Preferences for risks and benefits of treatment outcomes for chronic low back pain: Choice-based conjoint measure development and discrete choice experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding individual patient preferences for chronic low back pain (cLBP) outcomes is essential for targeting available therapeutic options; yet tools to elicit patient outcome preferences are limited. OBJECTIVE: To develop and test a choice-based conjoint (CBC) measure, commonly used in behavioral economics research, to elicit what outcomes patients with cLBP want to achieve and avoid. DESIGN: We developed a survey-based CBC measure to allow patients to make risk/benefit trade-off choices between possible treatment outcomes. After extensive literature, clinician, and patie

Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Thai version of the core outcome measures index for the back (COMI-back) in patients with low back pain.

PURPOSE: To translate and culturally adapt the Core Outcome Measures Index for the back (COMI-back) into Thai and to evaluate its psychometric properties in Thai-speaking patients with low back pain (LBP). METHODS: The translation process followed a standardized forward-backward method with two independent translators, followed by synthesis and back-translation. An expert committee reviewed the translations for cultural and conceptual equivalence. Pre-testing was done with Thai patients to refine the questionnaire. The validation study included 131 patients with LBP, who completed the Thai CO

Volume index as a new measure of cartilage loss: a retrospective MRI-based study of chondral injury patterns in adult patients with knee pain.

BACKGROUND: Knee pain is one of the commonest symptoms in patients who attend the Orthopaedic outpatient clinics. Chondral defects result in a painful knee. Incidence of chondral defect is reported to be between 5 and 10% over the age of 40. It is well documented that chondral defects can lead to osteoarthritis. Early detection of these lesions and cartilage repair surgery can delay the onset of osteoarthritis. The purpose of this study is to highlight the incidence, associations and correlations between opposing cartilage defects in patients who present to the knee clinic with pain. METHODS:

Effects of Anxiety and Depression Measured via the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale on Early Pain and Range of Motion After Rotator Cuff Repair.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anxiety and depression are independent predictors of clinical outcomes after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. However, few studies have evaluated correlations between outcomes such as pain and range of motion (ROM) after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and preoperative anxiety and depression. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of preoperative anxiety and depression, measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), on early pain and ROM after rotator cuff repair. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. METHODS: A total of 144 consecutive pat

"Feel the Force"-Prevalence of Subjectively Assessed Saddle Fit Problems in Swiss Riding Horses and Their Association With Saddle Pressure Measurements and Back Pain.

Ill-fitting saddles can impair the well-being and performance of horses. Saddle fit is generally assessed subjectively by a trained professional or with an electronic saddle pressure mat, but little is known about the agreement between both methods. The study aims were (1) to assess the prevalence of saddle fit issues in a riding sound Swiss horse population, (2) to investigate how well the subjective assessment correlates with objectively measured pressure magnitude and distribution under the saddle during riding, and (3) how well both correlate with back pain of the horse. Only 10% of the sa

In vivo measurements of medial branch nerve depth and adjacent osseous structures for ablation of facet-related back pain: Predictors for patient candidacy.

BACKGROUND: Medial branch (MB) targeting during RF ablation for facetogenic back pain is usually performed with flouroscopic guidance yet no specific measurements on the target depth have been published. In order to understand candidacy for other potential ablation methods, we sought to determine the actual MB depth and measurements of adjacent osseous structures. METHODS: CT scans without contrast of the lumbar spine performed in the supine position were retrospectively analyzed in 100 patients. Axial slices less than or equal to 2.5 mm with sagittal and coronal reformations were evaluated.

Development, psychometric evaluation and validation of a brief measure of emotional preoperative stress (B-MEPS) to predict moderate to intense postoperative acute pain.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative stress might influence postoperative pain, thereby, it is desirable to assess it more precisely. Thus, we developed and evaluated the psychometric properties of a brief measure of emotional preoperative stress (B-MEPS) index using Item Response Category Characteristic Curves. We validated and assessed whether the B-MEPS can predict moderate to intense acute postoperative pain (MIAPP). METHODS: We included 863 adult patients who underwent elective surgeries (ASA I-III physical status). The B-MEPS was constructed based on items selected from instruments to assess anxiet

Brain activation due to postoperative pain from the right hand measured with regional cerebral blood flow using positron emission tomography.

Background Brain activation resulting from acute postoperative pain has to our knowledge not previously been studied using positron emission tomography, except from one case study. The aim of this study was to monitor activation in brain sensory pathways during acute pain after surgery of the hand. A secondary aim was to compare brain activation in clinical postoperative pain to that previously reported, by the same research group, for a model of experimental pain from the same body area. Increase in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) is presumed to indicate neuronal activation and decrease i

Anthropometric measurements and growth as predictors of low-back pain: a cohort study of children followed up from the age of 11 to 22 years.

Body height is an alleged risk factor for low-back pain (LBP) in adulthood, but its importance is obscure during childhood and adolescence. We studied growth for its association with the incidence of LBP in a population study of 430 children who were examined five times: at the age 11,12,13,14 and 22 years. Body height and weight and the degrees of trunk asymmetry, thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis were measured at every examination. The history of LBP was obtained by a structured questionnaire at the ages of 14 and 22 years. The incidence of LBP was defined as pain, which occurred on eigh

Central sensitization across nociceptive, neuropathic, and mixed chronic pain: a multidimensional longitudinal study protocol integrating neurophysiological, cognitive, and psychological measures.

Chronic pain represents a major clinical and public health challenge due to its multidimensional nature and frequent resistance to treatment. Beyond the traditional distinction between nociceptive and neuropathic pain, increasing evidence highlights central sensitization as a key transdiagnostic mechanism underlying pain persistence, symptom severity, and reduced treatment response. However, longitudinal studies integrating neurophysiological, cognitive, psychological, and behavioral dimensions across different chronic pain phenotypes remain limited. This study describes a prospective, longitu

A Statistical and AI Analysis of the Frequency Spectrum in the Measurement of the Center of Pressure Track in the Seated Position in Healthy Subjects and Subjects with Low Back Pain.

Measuring postural control in an upright standing position is the standard method. However, this diagnostic method has floor or ceiling effects and its implementation is only possible to a limited extent. Assessing postural control directly on the trunk in a sitting position and consideration of the results in the spectrum in conjunction with an AI-supported evaluation could represent an alternative diagnostic method quantifying neuromuscular control. In a prospective cross-sectional study, 188 subjects aged between 18 and 60 years were recruited and divided into two groups: "LowBackPain" vs.
