An investigation of the treatment of particulate matter from gasoline engine exhaust using non-thermal plasma.

A plasma reactor with catalysts was used to treat exhaust gas from a gasoline engine in order to decrease particulate matter (PM) emissions. The effect of non-thermal plasma (NTP) of the dielectric discharges on the removal of PM from the exhaust gas was investigated experimentally. The removal efficiency of PM was based on the concentration difference in PM for particle diameters ranging from 0.3 to 5.0 microm as measured by a particle counter. Several factors affecting PM conversion, including the density of plasma energy, reaction temperature, flow rate of exhaust gas, were investigated in …

Physicochemical characteristics and biological activities of seasonal atmospheric particulate matter sampling in two locations of Paris.

Fine particulate matter present in urban areas seems to be incriminated in respiratory disorders. The aim of this study was to relate physicochemical characteristics of PM2.5 (particulate matter collected with a 50% efficiency for particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 microm) to their biological activities toward a bronchial epithelial cell line 16-HBE. Two seasonal sampling campaigns of particles were realized, respectively, in a kerbside and an urban background station in Paris. Sampled-PM2.5 mainly consist of particles with a size below 1 microm and are mainly composed of soot as as…

A case-crossover analysis of particulate matter air pollution and out-of-hospital primary cardiac arrest.

Numerous epidemiologic studies have reported increases in the daily incidence of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity associated with increases in daily levels of particulate matter air pollution. We studied the association between the incidence of primary cardiac arrest and two daily measures of particulate matter using a case-crossover study of 362 cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. All cases were attended by paramedics and had no history of clinically recognized heart disease or life-threatening comorbidities. We compared particulate matter levels at index times with particulate mat…

Associations between Size-Specific Particulate Matter and Lung Function: Results from the China Pulmonary Health Study.

Emerging evidence suggests that the respiratory health effects of particulate matter (PM) may vary by aerodynamic diameter. However, comprehensive investigations comparing the effects of size-specific PM on lung function indicators remain limited. We analyzed lung function data from the China Pulmonary Health (CPH) Study to assess the associations between long-term exposure to PM1, PM1-2.5, PM2.5, PM2.5-10, and PM10 and indicators of large and small airway function using multivariable linear models. This study included 50,991 adults aged 20 years and above. For large airway function, each inte…

Superoxide Release from Macrophages upon Exposure to Secondary Organic Aerosols, Biomass, and Plastic Burning Particulate Matter.

Oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a key process for adverse health effects upon respiratory deposition of particulate matter (PM). Alveolar macrophages can release superoxide upon phagocytosis of PM through a process called the respiratory burst. The release of cellular ROS should depend on both PM composition and dose, but the dose-response relationship for various types of PM remains poorly quantified. Here we measure cellular superoxide production by macrophage cells exposed to secondary organic aerosols (SOA) derived from oxidation of limonene, toluene, and napht…

Mitigating traffic-related particulate matter with evergreen shrubs: A real-world field study in bergamo, Italy.

Urban bus stops are critical air pollution hotspots often overlooked in mitigation strategies. While large green spaces are studied, the impact of small-scale vegetation remains less clear. This research evaluated the role of common evergreen shrubs (Prunus laurocerasus and Pyracantha x 'Navaho') in reducing PM10 mass concentration. The study was conducted at a high-traffic bus stop in Bergamo, Northern Italy, during winter (January-February) and autumn (October) 2024, focusing on their potential to improve air quality in dense urban microenvironments. Results showed that the shrubs reduced PM

Assessment of particulate matter exposure levels and associated respiratory symptoms among oil seed processing factories workers.

Studies have shown that levels of fungal contamination and mycotoxin concentrations in oil-producing seeds vary across regions. In addition, extreme exposure to seeds dust particulate matter can lead to respiratory health problems. In Ethiopia oil-seeds processing factories workers exposure to particulate matter and magnitude of its respiratory symptoms have not been widely explored. To determine particulate matter concentration exposure levels and identify factors associated with respiratory symptoms among oil-seed processing factories workers. Using cross-sectional study design, 14 factories…

The complex effects of reduced mobile source emissions on submicron particulate matter concentrations in Los Angeles.

Despite considerable reductions in mobile source emissions, annual average aerosol concentrations measured in Los Angeles using Federal Reference Methods (FRM) have not appreciably declined over the last decade. Here, we use submicron aerosol measurements and zero-dimensional modeling to quantify the impacts of these emissions reductions on aerosol formation in Pasadena, CA during the late spring and summer of 2022. Reductions in secondary organic aerosol (SOA) concentrations expected from reduced mobile source emissions appear to have been largely offset by increases in hydroxyl radical conce

Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and its constituents, genetic susceptibility, and incident bipolar disorder.

To date, research on the relationship between long-term exposure to PM2.5 constituents and the risk of bipolar disorder (BD) remains underexplored. This study investigated this association using data from 495,139 participants in the UK Biobank. Daily average concentrations of PM2.5 constituents from 2006 to 2020 were estimated using the European Monitoring and Evaluation Program model applied to the UK (EMEP4UK). Time-weighted Cox proportional hazards models were employed to quantify the risk of BD associated with long-term exposure to PM2.5 and its constituents, while the Quantile g-computati

Particulate matter and co-occurring genetic risk induce oxidative stress and cardiac and brain Alzheimer's pathology.

Amyloid-beta (Aβ) aggregates, an Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathological hallmark, extend beyond the brain to the heart of heart failure (HF) and AD patients. Being diseases of the elderly, increased prevalence is expected as the population ages. However, changes in the incidence and prevalence of dementia over the past decades, and the independent association of exposure to air particulate matter (PM) with poor cognitive function, adverse cardiovascular effects, and oxidative stress hint to the contribution of other factors beyond senescence. Therefore we evaluate whether, and by which mechanis…

Gestational fine particulate matter exposure and perinatal outcomes in the ECHO cohort: Associations across pregnancy windows.

Evidence is inconsistent regarding which windows of PM2.5 exposure are critical for adverse perinatal outcomes. We investigated associations between timing of gestational PM2.5 exposure and perinatal outcomes. Participants included 19,108 mother-infant dyads from 51 sites of the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) cohort. Repeated measures of PM2.5 exposure were included based on high-resolution spatiotemporal models for trimesters 1-3, early first trimester (≤14 days), and late first trimester (70-92 days). We estimated associations of PM2.5 exposure (per 5 μg/m3 increase

Development of Control Methods for Submicron Particulate Matter Emissions and Inhalation Exposure from Cosmetic Spray Products.

Cosmetic spray products, widely used for personal care, are popular due to their ease of application and rapid, uniform coverage. However, the particulate matter (PM) that they emit can be inhaled and deposited in the respiratory tract, potentially posing respiratory health risks. Existing studies have seldom addressed emissions from cosmetic spray products applied directly to the human body, especially the face and neck, and few have proposed practical methods to reduce exposure. This study systematically evaluates the particle size distribution and number- and mass-based concentrations of 12…

Elucidating the changing particulate matter pollution and associated health effects in rural India during 2000-2019.

Atmospheric pollution is a serious problem in many countries, including India, and it is generally considered as an urban issue. To fill the knowledge gap about particulate pollution and its adverse health effects in rural India for well-informed region-specific policy interventions, we present new insights on the rural pollution of India in terms of PM2.5. Here, we analyse PM2.5 pollution and its associated health burden in rural India using satellite and reanalyses data for the period 2000-2019. We observe a gradual and consistent rise of atmospheric pollution in rural areas of India. The hi
