[Mucoepidermoid cancer of parotid gland in 14-years-old girl--case report].

INTRODUCTION: Malignant tumors of salivary glands are rare, especially in children. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We present a case report of 14-years-old girl affected by mucoepidermoid cancer of parotid gland. RESULTS: Patient was admitted to our Department in May 2007 due to small, hard, moveable tumor localized in right mandibular angle. The VII nerve function was normal. Fine needle aspiration revealed inflammatory cells without atypical cytologic features. Intraoperative tumor was hard, with irregular surface, surrounded by capsule, connected with the main trunk of facial nerve and cartilaginou

Diffusion-weighted echo-planar MRI: a valuable tool for differentiating primary parotid gland tumors?

PURPOSE: To investigate the feasibility of using diffusion-weighted (DW) echo-planar imaging (EPI) for differentiating primary parotid gland tumors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty consecutive patients with a suspected primary tumor of the parotid gland were examined with a DW EPI sequence (TR 1,500 msec, TE 77 msec, field of view 250 x 250 mm, pixel size 2.10 x 1.95 mm, section thickness 5 mm). The b factors used were 0, 500, and 1,000 sec/mm (2). Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps were digitally transferred to MRIcro (Chris Rorden, University of Nottingham, Great Britain) and evaluated w

Embryonal mastoid rhabdomyosarcoma in a three years old child: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common malignant soft tissue tumor in the pediatric age, especially in the head and neck region; in the orbit and the nasopharynx. The middle ear is a very rare site for this neoplasm as it accounts for only 10 % of head neck rhabdomyosarcoma. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report here the case of a three years-old child who was admitted to the emergency room for a left parotid and retro-auricular swelling with grade V facial palsy. The patient experienced chronic otorrhea with left facial palsy for two months. Two weeks later, a left parotid swelling appe

Sclerosing rhabdomyosarcoma of the parotid gland in an adult.

Primary rhabdomyosarcoma of salivary glands is an extremely rare neoplasm, mostly seen in children. A newly described subtype of rhabdomyosarcoma, sclerosing rhabdomyosarcoma, has not yet been reported in this location. We report on a parotid gland tumor characterized by infiltrative growth of primitive type of neoplastic cells showing strong and diffuse nuclear positivity for MyoD1 and myogenin and by prominent hyalinized/chondroid matrix with some myxoid foci. The tumor recurred several times, and in recurrent tumors, differentiation into strap myoid cells appeared. There were no distant met

Adult sialoblastoma harbouring FGFR2 p.C382R gene mutation.

Sialoblastoma is a rare salivary gland malignancy with most cases described in pediatric population. Adult presentation is rare, with only three cases reported to date in English literature. Recent molecular studies have identified recurrent activating FGFR2 p.C382R mutations in a subset of sialoblastomas, which appear to define a molecularly distinct group and may be associated with more aggressive behaviour. We report a basaloid parotid gland neoplasm in a 57-year-old man. The tumour showed solid basaloid morphology, high proliferative activity, and an immunophenotype overlapping with high-g

Salivary Gland Secretory Carcinoma in the Facial Region: A Pediatric Case Presentation.

Salivary gland secretory carcinoma (SC) represents a rare, slow-growing, low-grade malignant neoplasm that occurs mainly in the parotid gland. It has a slight predilection for the male gender and usually appears in adulthood. The morphologic and immunohistochemical features are like those observed in secretory breast carcinoma; however, it has been described as a distinct salivary gland tumor. Its clinical characteristics remain nonspecific and therefore can be misdiagnosed. This report describes a 12-year-old patient who presented with a slow, progressive, painless, and deforming mass at the

Salivary duct carcinoma in the submandibular gland: A rare case report with differential diagnosis.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare and highly aggressive malignant salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for only 0.2% of salivary gland tumours. It predominantly affects the parotid gland and represents a significant concern with limited prevalence (1-1.2 individuals per million). We present a case of a 65-year-old female patient with a clinical history of swelling and pain in the right lower jaw region for six months. Diagnostic investigations revealed a well-defined submandibular gland lesion. Subsequent histopathological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the lesion to be SDC. T

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the parotid gland recurring 6 times within 12 years.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare neoplasm of low to intermediate malignant potential. It can occur in any location where follicular dendritic cells reside, and nearly all the cases reported in clinical notes have occurred as primary lymph node tumors. Carcinosarcoma or true malignant mixed tumor of the salivary gland is a tumor composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements. It is an exceedingly rare tumor of the salivary glands, and only approximately 60 clinical notes have been reported. In this report, we describe a recurrent carcinosarcoma of the parotid gland that cont

Partial Superficial Parotidectomy Versus Extracapsular Anatomical Dissection for the Treatment of Benign Parotid Tumors.

OBJECTIVES: Superficial benign parotid tumors are a common neoplasm of the salivary glands. Different surgical procedures have been applied for partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP) and extracapsular dissection (ECD), which are the two predominant surgical techniques. Our study aimed to evaluate PSP versus ECD for benign parotid tumors, in relation to post-operative complications and recurrence rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 266 patients who underwent parotidectomies of benign superficial parotid tumors were evaluated retrospectively. The first group (PSP group) was composed of 143 patients

Sebaceous Adenocarcinoma in Parotid Gland of a 65-Year-Old.

