Statistical methods analyzing changes in dispersion patterns of parasites among hosts were applied to Schistosoma haematobium egg excretion data from a five-year study of a cohort of 1,400 boys in 3 villages in Upper Egypt. Despite significant changes in mean density of the parasites in the first 4 years, the degree of aggregation of S. haematobium among the cohort did not change markedly in analysis of egg count data obtained semiannually. Two other related measures of dispersion, mean crowding and patchiness, were also obtained and compared to prevalence and mean intensity, the components de

Anatomic and digestion studies were done on rectal and colonic schistosomal polyps from 30 patients. Results indicate that schistosomal colonic polyposis is principally due to high, localized egg burdens of Schistosoma mansoni or S. haematobium resulting in damage to the muscularis mucosa of the colon. Furthermore, atypically focal oviposition by S. mansoni is probably more important in genesis of rectocolonic polyposis than is schistosomiasis haematobium.

Casuistic reports supplement parasitological and epidemiological references to the affection of man with Fasciola hepatica, Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis felineus. Due to the increase of the tourist traffic must be reckoned with a more frequent appearance of these parasitoses little known in Middle Europe.

Wildlife rehabilitation plays a central role in the conservation of threatened primates, yet parasite dynamics during captivity are rarely reported, particularly in relation to release readiness. We investigated gastrointestinal helminth infection patterns in rehabilitating Javan slow lorises (Nycticebus javanicus), a Critically Endangered species heavily impacted by the illegal wildlife trade. Using repeated fecal sampling (147 samples from 19 adults) and Bayesian mixed-effects models, we examined parasite richness, Shannon diversity, infection probability, and egg-shedding intensity in relat

Emerging cases of Fasciola and Paramphistomes co-infection have been reported, especially in tropical regions. Thisis due to Fasciola and Paramphistomes sharing biological factors which influence the pattern of transmission, especially in faecal egg shedding due to interaction and competition in the definitive host. Most reports surveyed the occurrence of fasciolosis in ruminants with a lack of observation of faecal egg distribution. Therefore, present study is aimed to assess the distribution of Fasciola and Paramphistomes faecal egg count (fec) in co-infected large ruminants in Larut, Matang

Total and Schistosoma related IgE were estimated in sera from 29 active schistosomal patients with different infection intensities and different pathological complications. Schistosomal patients had significantly higher total IgE levels and parasite related IgE was detected in 89.65% of them. A highly significant correlation was found between total and specific IgE. No correlation was found between neither total IgE nor parasite related IgE and the log and mean of stool egg counts. The levels of total and parasite related IgE did not differ between hepatosplenomegalic and intestinal patients o

BACKGROUND: Endoparasite infections cause economic losses in dairy farming. Understanding the factors that influence endoparasite prevalence and egg/oocyst excretion is essential for effective parasite control. Environmental and management factors play an important role at herd level; however, factors related to the individual cow, such as the parity number or lactation stage, also contribute to infection. In addition, it is still unclear to what extent co-infections with other endoparasites influence prevalence and egg/oocyst excretion rates.
METHODS: Faecal samples from 1,126 cows from 24 d

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis for surveillance relies on microscopic detection of ova in Kato-Katz (KK) prepared slides. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based platforms for parasitic eggs may be developed using a robust image set with defined labels by reference microscopists. This study aimed to determine interobserver variability among reference microscopists in identifying parasite ova.
METHODS: Images of parasite ova taken from KK prepared slides were labelled according to species by two reference microscopists (M1 and M2). A third reference micr

BACKGROUND: Helminthiases are neglected diseases that affect billions of people worldwide, particularly those with inadequate sanitation, poor hygiene practices, and limited access to clean water. Due to frequent underreporting, wastewater-based epidemiology has emerged as a valuable tool for monitoring parasitic infections at population-level. This study aimed to detect and quantify helminth eggs in untreated sewage sludge from eight wastewater treatment plants located in different Brazilian socioeconomic regions.
METHODS: The study was conducted from June 2021 to December 2023 in Goiás and

