[Drug-induced toxic optic neuropathy].

Drug-induced optic neuropathy is a group of disorders in which medications cause degeneration of the optic nerve. The true prevalence of drug-induced neuropathy has not been studied, although the percentage of patients who develop optic nerve damage is known for individual medications. The common pathophysiological mechanisms are believed to be mitochondrial damage and imbalance of intracellular and extracellular free radical homeostasis. Typical symptoms of drug-induced neuropathy are reduced visual acuity in the central area, which is often bilateral, visual field disturbances, dyschromatops

Pathology of Ischemic Optic Neuropathy.

Ischemic optic neuropathy (ION) describes a state of hypoxic injury of the optic nerve. Clinically, ION is divided into anterior and posterior forms defined by the presence or absence of optic disc swelling, respectively. It is further classified as arteritic when secondary to vasculitis, and nonarteritic when not. The site of vascular occlusion for anterior ION from giant cell arteritis is the short posterior ciliary arteries, but mechanical vascular obstruction does not play a role in most nonarteritic cases. Histologically, ION is characterized by axon and glial necrosis, edema, and a spars

Abnormalities of the optic disc.

The optic disc represents the anterior end of the optic nerve, the most forward extension of the central nervous system (CNS). The optic disc gives a rare glimpse into the CNS. Hence, diseases of the CNS are often manifested on fundus examination. Abnormalities of the optic disc may reflect eye disease (such as glaucoma), problems in development (as in various syndromes), or CNS disease (such as increased intracranial pressure). Each optic nerve is composed of about 1.2 million axons deriving from the retinal ganglion cells of one eye. Optic atrophy is a morphological sequela reflecting the lo

[Discussion of terminology concerning disorders of the optic nerve and disc (author's transl)].

Progress over the past few years in knowledge concerning disorders of the optic nerve and disc leads to changes in their classification. A new terminology is proposed. It uses a minimum of terms, their very general sense being understandable by any nonophthalmologist physician. It is based upon clinical symptoms and signs, thus being immediately applicable in clinical practice.

Animal model of human disease with optic neuritis: neuropapillitis in a rat model infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

Human Angiostrongylus cantonensis (A. cantonensis) is a food-borne parasitic disease and can cause optic neuritis. Increasing clinical angiostrongyliasis cases with optic neuritis have been reported, but the pathogenesis has not been fully understood until now. Here, we applied rats with A. cantonensis infection as an animal model to study the pathogenesis of optic neuritis caused by the infection. We observed that the optic disk of experimental rats appeared hyperemic, the retina vein became thick, and the visual evoked potential (VEP) latency was prolonged. There were obvious inflammatory ce…

Investigation of the phase-contrast technique using two-dimensional amplitude transmittance filters.

Phase contrast is an optical imaging technique used to visualize phase objects through spatial filtering that combines amplitude and phase modulation. Comparable results, however, can also be achieved using purely amplitude-based filters. In this work, we present a numerical study on the influence of the transmittance shape and size of two-dimensional amplitude filters on the visualization of specific binary and quadratic phase distributions in a coherent 4f Fourier optical system. Five types of amplitude transmittance filters are analyzed: opaque disk, conical five-stepped conical, conical, G

Foveal ectopia in X-linked retinoschisis.

BACKGROUND: This study compared the position of the foveal center in patients with X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) and controls and estimated the frequency of foveal ectopia in XLRS. METHOD: Fundus photographs of 23 patients with XLRS and 25 controls were reviewed. The position of the foveal center relative to the vertical center of the optic disk was determined from magnified images and expressed as the angle between the disk and foveal centers, relative to the horizontal meridian. The shortest distance between the foveal and disk centers was also measured, using the horizontal disk diameter (…

[Bartonella henselae as a cause of optical nerve neuritis].

INTRODUCTION: Bartonella henselae is included into the group of gram-negative bacteria that can cause not so rare disease known as cat-scratch disease (CSD). This disease is characterized by the specific general symptoms, and the complications in the eyes can be manifested in the form of neuroretinitis, follicular conjunctivitis and focal chorioretinitis. In this paper clinical and epidemiological characteristics of a patient with ophthalmologic complications caused by Bartonella henselae are described. We indicate diagnostic possibilities and the criteria for making the diagnosis. CASE REPOR

Use of the holmium yttrium aluminum garnet laser for percutaneous thoracolumbar intervertebral disk ablation in dogs.

OBJECTIVE-To evaluate a laser ablation-technique for treatment of thoracolumbar intervertebral disk disease in dogs. DESIGN-Prospective case series. ANIMALS-33 dogs with signs of recurrent back pain associated with intervertebral disk disease after the initial episode had been managed conservatively for a minimum of 2 weeks. PROCEDURE-Spinal needles were placed percutaneously through the annulus fibroses to permit delivery of an optical fiber into the nucleus pulposes of thoracolumbar intervertebral disks T10-11 through L3-4. Fluoroscopy was used to guide needle placement. Holmium yttrium alum

Altered fovea in AQP4-IgG-seropositive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate disease-specific foveal shape changes in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSDs) using foveal morphometry. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included macular spectral domain optical coherence tomography scans of 52 eyes from 28 patients with aquaporin-4 immunoglobulin G (AQP4-IgG)-seropositive NMOSD, 116 eyes from 60 patients with MS, and 123 eyes from 62 healthy controls (HCs), retrospectively, and an independent confirmatory cohort comprised 33/33 patients with NMOSD/MS. The fovea was characterized using 3D foveal morphometry. We included p

Acute anterior and posterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

Criteria for diagnosis of acute ischemic optic neuropathy (acute ION) were proposed: acute ION was divided into two groups, ie, acute anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (acute AION) and acute posterior ischemic optic neuropathy (acute PION). Acute AION is characterized by pale or sometimes hyperemic papilledema in the early stage, followed by postneuritic optic atrophy. In contrast, acute PION shows normal optic disk in the early stage followed by development of simple optic atrophy. We analyzed 31 eyes of 24 cases with acute AION and 20 eyes of 18 cases with acute PION. The diagnostic criteri…

Comparing optic nerve head parameters in two Spanish dog breeds using digital planimetry.

The optic discs of dogs exhibit considerable size, shape, and colour variations, depending on the degree of myelination. This variability makes the interpretation of lesions difficult, owing to the lack of reference patterns. This study aimed to compare optic nerve head (ONH) parameters determined by digital planimetry (DP) in two pure-bred dogs, Spanish Greyhound (SG) and Spanish Water Dog (SWD). The vertical and horizontal diameters, area, circularity, and the proportion of the ONH at the tapetal or non-tapetal zone (top height and bottom height) were calculated using image treatment softwar
