marine biota. Nitrogen-containing compounds in crude oils are typically present as cyclic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles (PANHs) and are generally classified into the two categories of nonbasic (N-PANHs) and basic compounds (B-PANHs). Chromatographic analyses of PANHs are easil…

Oxide-Free Actuation of Gallium Liquid Metal Alloys Enabled by Novel Acidified Siloxane Oils.

Electrowetting and electrocapillarity of liquid metals have a long history, and a recent explosion of renewed interest. Liquid metals have electromagnetic properties and surface tensions (>500 mN/m) that enable new forms of reconfigurable devices. However, the only nontoxic option, gallium alloys, suffer from immediate formation of a semirigid surface oxide. Although acids or electrochemical reduction can remove this oxide, these approaches surround the gallium alloy in a fluid that is also electrically conducting, diminishing electromagnetic effectiveness and precluding electrowetting actuati

Oral exposure to mineral oils: Is there an association with immune perturbation and autoimmunity?

Mineral oils is a generic term that describes a category of petroleum products, that may include lubricating base oils and highly refined base oils. Parenteral exposure of rodents to certain mineral oil hydrocarbons has been reported to induce immune perturbation associated with the development of autoimmune responses. Consumers are exposed to a variety of mineral oil hydrocarbons via food and food contaminants, and in particular via food packaging. It is relevant, therefore, to consider whether dietary exposure to mineral oils results in similar effects; and that is the purpose of this articl…

Amebicidal activity of the essential oils of Lippia spp. (Verbenaceae) against Acanthamoeba polyphaga trophozoites.

Amoebic keratitis and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis are caused by some strains of free-living amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba. In the case of keratitis, one of the greatest problems is the disease recurrence due to the resistance of parasites, especially the cystic forms, to the drugs that are currently used. Some essential oils of plants have been used as potential active agents against this protist. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the amebicidal activity of essential oils from plants of the genus Lippia against Acanthamoeba polyphaga trophozoites. To that end, 8 × 10(4) t…

Olfactory stimulatory with grapefruit and lavender oils change autonomic nerve activity and physiological function.

This review summarizes the effects of olfactory stimulation with grapefruit and lavender oils on autonomic nerve activity and physiological function. Olfactory stimulation with the scent of grapefruit oil (GFO) increases the activity of sympathetic nerves that innervate white and brown adipose tissues, the adrenal glands, and the kidneys, decreases the activity of the gastric vagal nerve in rats and mice. This results in an increase in lipolysis, thermogenesis, and blood pressure, and a decrease in food intake. Olfactory stimulation with the scent of lavender oil (LVO) elicits the opposite cha…

Acrylate ester-based monolithic columns for capillary electrochromatography separation of triacylglycerols in vegetable oils.

A simple and reliable method for the evaluation of triacylglycerols (TAGs) in vegetable oils by capillary electrochromatography (CEC) with UV-Vis detection, using octadecyl acrylate (ODA) ester-based monolithic columns, has been developed. The percentages of the porogenic solvents in the polymerization mixture, and the mobile phase composition, were optimized. The optimum monolith was obtained at the following ratios: 40:60% (wt/wt) monomers/porogens, 60:40% (wt/wt) ODA/1,3-butanediol diacrylate and 23:77% (wt/wt) 1,4-butanediol/1-propanol (14 wt% 1,4-butanediol in the polymerization mixture).…

Encapsulation of essential oils within a polymeric liposomal formulation for enhancement of antimicrobial efficacy.

Essential oils and their constituents are known to possess antimicrobial activity; however, their inherent volatility is a limiting factor. In order to exploit the antimicrobial efficacy of essential oils, encapsulation within polymeric liposomal systems was undertaken. The liposomes were subsequently polymer-coated in order to further enhance the stability of the formulations. Essential oils distilled from Artemisia afra, Eucalyptus globulus and Melaleuca alternifolia were encapsulated into diastearoyl phosphatidylcholine and diastearoyl phosphatidylethanolamine liposomes employing a reverse …