The fox tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis, is the etiological agent of the severe zoonotic disease alveolar echinococcosis. The Sedimentation and Counting Technique (SCT) has long been considered the gold standard for detecting these worms in the intestines of dead foxes. Several alternative methods, including the Segmental Sedimentation and Counting Technique (SSCT), have been developed, aiming to reduce time of analysis while maintaining high sensitivity. In this study, the performance of the SSCT was first evaluated by comparison with the SCT in the context of E. multilocularis surveill

Previous vaccination trials have demonstrated that thiol proteins affinity purified from Ostertagia ostertagi excretory-secretory products (O. ostertagi ES-thiol) are protective against homologous challenge. Here we have shown that protection induced by this vaccine was consistent across four independent vaccine-challenge experiments. Protection is associated with reduced cumulative faecal egg counts across the duration of the trials, relative to control animals. To better understand the diversity of antigens in O. ostertagi ES-thiol we used high-resolution shotgun proteomics to identify 490 u

In Australian pastoral dairy systems, a variety of 'routine' anthelmintic programs are used in lactating cows varying from nil anthelmintic use to bi-annual application. Anthelmintic resistance has been repeatedly diagnosed on dairy farms and studies have indicated variable milk production benefits from anthelmintics internationally. We aimed to identify the predominant gastrointestinal parasites in recently calved dairy cows in south-west Victoria and examined the relationship between individual faecal egg counts (FEC) and other cow and management factors such as body condition score, age, an

BACKGROUND: The Kato-Katz method is a commonly used diagnostic tool for helminth infections, particularly in field studies. This method can yield inaccurate results when samples contain eggs that are similar in appearance, such as Minute Intestinal Fluke (MIF) and Opisthorchis viverrini (OV) eggs. The close resemblance of eggs can be problematic and raises the possibility of false diagnoses. The objectives were to compare the diagnostic performance of the Kato-Katz method for accurately identifying MIF and OV and to provide evidence of possible misclassification. Methods: Based on questionnai

Gastrointestinal parasitism is a major constraint to goat productivity, particularly in resource-limited production systems. The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between faecal egg count and the health status of different classes of Nguni goats. Body condition score (BCS), packed cell volume (PCV), FAMACHA score, and faecal egg count (FEC) were measured in 120 goats of different classes (weaners, does and bucks) across seasons. The identified gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) were Strongyloides (30 %), Haemonchus contortus (28 %), Trichostrongylus sp. (23 %), Oesophagost

Association between ovine β-globin polymorphisms and resistance against haemonchosis was described and related to the mechanism of high oxygen affinity βA ➔ βC switch during anaemia, but there are no studies regarding the involved local host responses. Phenotypic parameters and local responses were evaluated in sheep from two β-globin haplotypes naturally infected with Haemonchus contortus. Morada Nova lambs were monitored at 63, 84 and 105 days of age for faecal egg counts and packed cell volume (PCV) under natural infection with H. contortus. At 210 days of age, lambs of Hb-AA and Hb-BB β-gl

Experimental studies and clinical trials have been showing that probiotics are promising in the prevention and control of parasite infections. B. clausii, obtained from Enterogermina®, was cultured to obtain cell-free culture supernatant (CFS) and spores to evaluate its schistosomicidal effect in vitro and in vivo against Schistosoma mansoni, respectively. For in vitro and in vivo analysis mice were infected with 120 and 50 cercariae, respectively. Couples of adult worms, recovered on day 45 of infection, were exposed to CFS. The in vivo assay was performed for 100 days, where all animals were

Conventional microscopy is the standard procedure for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis, despite its limited sensitivity, reliance on skilled personnel, and the fact that it is error prone. Here, we report the performance of the innovative (semi-)automated Schistoscope 5.0 for optical digital detection and quantification of Schistosoma haematobium eggs in urine, using conventional microscopy as the reference standard. At baseline, 487 participants in a rural setting in Nigeria were assessed, of which 166 (34.1%) tested S. haematobium positive by conventional microscopy. Captured images from the

Sickness behaviour has been suggested as an applicable indicator for monitoring disease. Deviating feeding behaviour and activity can provide information about animals' health and welfare status. Recent advances in sensor technology enable monitoring of such behaviours and could potentially be utilized as an indicator of gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections. This study investigated activity and rumination patterns in first-season grazing steers exposed to subclinical infection levels of the GIN Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora. At turnout, animals were allocated to one of four
