We studied the efficiency of ANAR containing antibodies to morphine (dilutions C300 and C200) in the therapy of patients with the opium withdrawal syndrome. In patients with moderate to severe forms of the opium withdrawal syndrome therapeutic activity of ANAR was comparable to that of standard symptomatic drugs. ANAR possessed vegetostabilizing, sedative, and analgetic properties. Treatment with ANAR allowed us to reduce doses of psychotropic and analgetic preparations and delay the development of withdrawal symptoms by 18-24 h.

Between 1895 and 1945, the Japanese colonial government virtually eliminated opium use in Taiwan by licensing and treating existing users, prohibiting sales to others, and raising the price. We evaluate these policies using a two-part model to describe the fraction of the population using opium and consumption among users, and the rational addiction model by Becker et al. (1991). The case of an elderly Chinese male opium addict with cauliflower ears is discussed. He had no history of contact sports that could have led to auricular trauma resulting in deformed ears. Besides cauliflower ears, he had features of chronic bronchitis. The association between opium addiction and cauliflower ears was first described way back in 1932. It was attributed to the prolonged opium induced sleep on hard surface subjecting the ears to repeated pressure and trauma. With the changing pattern of drug abuse, opium abuse related cauliflower ears will become a vanishing sign.

Comparative studies involving colour tests, thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) were made on raw, prepared and dross opium with a view to establishing means for their differentiation.