Sebaceous adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland is a rare, malignant epithelial neoplasm with focal areas of sebaceous differentiation. A literature search revealed only 34 cases as of December 2020. Our case brings this total to 35. It is characterized as a partially encapsulated neoplasm with predominant areas of basaloid or squamous cells, and variable degrees of sebaceous differentiation. The sebocytes display an immunohistochemical staining pattern of EMA (cytoplasmic vesicles), CD15, lactoferrin, GCDFP-2, and androgen receptor positivity in the sebocytes. Bimodal peaks occur in the third a

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Palate: A Detailed Case Report and Surgical Outcome.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for a significant proportion of both major and minor salivary gland tumors. While it most frequently arises in the parotid or submandibular glands, it can occasionally present as an intraoral mass over the palate or lip when originating from the minor salivary glands. A palatal pleomorphic adenoma typically presents as a painless, gradually enlarging mass on the posterior lateral aspect of the palate. This article discusses a case of a palatal pleomorphic adenoma, which was successfully managed with surgical excision.

A case of lipomatous pleomorphic adenoma in the parotid gland: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign neoplasm of the salivary glands. Extensive lipomatous involvement of the tumor is, however, a very rare finding. CASE REPORT: Herein, a rare case of lipomatous pleomorphic adenoma arising in the parotid gland of a 14-year-old Japanese woman is presented. CONCLUSION: This is the sixth case of lipomatous pleomorphic adenoma in the English literature. Recognition of this rare subtype of pleomorphic adenoma is important for clinical diagnosis and management. On CT scan, it may not be detected possibly due to the extensive fatty componen

MRI findings of papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the submandibular gland.

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma is an extremely rare malignant tumor of the salivary glands. Major locations of this neoplasm are the parotid gland, sublingual gland, and minor salivary glands, while occurrence in the submandibular gland is extremely rare. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of this lesion have not been reported in the literature. Herein, we present a case of papillary cystadenocarcinoma arising from the right submandibular gland. MRI showed a 5-cm mass composed of solid and cystic components in the mildly enlarged gland. Pathologic evaluation revealed papillary cystadenoca

Widespread cutaneous metastases from acinic cell carcinoma 20 years after primary presentation.

Acinic cell carcinoma is a rare, low-grade malignant salivary gland neoplasm. Approximately, 20% of patients experience local recurrence and 10% distant metastasis, often many years after initial presentation. We present a case of widespread cutaneous metastasis from acinic cell carcinoma arising in a 59-year-old woman with a history of acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland 20 years prior to her cutaneous disease. To our knowledge, is the first report of widespread cutaneous metastasis from acinic cell carcinoma.

Malignant melanomas of the parotid: comparison of survival for patients with metastases from known vs unknown primary tumor sites.

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma (MM) rarely affects the parotid, and usually this diagnosis will herald a search for a primary skin neoplasm. Occasionally, no primary tumor is ever found, raising questions regarding prognosis and the issue of primary melanoma of the parotid. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate retrospectively the clinical and histological features of MM involving the parotid in 19 patients. DATA SOURCES: Pathology and hospital files at 3 tertiary care university hospitals. Pleomorphic adenoma: Indeed, a versatile tumor.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common and well-studied salivary gland neoplasm. It is a benign tumor most commonly occurring in the parotid gland although it can be seen in other major and minor salivary glands. There is a variety of metaplasia seen in Pleomorphic adenoma most commonly squamous metaplasia, others noted are osseous metaplasia, oncocytic metaplasia, sebaceous metaplasia, and adipocytic metaplasia. Also, at times tyrosine crystalloids are seen. This study discusses a few of the metaplasia and the presence of tyrosine crystals in pleomorphic adenoma. Indeed, this tumor proves tru

Primary oncocytic carcinoma of ectopic salivary gland: a unique case.

Oncocytic carcinoma of the salivary glands is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm. The parotid is the most frequently involved salivary gland, but tumours in the submandibular gland and minor salivary glands have also been described. It appears that oncocytic carcinoma of an ectopic salivary gland has not been reported so far. The unique case of a 78-year-old male patient diagnosed with oncocytic adenocarcinoma of an ectopic salivary gland is reported here. The patient underwent surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy. The clinical, morphological, and immunohistochemical features of this rare entit

Coexistence of Lymphoepithelial Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland and Submandibular Gland Pleomorphic Adenoma.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma is a variant of undifferentiated carcinoma with characteristic dense lymphoid stroma in which nasopharynx is site of predilection. Racial and geographic association and Epstein-Barr virus positivity in endemic areas are other characteristics of this rare neoplasm. Lymphoepithelial carcinoma accounts for only 0.4% of malignant salivary gland tumors. The authors present a patient with Epstein-Barr virus positive lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland in a nonendemic region. Besides this, synchronous pleomorphic adenoma in the contralateral submandibular gland
