BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida septicemic septic shock without scratches in chronic alcohol abusers are rare and paucibacillar. Chronic legs ulcers could be predisposing factors. Three severe cases of such diseases with early multiple organ failure without endocarditis despite 3, 5 and 3 positive blood cultures respectively are reported.
CASE REPORTS: In all three cases, the source of septicemia was extensive skin legs ulcers contaminated by domestic cat saliva, probably. The underlying diseases were alcoholism, without cirrhosis (2 cases) and with cirrhosis (1 case). Aggravating factors w…

We cultured Pasteurella multocida from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of a 4-month-old infant who presented with meningitis. The patient had been scratched on the head by a cat. Culture of the cat's claws also yielded P. multocida. The isolates had identical biochemical patterns. Analysis of both strains by random amplification of polymorphic DNA and comparison of these strains with P. multocida strains isolated from other cats showed that the two strains were identical and completely different from the unrelated isolates. Our patient's meningitis most likely resulted from direct inoculation of…

The SDS-PAGE patterns of the outer membrane protein (OMP) extracts of Pasteurella multocida strain P1059, grown under iron-restricted, iron-replete and in vivo conditions, were examined. The results showed that the iron-regulated outer membrane proteins (IROMPs) with molecular masses of 76 kDa, 84 kDa, and 94 kDa were expressed by bacteria grown in iron-restricted media. They were also expressed by in vivo grown P. multocida. Convalescent-phase sera, obtained from turkeys which had survived pasteurellosis, contained antibodies that reacted intensly with th three IROMPs. This indicated that the…

Genomes may now be sequenced in a matter of weeks, leading to an influx of "hypothetical" proteins (HP) whose activities remain a mystery in GenBank. The information included inside these genes has quickly grown in prominence. Thus, we selected to look closely at the structure and function of an HP (AFF25514.1; 246 residues) from Pasteurella multocida (PM) subsp. multocida str. HN06. Possible insights into bacterial adaptation to new environments and metabolic changes might be gained by studying the functions of this protein. The PM HN06 2293 gene encodes an alkaline cytoplasmic protein with a…

BACKGROUND: Bacterial surface proteins play key roles in pathogenicity and often contribute to microbial adhesion and invasion. Pasteurella lipoprotein E (PlpE), a Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) surface protein, has recently been identified as a potential vaccine candidate. Live attenuated Salmonella strains have a number of potential advantages as vaccine vectors, including immunization with live vector can mimic natural infections by organisms, lead to the induction of mucosal, humoral, and cellular immune responses. In this study, a previously constructed recombinant attenuated Salmon…

Fowl cholera is a serious, highly contagious disease caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) in a range of avian species and is characterized by an acute form of septicaemia. The pathogenic mechanism of chicken lung injury caused by the bacterium is unclear. Therefore, P. multocida Q (a reference standard strain isolated from chicken) and 1G1 (a clinic isolated strain from duck) were selected to infect chickens, establishing fowl cholera-induced laying hen models. Several important proteins involved in the process of lung injury were identified and quantified using immunoh…

Danofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent approved for use in veterinary medicine to treat and control bovine respiratory disease caused by Mannheimia haemolytica or Pasteurella multocida. Susceptible minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) breakpoint (≤0.25 µg/mL) and disk diffusion interpretive criteria (≥22 mm) values for danofloxacin against M. haemolytica and P. multocida were first approved by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) in 2003. However, intermediate and resistant breakpoint values were not established because only susceptible wild-type populations …

In the present study, Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and Repetitive Extragenic Palindromic sequence-based Polymerase Chain Reaction (REP- PCR) were used to characterize 131 isolates of Pasteurella multocida, originating from different healthy and diseased animal species obtained from several geographical regions of Iran. The RAPD and REP-PCR generated amplified products in the range of 300 to 3400 bp and 200 to 2850 bp, respectively. Among all of the P. multocida isolates, cluster analysis revealed that 63 clusters and nine untypable isolates and 81 clusters and six untypable isolat…

Pasteurella multocida is a veterinary pathogen causing diseases with considerable economic repercussions in a wide range of animal hosts. In rabbits, P. multocida infections cause a variety of clinical manifestations including rhinitis, pneumonia, septicemia, abscesses, mastitis, and pyometra. In this study, 100 P. multocida isolates from different commercial rabbit farms located throughout the Iberian Peninsula were molecularly characterized by capsular typing, detection of four virulence-associated genes (tbpA, toxA, hgbB, and pfhA), and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Rabbit P. multocida…

Twenty two isolates of Pasteurella multocida were obtained from different tissues of dead birds and animals (cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goat) suspected of fowl cholera and haemorrhagic septicaemia. The isolates were confirmed as P. multocida by various biochemical tests and PM PCR. An attempt was made to standardize Loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) using newly designed primer sequences of KMT1 gene. Loop mediated isothermal amplification was conducted using 6 sets of primers at 65°C for 30 minutes and the result was confirmed by visual observation using SYBR green fluorescence dy…

Pasteurella multocida is a zoonotic pathogen infecting a wide range of domestic and wild animals. Although genomic data are available for several domestic hosts, isolates from wildlife remain underrepresented. Here, we performed whole-genome sequencing of nine P. multocida isolates recovered in Connecticut between 2022 and 2023 from cows, a deer, a rabbit, a cat, and a pheasant to characterize their genetic features and enhance our understanding of the host-associated diversity. All isolates except one feline strain shared a common genotype across multiple host species, being classified as cap…

Hemorrhagic septicemia (HS), caused by Pasteurella multocida serotype B:2, remains a major transboundary disease of cattle and buffalo, particularly in tropical regions. Efficient vaccine production requires high-density biomass generation under controlled and scalable fermentation conditions. This study designed as a sequential process-development and optimization study aimed to optimize industrial-scale cultivation of P. multocida B:2 using a 150-L bioreactor system with S1-S5 samples (n = 5) representing independent fermentation runs from analytical measurements through media selection, fed…

Pasteurella multocida is a major zoonotic pathogen causing fowl cholera and other animal-derived infectious diseases, posing significant threats to the poultry industry and public health. Rapidly identifying its host preference is critical for disease control and understanding cross-species transmission. This study collected genomic data of P. multocida from four key hosts (chicken, cat, pig, cattle) in the NCBI Pathogen Database, yielding 814 qualified strains. Phylogenetic analysis showed host-correlated branching: cat strains formed a distinct clade, while cattle, pig, and chicken strains c…

Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida are two bacterial species implicated in the bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) that is costly to the beef and dairy cattle industries. Both bacterial species are thought to occupy a similar niche as commensals in the upper respiratory tract. Many bacteria are thought to exist as biofilms in their hosts, perhaps in close proximity with other bacterial species. We previously showed that M. haemolytica forms biofilm on bovine respiratory epithelial cells in vitro. We are interested in the possibility that M. haemolytica and P. multocida co-e…

Recombinant outer membrane protein H (rOmpH) is a potential fowl cholera vaccine candidate. The present study was aimed at developing rOmpH formulations for intranasal administration. The rOmpH was purified and formulated with either Escherichia coli enterotoxin B (LTB) or CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) as an adjuvant. Antibody responses in chickens intranasally immunized with rOmpH in combination with 2 different adjuvants were significantly increased (P<0.05) post immunization. Chicken survival rates showed that rOmpH formulated with ODN and LTB elicited 90% and 70% protection, respectively
