[Patient satisfaction after posterior lamellar keratoplasty (DSAEK)].

BACKGROUND: The advantages of posterior lamellar keratoplasty (DSAEK) compared to conventional full thickness keratoplasty are faster visual rehabilitation, little change in astigmatism and the absence of suture-associated complications. The current study evaluated the satisfaction of the first 15 patients who underwent DSAEK at our clinic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Evaluation of patient satisfaction was conducted via a telephone survey and by means of a written patient questionnaire. The patients were asked to answer questions on a scale from 1 (very bad) to 10 (very good) about their overall s

[Post-traumatic dehiscence after corneal graft at the Ophthalmology Clinic of Aristide Le Dantec Hospital in Dakar].

Post-traumatic dehiscence is a rare condition often compromising the visual outcome of transplanted patients. It can occur after transfixing keratoplasty even after low-energy trauma. We here report two cases of patients with a history of keratoplasty, admitted to the hospital with painful red eye due to trauma. Patients' assessment objected decrease in visual acuity, subtotal graft displacement and major ocular hypotonia. After symptomatic medical treatment, they underwent surgical repair after 16 hours and 72 hours respectively. Visual prognosis was better in patient 2, who reported proper v

Contrast sensitivity after epikeratophakia.

Epikeratophakia is a rapidly evolving surgical procedure for the refractive correction of aphakia. Even when Snellen acuity after epikeratophakia is normal, patients often report a subjective degradation of the visual image through the surgically corrected eye. To further define visual performance in the patient with optically successful epikeratophakia, we examined contrast sensitivity in two patients surgically corrected for monocular aphakia. Contrast thresholds were measured over a range of spatial frequencies using both computer-generated sinusoidal gratings and a commercially available w

Visual acuity following treatment of bilateral congenital cataracts.

Several studies have indicated that operation during the first months of life in children with dense congenital cataract improves the final visual acuity. In the current study seven otherwise healthy children operated on before the age of fifty-six days are compared with seven children operated on after the age of three months. The patients were followed by a team consisting of a paediatric ophthalmologist, a contact lens optician and an orthoptist. They were treated with contact lenses, spectacles with near addition and occlusion therapy when needed. Visual acuity was initially tested with pr

[Determination of visual acuity using optokinetic nystagmus. A newly developed instrument based on Günther's principle].

The two most important methods used for objective determination of visual acuity are those of Ohm-von Romberg and Günther. A newly developed instrument based on Günther's principle is described which combines the advantages of both methods. Using a Leitz projector and a specially designed accessory unit, a constantly moving screen of dots measuring 64 X 64 cm is projected. The setting was standardized on the basis of 358 eyes with visual acuities ranging from finger counting to 1.0. The correlation between the measured distance (from screen to patient) at which an optokinetic nystagmus was jus
