Promoting Physical Activity and Peer Relationships in Adolescent Girls Through a Summer Program.

Peer interactions and influence affect adolescent physical activity (PA) and mental health. Social emotional learning (SEL) can be key to adolescent development and well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the ripple effects and preliminary effectiveness of EmpowerHER, an integrated PA and SEL pilot intervention, on changes in adolescent girls' PA levels and friendship networks during an 8-week summer care program. Adolescents (n=47, ages 10-14 years) wore accelerometers to measure PA and completed surveys on psychological distress, social connectedness, and friendship nominations at the start

Binge drinking among adolescents: role of temperament, family environment and peers.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescence is a development stage between childhood and adulthood, which involves the intense physical, mental, and social development of a person. Adolescents are at risk of engaging in risky behaviours, most notably the use of psychoactive substances, including binge drinking. Factors involving family, peers and individual differences may protect this age group from or put them at risk of abusing alcohol. The aim of the study was to describe the relation between temperament, family and peer factors, and the frequency of binge drinking among adolescents. METHODS: The survey was

Understanding recovery experiences and occupational support needs among substance use peer workers: a qualitative systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The USA is facing a substance use workforce crisis, due in part to a shortage of providers. Substance use peer workers (PWs) fill a critical gap in the care continuum and are a growing sector of the workforce. In their daily work of providing non-clinical services to highly vulnerable people who use drugs, PWs are repeatedly exposed to stress, trauma and loss, which can adversely affect their well-being and recovery. This review aims to synthesise available evidence on PWs' experiences working in the field, its impact on their recovery and their occupational support needs. METHO

Help-Seeking Among Early Adolescents Who Use Physical Peer Violence.

Despite accumulating research on help-seeking among violence victims, little is known about help-seeking among youth who use violence. In a racially and ethnically diverse sample of early adolescents (N = 2,676; 50.3% female; M age = 12.67), participants self-reported physical bullying, physical fighting, physical dating violence perpetration, and help-seeking intentions over the past year. T-test and one-way analysis of variance examined help-seeking by sex and race, respectively. Prevalence and comparisons of help-seeking across youth with and without any violence were examined. Youth who us

[Peer counseling for amputations : A somewhat different instrument in trauma surgery].

The abrupt onset of the situation after a traumatic amputation and the preparatory discussions following unsuccessful attempts to preserve limbs with necessary amputation require a high level of empathy, attention and well-founded information individually tailored to the affected individuals. Optimization of the treatment process can only be achieved by considering these aspects. The self-motivation and cooperation of the patient should be encouraged. To achieve this goal, the professions involved are less suitable for counseling due to a lack of personal experience, whereas so-called peers, as

Universal School-Based Substance Use Prevention Using Technology-Supported Cooperative Learning.

Substance use in adolescence is a significant public health issue, particularly in early-to-mid adolescence, which represents a window of risk in the etiology of substance abuse and dependence. Substance use during this development period often results from affiliation with deviant peers, who model, facilitate, and reinforce use. Existing school-based substance use prevention programs have historically aimed to build adolescent knowledge regarding the dangers of substance use and/or enhance peer refusal skills. Research finds that these programs have had some success in reducing substance use,

Service Engagement Among People Experiencing Homelessness and Mental Disorders: A Call for Person-centred Innovations.

In recent years, there has been increased support for the use of coercive policies to address the seemingly intractable problem of homelessness among people with mental disorders in North America. Although these policy approaches respond to a critical issue, rising rates of unsheltered homelessness, low service engagement and concerns about disruptive behaviors in public settings, they are unlikely on their own to be successful. To avoid coercive practices, there is an urgent need to consider alternative, person-centred approaches to promote service engagement among people experiencing homeles

Can behaviorally inhibited preschoolers make friends?

Preschoolers who display extremely inhibited behavior are at risk for the development of anxiety disorders. However, behavioral inhibition (BI) is a multifaceted characteristic. Some children with BI are fearful when confronted by unfamiliar adults, peers, and objects; others are fearful when separated from their parents. In the present study, we examined specific features of BI that predicted observed friendship formation among preschoolers who are behaviorally inhibited. We also examined whether teacher ratings of classroom behaviors predicted friendship formation. Sixty highly inhibited chi

Friend Emotional Support and Dynamics of Adolescent Socioemotional Problems.

Emotional support from friends is a crucial source of social support for adolescents, significantly influencing their psychological development. However, previous research has primarily focused on how this support correlates with general levels of socioemotional problems among adolescents, neglecting the significance of daily fluctuations in these problems. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between friend emotional support and both the average and dynamic indicators of daily emotional and peer problems in adolescents. These dynamic indicators include within-domain dynamics-

Entering the Classroom: Do Newcomers Experience More Peer Victimization than Their Established Peers?

Students changing classrooms or schools may face challenges from entering a new peer context without friends and standing out from the crowd as newcomers. Two studies examined whether newcomer status predicts peer victimization at school, exploring several potential moderating factors (e.g., social anxiety, immigrant background and having good friends in the classroom) (Study 1: n = 6,199; Mage=12.53) and whether being victimized as a newcomer varied based on the different reasons for mobility (e.g., parental dissolution, residential move, previous victimization, changing into a more suitable

Which reference groups matter for Taiwanese high school adolescent smoking? A card sorting study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence represents a pivotal period for the initiation of smoking behaviours. While family, peer and social groups serve as significant reference groups influencing adolescents' decision-making process, there remains a paucity of research that examines how diversified reference groups influence their smoking decisions. OBJECTIVE: The objective is to compare normative and informative influences given by different reference groups on adolescents' smoking decision-making. DESIGN: This study applied reference group theory and used the card sorting technique. Adolescents were pres

The Influence of Cognitive Appraisals on the Association between Callous-Unemotional Traits and Conduct Problems during Middle Childhood.

Existing research on callous-unemotional (CU) traits and conduct problems primarily focuses on the concurrent or unidirectional associations between these constructs (i.e., from CU traits to CP), with less attention given to their dynamic interplay during middle childhood. It is possible that socialization agents, such as peers, play a significant role in shaping the dynamic relation between CU traits and conduct problems early in development. Additionally, prior studies have shown that both CU traits and conduct problems are associated with poorer peer functioning. Considering the social info

Take-Home Naloxone and risk management from the perspective of people who survived an opioid overdose in Stockholm - An analysis informed by drug, set and setting.

BACKGROUND: Take-Home Naloxone (THN) programs were introduced in Sweden in 2018 - a country with one of the highest rates of overdose mortality in the EU and a severe stigmatisation of people who inject drugs. This qualitative study builds on the international research that has expanded a previously narrow and medical focus on overdose deaths. It uses Zinberg's framework to look beyond the role of the "drug" to include the attitudes and personality of the person ("set") and contextual factors ("setting"). This study explores the impacts of THN from the perspective of overdose survivors. METHO

The company you keep: The neglected role of affiliating with delinquent friends in the development of the cannabis-violence link.

A growing body of research suggests a potential role of cannabis use on aggressive behaviors. In literature on adolescents, the lack of consideration of important confounders, such as adolescent's affiliation with delinquent peers, limits the possibility to determine whether there might be a direct or indirect link between cannabis use and aggression. Therefore, we sought to examine the effect of delinquent peers on the association between cannabis use and violence. We re-analyzed data from 850 ninth graders who were followed from mid-adolescence to early adulthood. Generalized Estimations Equ
