Models of Oxygen Induced Retinopathy in Rodents.

Much of the knowledge we have gained into the development of pathological ocular angiogenesis has come from the development of in vivo models that enable functional assessment of key components of signaling pathways in disease progression. Indeed, rodent models have facilitated identification of several therapeutics that target pathological angiogenesis. Two of the most widely used rodent models of oxygen induced retinopathy (OIR), Smith's mouse model and Penn's rat model reproducibly induce neovascularization reminiscent of the disease retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). In this chapter we disc

[Fibromyalgia and myalgic encephalomyelitis: The oxygen clue].

In recent years, different authors have described various musculoskeletal oxygenation alterations in patients with fibromyalgia with or without myalgic encephalomyelitis. These patients suffer from meteor-sensitivity worsening their symptoms in lower atmospheric pressure climates (decreased oxygen pressure). They also respond successfully to hyperbaric chamber treatment (increased oxygen pressure), and to coenzime Q10 intake (improved use of oxygen). Having reviewed these findings, oxygen therapy is postulated in higher concentration and pressures to relief the symptoms of fibromyalgia with or

Respiratory Protection for Oxygen Deficient Atmospheres.

This article describes several aspects of oxygen (O2) deficiency with an emphasis on respirator programs and respirator selection. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) 29 CFR 1910.134 and ANSI/ASSE Z88.2-2015 (Z88.2) have much in common. However, their exposure criteria and terminology used for describing levels of O2-deficiency and the approaches to assessing O2-deficiency differ. These differences can have a significant impact on an employer's respirator program and respirator selections for workplaces at altitudes above sea level. Under certain circumstances, Z88.2 lea

Oxygen Saturation Targeting and Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia.

Oxygen saturation targeting is widely used in neonatal intensive care, but the optimal target range in very preterm infants has been uncertain and is the subject of recent debate and research. This review briefly discusses the technology of oxygen monitoring and the role of oxygen toxicity in preterm infants. The background to the recent trials of oxygen saturation targeting in acute and continuing care of very preterm infants is reviewed, and the findings and implications of the recent trials, particularly with respect to bronchopulmonary dysplasia, are discussed.

Oxygen tension, H2S, and NO bioavailability: is there an interaction?

Molecular oxygen (O2) is an essential component for survival and development. Variation in O2 levels leads to changes in molecular signaling and ultimately affects the physiological functions of many organisms. Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are two gaseous cellular signaling molecules that play key roles in several physiological functions involved in maintaining vascular homeostasis including vasodilation, anti-inflammation, and vascular growth. Apart from the aforementioned functions, NO and H2S are believed to mediate hypoxic responses and serve as O2 chemosensors in biologica

Adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen for necrotizing fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves the therapeutic administration of 100% oxygen in a pressure chamber at pressures above one atmosphere absolute. This therapy has been used as an adjunct to surgery and antibiotics in the treatment of patients with necrotizing fasciitis with the aim of reducing morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVES: To review the evidence concerning the use of HBOT as an adjunctive treatment for patients with necrotizing fasciitis (NF). Specifically, we wish to address the following questions.1. Does administration of HBOT reduce mortality or morbidity associ

[Hyperbaric oxygenation and penis erectile dysfunction].

Relaxation and contraction factors influencing penile erection are produced and released by the central and peripheral nerves as well as intracavernosal sinus gap and vascular endothelial cells. Aging, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and spinal cord injury can influence these factors. Further researches of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) on the erectile dysfunction (ED) can provide some theoretical evidences for the clinical treatment of ED.

Exerted pressure by an in-flight oxygen mask.

BACKGROUND: F-16 pilots wear an in-flight oxygen mask to prevent hypoxemia. In the contact area with the mask, the pilots experience nasal discomfort and pain, and may even develop nasal deformities. A likely cause is the pressure exerted by the mask. In this study the hypothesis was that the change in pressure exerted on the nose would be higher than on the chin, an area free of symptoms. METHODS: Six F-16 pilots and five healthy former F-16 pilots volunteered to participate in this observational pilot study. At baseline the pilots donned mask and helmet. The median delta pressure (deltap) r

Evolution and physiology of neural oxygen sensing.

Major evolutionary trends in animal physiology have been heavily influenced by atmospheric O2 levels. Amongst other important factors, the increase in atmospheric O2 which occurred in the Pre-Cambrian and the development of aerobic respiration beckoned the evolution of animal organ systems that were dedicated to the absorption and transportation of O2, e.g., the respiratory and cardiovascular systems of vertebrates. Global variations of O2 levels in post-Cambrian periods have also been correlated with evolutionary changes in animal physiology, especially cardiorespiratory function. Oxygen tran

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment for decompression sickness.

Decompression sickness (DCS) is a clinical syndrome occurring usually within 24 hours of a reduction in ambient pressure. DCS occurs most commonly in divers ascending from a minimum depth of 20 feet (6 meters) of sea water, but can also occur during rapid decompression from sea level to altitude (typically > 17,000 feet / 5,200 meters). Manifestations are one or more of the following: most commonly, joint pain, hypesthesia, generalized fatigue or rash; less common but more serious, motor weakness, ataxia, pulmonary edema, shock and death. The cause of DCS is in situ bubble formation in tissues

Supporting oxygenation in acute respiratory failure.

Strategies to support oxygenation can cause substantial harm through lung stretch injury, oxygen toxicity, transfusion risks and cardiac over-stimulation. Traditional goals of maintaining near normal cardiorespiratory parameters are most likely overly simplistic and are insensitive and nonspecific for tissue hypoxic effects. In order to reduce iatrogenic harm, it is conceivable that clinicians could be comfortable with lower levels of arterial oxygen content (eg, oxyhemoglobin values of < 88%: so called "permissive hypoxemia"), provided that there are ways to effectively monitor tissue hypoxia

Oxygen therapy and oximetry in the delivery room.

Pulse oximetry is increasingly being used in the delivery room. Expert recommendations state that oxygen therapy during newborn resuscitation should be guided by pulse oximetry. Obtaining accurate and stable oxygen saturation and heart rate information from a pulse oximeter in the delivery room can be challenging. Understanding the properties of this device is important in overcoming these challenges. This article describes several aspects of pulse oximetry use in the delivery room ranging from technical issues with the device itself to clinical applications of the technology.

An oxygen pumping anode for electrowinning aluminium.

The chemical potential of oxygen ions at the novel oxygen pumping anode for electrowinning aluminum was manipulated by the electromotive forces to create thermodynamic stability. It is our anticipation that this newly designed anode can be applied to electrochemical metallurgy of other metals, such as the direct electrochemical reduction of TiO2 in the FFC process.

Evidence for oxygen use in preterm infants.

AIM: To review the evidence for optimal oxygen use in preterm infants. RESULTS: Clinicians have embraced lower saturation targets to minimize retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Large randomized trials now have shown that while such targets reduce ROP, neonatal mortality is increased significantly. CONCLUSIONS: Preterm infants should be resuscitated with blended oxygen (30-90%) targeted to avoid hyperoxia. Later, saturation management remains uncertain. Until ongoing trials and follow-up are complete, it is prudent to avoid saturation of 85-89%.
