INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to compare the validity, reliability, and time needed to use the Eismann index, the Eismann-Farcnik (EF) index, and the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN).
METHODS: One hundred pretreatment study casts of adolescent patients in the permanent dentition period (mean age, 15.4 years; SD, 0.4 year; 53 girls, 47 boys) were used. Three examiners trained and calibrated in the use of the Eismann and EF indexes and the IOTN scored the casts using the 3 indexes. A panel of 10 orthodontists individually rated the same casts for degree of malocclusion sever…

Bonded fixed retainers are frequently used nowadays as the main-and often the only-retention protocol after orthodontic treatment. The expectations for long-lasting lifetime stability of the occlusion led orthodontists to seek the ultimate retention protocol with minimal patient compliance, including fixed retainers. However, fixed retainers have many disadvantages and risks that should be considered in advance. Different failures of fixed retainers are described and categorized, and the workflow for the retreatment of poor occlusion after relapse, despite the fixed retainers, is described. Th…

Failure of eruption of a permanent first molar is a relatively infrequent clinical condition that affects the normal development of dentition and may cause malocclusion. There are two conditions that might result in failure of eruption: (1) mechanical failure (ankylosis) and (2) primary failure of eruption, with different clinical features and therapeutic approaches for each. It is often challenging for orthodontists and pediatric dentists to establish differential diagnoses of these conditions to ensure a successful treatment outcome. The purpose of this case report is to discuss the diagnosi…

The Interdisciplinary Orofacial Examination Protocol for Children and Adolescents (Protocolo de exploración interdisciplinaria orofacial para niños y adolescents, Barcelona, 2008) is very useful in providing a fast, initial, expedient detection of possible morphological and functional disorders, and to guide the patient toward the appropriate professionals. With this tool it is possible to detect the risk factors which can negatively affect morphological and functional harmony and guide patients toward the necessary treatment as early as possible. This Protocol, developed by 4 orthodontists, 1…

The purpose of this paper is to briefly review some of the principals of ideal tooth shape and morphology and demonstrate how to use tooth reshaping through enameloplasty to treat and finish orthodontic cases to much more esthetic conclusions. This paper demonstrates the significant improvement to a smile orthodontists can achieve if they understand the principles of dental esthetics. In assessing smile design, the patient must be evaluated in three dimensions, and both dental and skeletal components must be considered. Expanded documentation in the form of frontal, profile, and oblique images…

Over the past 10 years, orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) has been increasingly recognized as an iatrogenic consequence of orthodontic treatment. With this in mind, orthodontists should take all known measures to reduce the occurrence of OIIRR. The evidence that we present in this review suggests several procedures known today that can avert this phenomenon; however, none of them can be relied on to completely prevent OIIRR. We believe that future studies might clarify the exact cause and course of OIIRR and, hopefully, help eliminate it. In Part I, we discussed the …

There is an agreement among orthodontists that a posterior crossbite relationship should be treated early. The Haas expansion appliance is frequently chosen whenever a maxillary skeletal constriction exists in the deciduous, mixed, or permanent dentition. In this study we evaluated the efficacy of rapid maxillary expansion for 32 children between 5 and 11 years of age, by inspection of anteroposterior radiographs. Our results confirm previous data in the literature that the triangular opening in the frontal alveolar area is greater than in other parts of the midpalatal suture. It is evident th…

The impact of respiratory function on children's craniofacial growth has received increasing attention from orthodontists and parents. There is a higher pediatric sleep-disordered breathing risk prevalence in the orthodontic population compared with a general population sample, and orthodontic practitioners need to pay close attention to the respiratory function of their pediatric patients. For children with upper airway obstruction and related dentofacial and functional abnormalities, clinicians should comprehensively consider the site and severity of upper airway obstruction, the clinical fe…

Class III malocclusion is a growth-related challenging condition for orthodontists. We present a case of a 11-year-old girl with a skeletal class III malocclusion with bilateral cross bite, and a functional shift of the lower dental midline. A multiphase clear aligners' treatment was scheduled with the aim of removing all dental interferences which involved an anterior displacement of the mandible. At one-year follow-up, clear aligners' therapy resulted in skeletal and dental improvements. Clear aligners therapy represents a valid alternative to fixed appliance therapy in the early interceptio…

There are three kinds of mechanisms regulating the growth and development of skeletal tissue: Bone growth, bone modeling and bone remodeling … velopment of cranial-facial bones and orthodontic treatment. At last, this article suggests Chinese orthodontists use the terms "bone modeling" and "bone remodeling" more precisely to avoid scientific confusion and barriers to scientific exchange with other biomedical disciplines.

Transposition is a form of ectopia, in which 2 adjacent teeth change positions in the dental arch or 1 tooth develops in a position occupied by a nonadjacent tooth. Transposition can be partial or complete. Despite their low prevalence in the general population, transpositions are a challenge to orthodontists, especially if treatment aims to correct the order of the teeth. This article reports the diagnosis, planning, and treatment of a unilateral maxillary canine-first premolar transposition in a female patient treated orthodontically without premolar extraction and with correction of the tra…

A questionnaire was sent to 193 United Kingdom Hospital Consultant Orthodontists, in order to survey their individual involvement and clinical protocols for neonatal cleft palate impressions. Information regarding any untoward events that might have been experienced with this procedure during the period 1983-1992 was sought. Sixteen episodes where withdrawal of an impression had been extremely difficult and five respiratory obstructions due to an impression fragment were reported. Eighty-nine cyanotic events were reported, of which four resulted in asphyxiation, although none progressed to a f…

A full understanding of soft tissue behaviour, including muscle action, and the correct diagnosis of the basic bony discrepancies are essential to the success of operations for the correction of facial disharmony. In the author's experience, cephalometric measurements are invaluable in obtaining a correct diagnosis of the facial disharmony and once mastered make these operations more interesting for all concerned. Unfortunately, traditional cephalometric measurements, although useful to orthodontists, are tedious and often misleading to oral surgeons. This article describes a much simplified a…

UNLABELLED: Transmigration is a tooth pathology in which the migrating tooth bud passes the median plane.
METHODS: This study is a presentation of the diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes in the cases of 4 stomach teeth transmigrations diagnosed in 3 patients with mandibular retrognathia which was a complication after osteitis in the postnatal period and infancy.
RESULTS: Extending imaging diagnostics to include CT, most preferably CBCT, makes it possible to precisely evaluate a transmigrated canine's position and to plan a course of treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: Planning of the treatment of teeth

A 13-year-old boy was presented to oral and maxillofacial surgeon with chin and preauricular pain after afallfrom his skateboard. A panoramic radiograph did not show any indication of a fracture of the mandibular collum. Two weeks later, the boy was referred by his orthodontist to the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of a medical centre in connection with a relapse ofa class III malocclusion despite a recently completed treatment of that problem. A computertomogram displayed a fracture of the mandibular collum. In case afracture of the mandibular collum is suspected, imaging from 2

The presence of a gingival recession prior to orthodontic treatment is a real problem. Patients are concerned about losing their teeth but may also complain of their unpleasant appearance or root sensitivity in the exposed area. The orthodontist is not sure whether orthodontic treatment can be performed or whether the tooth movement will not aggravate the recession and whether periodontal surgery needs to be done before or after orthodontic treatment. The aim of this paper is to present recent data from the literature and several clinical situations in adults in order to submit a treatment seq
