OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease characterized by osteophyte development, fibrosis, and articular cartilage damage. Effects of exogenous transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) isoforms and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) suggest a role for these growth factors in the pathogenesis of OA. The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of endogenous TGFbeta and BMP during papain-induced OA-like changes in mice.
METHODS: We used adenoviral overexpression of TGFbeta and BMP antagonists to block growth factor signaling. An adenovirus expressing a secreted, pan-specific TGFbe…

BACKGROUND: Esophageal cervical spondylosis is a rare type of cervical spondylosis which causes dysphagia. Surgical osteophyte resection is taken when conservative treatment does not respond. However, few reports on its operation and postoperative follow-up. We first present a case showing how the Zero-Profile implant system is utilized to treat dysphagia caused by noncontiguous anterior cervical osteophytes.
CASE PRESENTATION: A patient with progressive dysphagia was referred to our department. Imaging examinations revealed a large diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) related ante…

OBJECTIVE: Gap planning in navigated total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a critical concern. Osteophytes are normally removed prior to gap planning, with the exception of posterior condylar osteophytes of the femur, which are removed after posterior condylar resection. This study investigated how posterior condylar osteophytes affect gap balancing during surgery.
METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on 40 primary varus osteoarthritic knees with a posterior condylar osteophyte that underwent TKA navigation. For all knees, computed tomography (CT) was performed to evaluate osteophyte posi…

Osteoarthritis (OA) occurs naturally in cynomolgus macaques. The purposes of the present study were to: 1) develop histological measurement schemes to measure the cross-sectional area of axial and abaxial osteophytes in the proximal tibia; 2) determine the effects of long-term estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) on osteophyte prevalence and area; and 3) assess relationships between osteophyte size and risk factors of OA (age and body weight) and concurrent bone and cartilage lesions. Adult female cynomolgus macaques (n=180) were bilaterally ovariectomized (OVX) and were treated for 3 years with…

Osteophytes in osteoarthritis (OA) joints contribute to restriction of joint movement, joint pain, and OA progression, but little is known about osteophyte regulators. Examination of gene expression related to cartilage extracellular matrix, endochondral ossification, and growth factor signaling in articular cartilage and osteophytes obtained from OA knee joints showed that several genes such as COL1A1, VCAN, BGLAP, BMP8B, RUNX2, and SOST were overexpressed in osteophytes compared with articular cartilage. Ratios of mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells, which were characterized by co-expression o…

OBJECTIVE: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is characterized by osteophytes in the anterior vertebrae, and the presence of aorta may have an impact on their formation. However, the anatomical positional relationship between the aorta and osteophytes in patients with DISH remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the position of osteophytes in relation to aorta in DISH, and the influence of aortic pulsation on the formation of osteophytes from the perspective of morphology.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 101 patients diagnosed with DISH and symptomatic…

BACKGROUND: Anterior cervical osteophytes (ACOs) are a common radiologic finding in the elderly; rarely, they can cause dysphagia, dysphonia, and dyspnea. Symptomatic ACOs are most commonly found between C4 and C7 and much less commonly at higher cervical levels. Here, we present a case series, with an example case of a 57-year-old woman with high cervical osteophytes at C1-C2 causing globus sensation, dysphagia, and dysphonia. Additionally, we provide a literature review regarding the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of ACOs, with a focus on management of high ACOs.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 57-ye…

(1) The development of periarticular osteophytes in experimental osteoarthritis in the dog degins as early as 3 days after induction of the disease process. (2) Development of the osteophytes is still proceeding 48 weeks after induction. (3) The common site for development of the osteophyte is at the marginal zone where synovial membrane merges with fibrocartilage. (4) At this site the osteophyte begins as a deposition of outside the existing femoral bone cortex. (5) Further deposition of new bone and resorption lead to a remodelling which ultimately produces a mature osteophyte having a trabe…

BACKGROUND: Ankle osteoarthritis (OA) mainly arises from trauma, particularly lateral ligament injuries. Among lateral ligament injuries, ankles with calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) injuries exhibit increased instability and can be a risk factor ankle OA progression. However, the relationship between CFL injury and OA progression remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to assess the relationship between CFL injuries and ankle OA by investigating stress changes and osteophyte formation in subtalar joint.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and plain rad…
