BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate self-perceived competence and self-esteem of primary school children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Japan and compare to those of children with other chronic physical diseases and healthy controls.
METHODS: Data were collected from 227 children: ASD (N.=91), nephrotic syndrome (NS) (N.=52) and asthma (N.=84), using Children's Perceived Competence Scale (CPCS) in 2012-2014. The relative motion between the surface of an object and our fingers produces patterns of skin deformation such as stretch, indentation, and vibrations. In this study, we hypothesized that motion-induced vibrations are combined with other tactile cues for the discrimination of tactile speed. Specifically, we hypothesized that vibrations provide a critical cue to tactile speed on surfaces lacking individually detectable features like dots or ridges.
