Air in the orbit is usually a result of trauma to the orbit but here we report a case of spontaneously occurring orbital Pneumatocele which followed about of sneezing and clearing of nose. The rare site communication at frontoethmoid junction is highlighted with relevant review of literature.

The orbit is designed to protect and nurture the eyeball. The seven bones of the orbit enclose a pear-shaped cavity. The bones of the superior and lateral orbit are extremely strong, as opposed to the bones of the inferior and medial orbit, which are extremely weak. The strengths and weaknesses inherent to the orbital bones produce a unique pressure safety valve, designed to protect the eyeball.

We present a case of orbital tumor with skin lesions at the lateral cantus. CT scan confirmed the orbital tumor and we considered it to be malignant. The histological examination of a piece of the tumor showed tuberculous characteristics. Patient received treatment with antituberculous drugs and steroids. The tumor decreased after two months of treatment.

BACKGROUND: We report on a case of orbital cysticercosis in a 27-year-old Burmese man who presented with an orbital swelling 7 months after arriving in Australia.
METHODS: The presenting history and findings are reviewed and treatment options are discussed. A brief review of the life cycle of the tapeworm Taenia solium is provided.
RESULTS: The orbital lesion was successfully treated by surgical excision.
CONCLUSION: Cysticercosis should not be forgotten as a possible cause of unusual orbital lesions.

Orbital tuberculosis (TB) is an extremely rare condition in North America. The authors present a case of TB involving the orbit, lower lid, and zygoma and review pertinent literature regarding orbital TB. Following excision of the orbital lesion, the patient responded well to anti-TB therapy. With the reemergence of TB associated with AIDS, orbital TB may be a more frequent presentation and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of inflammatory orbital disease.

The optometrist is often the first practitioner to see patients with ocular trauma and associated orbital fractures. Trauma is now the second leading cause of blindness in the United States. Early and accurate diagnosis of orbital fractures is required to avoid compromising the binocular vision and cosmetic appearance of the patient. With an understanding of the characteristic clinical presentations of fractures and a knowledge of current imaging techniques, these disorders can be accurately diagnosed, managed, or referred by the optometrist.

In this paper the importance of the clinical, ophthalmological and radiological examination in the diagnosis of orbital fractures is stressed. Indications for operative treatment can be esthetic or functional, such as enophthalmos or diplopia. A plea is made for early diagnosis and treatment. An open approach is used for all displaced fractures in order to obtain an anatomical reduction. Currently, miniplates and screws are used more frequently for stabilization. Defects in the orbital floor should be covered preferably with autogenous bone or, if unavailable, with bovine cartilage or some syn…

Successful resection of an orbital angiolipoma in a 3-year-old child was performed. To our knowledge, this is the first report of angiolipoma in this site.

Invasion of the orbit by dipterous fly larvae is a rarely reported from of myiasis. We present a 65-year-old man with orbital myiasis caused by the tissue obligatory larvae of the Old World screw-worm fly Chrysomyia bezziana Villeneuve. Larvae were found invading the orbital apex and exenteration was carried out to prevent intracranial invasion. In this case of orbital myiasis, CT scanning was used to document the extent of intraorbital invasion. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of ophthalmomyiasis caused by C. bezziana.

Forty-nine cases of orbital cellulitis were reviewed. The average age of patients at presentation was 31 years. The onset of symptoms varied from seven days or less in 28 patients, one to four weeks in 17 patients, and more than four weeks in four patients. The leucocyte count, available in 33 patients, was greater than 10 X 10(9)/l in only nine. Abnormal sinuses were noted radiographically in 61%. Computed tomography scans, performed on nine patients, revealed non-localised inflammation in three and an orbital mass in six. Cultures, in general, were disappointing. Seventeen surgical procedure…

Although orbital or subperiosteal abscess may originate from a number of sources, paranasal ethmoidal sinus disease is the most common source of infection, particularly in children. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are necessary to prevent severe visual loss and even death. The authors review the five-group classification of orbital abscess and summarize data regarding source, bacteriology, treatment and visual results from 13 series reporting 148 patients. Four new cases are presented in detail. Diagnostic procedures, including laboratory testing, sinus radiography, ultrasound and CT scanning, …

A 37-year-old man had epistaxis, headache, intermittent swelling of the periorbital region, proptosis, epiphora, and chronic sinusitis. X-ray films showed marked erosion of the midline facial bones, total opacification of both maxillary sinuses, and clouding of the sphenoid and left ethmoid sinuses. He also had a cutaneous-maxillary sinus fistula and a purulent discharge. A histopathologic examination disclosed areas of acute and chronic inflammation with occasional noncaseating granulomas. Biopsy specimens and postoperative sputum cultures grew Mycobacterium tuberculosis, although the patient…

A new technique for exposure of the orbit for decompression of the orbit is described. It may be used for other purposes such as orbital fracture repair, orbital exploration for tumors in the inferior orbit, or reconstruction of the orbit by a variety of methods. The technique provides ready, broad exposure. The approach also avoids not uncommon complications of the eyelid, approaches to the orbit such as skin shrinkage and ectropion of the lower lid. It also results in minimal cosmetic deformity.

Orbital auscultation is recommended as a screening technique in patients with subjective bruit or tinnitus, persistent conjunctivitis, exophthalmos, headache, seizure disorder and other neurologic and psychiatric symptoms. It can reveal carotid-cavernous fistula, cerebral arteriovenous malformation, an intracranial mass which is producing increased intracerebral pressure, Paget's disease and other vascular abnormalities.
