Amplitude-mapping effects on speech intelligibility with unilateral and bilateral cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVE: A study was conducted examining the effects of amplitude-mapping adjustments on speech intelligibility with bilateral cochlear implant users, for both unilateral and bilateral device use. The main motivation for this study was the consideration that bilateral loudness summation may result in sounds becoming too loud if no adjustments are made to standard monaural amplitude-mapping functions (maps) when used bilaterally. In that case, reductions of the stimulation levels may be needed. The objective was to assess the impact of such adjustments on speech intelligibility in noise and i

Forward- and simultaneous-masked thresholds in bandlimited maskers in subjects with normal hearing and cochlear hearing loss.

Forward- and simultaneous-masked thresholds were measured at 0.5 and 2.0 kHz in bandpass maskers as a function of masker bandwidth and in a broadband masker with the goal of estimating psychophysical suppression. Suppression was operationally defined in two ways: (1) as a change in forward-masked threshold as a function of masker bandwidth, and (2) as a change in effective masker level with increased masker bandwidth, taking into account the nonlinear growth of forward masking. Subjects were younger adults with normal hearing and older adults with cochlear hearing loss. Thresholds decreased as

Frequency-resolution measurements with notched noises for clinical purposes.

Knowledge of the frequency resolving power of the pathological ear can be helpful for good hearing-aid prescription. In particular, the slope of the low-frequency edge of the auditory filter will determine the extent of upward spread of masking. The most precise method for measuring this filter is the "notched-noise" procedure developed in the early 1980s. However, at this moment, the notched-noise protocol is too time consuming for clinical use. In this paper we developed a protocol that is applicable in the clinic. In the first part of the study we investigated the minimum number of threshol

Masking of speech by amplitude-modulated noise.

The masking of speech by amplitude-modulated and unmodulated speech-spectrum noise has been evaluated by the measurement of monaural speech recognition in such noise on young and elderly subjects with normal-hearing and elderly hearing-impaired subjects with and without a hearing aid. Sinusoidal modulation with frequencies covering the range 2-100 Hz, as well as an irregular modulation generated by the sum of four sinusoids in random phase relation, was used. Modulation degrees were 100%, +/- 6 dB, and +/- 12 dB. Root mean-square sound pressure level was equal for modulated and unmodulated mas

The masked threshold to noise ratio in brainstem electric response audiometry: assessment of the conductive loss component by bone-conducted masking.

The aim of this study was to assess the conductive loss component (CLC) by brainstem electric response audiometry. A bone-conducted noise was used to mask out the response to a conventional air-conducted click stimulus. The difference between the levels of the click and the noise is defined as the masked threshold to noise ratio (MTNR). This MTNR was determined for 21 normal ears (MTNR = -13 +/- 5 dB). The increase in MTNR compared to this normative value is a measure of the CLC. For 10 ears with an artificially induced purely conductive loss, the increase in MTNR is in good agreement with the

Effects of contralateral masking on high-frequency bone-conduction thresholds.

The present study reports effects of contralateral masking on high-frequency threshold force levels in 28 normal-hearing subjects. High-frequency air- and bone-conduction thresholds were measured with a high-frequency auditory evaluation system using matched Koss HV/1A earphones and the Pracitronic KH 70/5 bone vibrator. Measurements were made for both unmasked and masked bone-conduction thresholds at the ipsilateral mastoid of the better ear. The contralateral masked condition was performed using 30-dB-SL 400-Hz narrow-band masking noise centered at frequency of test tone. The results demonst

Auditory temporal integration and the power function model.

The auditory temporal integration function was studied with the objective of improving both its quantitative description and the specification of its principle independent variable, stimulus duration. In Sec. I, temporal integration data from 20 studies were subjected to uniform analyses using standardized definitions of duration and two models of temporal integration. Analyses revealed that these data were best described by a power function model used in conjunction with a definition of duration, termed assigned duration, that de-emphasized the rise/fall portions of the stimuli. There was a s

A developmental, interactive activation model of the word superiority effect.

Parallel distributed processing (PDP) models of reading developed out of an appreciation of the role that context plays in letter and word perception. Adult readers can more accurately identify letters in a word than alone or in other random display contexts, a phenomenon known as the Word Superiority Effect (WSE). We examined the effects of orthographic context on the letter recognition skills of dyslexic children, comparing their performance to adults, and chronological- and reading-age matched groups. Consistent with previous studies, results showed adults better able to identify letters in

Modulation of cochlear tuning by low-frequency sound.

An intense, low-frequency tone (about 30 Hz) modulates the sensitivity of the inner ear to high-frequency stimulation. This modulation is correlated with the displacement of the basilar membrane. The findings suggest that the modulation may also affect cochlear tuning. We have investigated modulation of cochlear tuning by low-frequency sound in the guinea pig. Applying indirect methods of measurement (narrow-band analysis of compound action potentials and compound-action-potential tuning curves), the results suggest a shift of the excitation pattern along the basilar membrane towards higher-fr

Consequences of conductive auditory impairment for binaural hearing.

Studies of persons with conductive hearing loss have revealed substantial degradations in binaural hearing abilities. Described here is a model based on the hypothesis that this degradation is due to high levels of bone-conducted signals relative to air-conducted signals. The model makes quantitative predictions for the effects of conductive impairment on measurements of interaural discrimination. Qualitative predictions for binaural advantages in detection and speech intelligibility are also made by employing auxiliary models. Generally, available data are consistent with the models, although

Correlations between cochlear hair cell loss and shifts of masked and absolute behavioral auditory thresholds in the house mouse.

Masked and absolute behavioral auditory thresholds were measured in kanamycin-treated C3H mice with a significant damage or loss of outer hair cells (OHCs) near the cochlear base, and in 17--24-month-old NMRI mice with a significant loss of OHCs and inner hair cells (IHCs) in the basal region and of OHCs near the apex. A loss of IHCs is correlated with an increase in absolute thresholds. A moderate damage or loss of OHCs in a cochlear region had no effect on absolute thresholds but correlated with a decrease and other changes of characteristics of masked thresholds in the respective frequency

Decision dynamics of negative bias in subclinical depression during ambiguous facial emotion perception.

Individuals with depressive tendencies may categorize ambiguous facial expressions toward negative rather than happy endpoints, but the associated decision-process components remained unclear. The study examined whether the categorization shift was associated with differences in perceptual criterion, discrimination sensitivity, response dynamics, or diffusion-model parameters. Fifty-nine participants, comprising a depressive tendency group and a comparison group, categorized morphed Sad-Happy and Angry-Happy expressions presented in a 750-ms face/mask sequence or a 1500-ms face/no-mask sequenc

The effect of deep versus awake removal of the laryngeal mask airway on the incidence of emergence delirium in paediatric tonsillectomy: A randomised controlled trial.

Emergence delirium, characterised by inconsolable crying, perceptual disturbances and thrashing, occurs in young children during the recovery phase from general anaesthesia. Our aim was to determine whether timing of laryngeal mask airway removal (deeply anaesthetised versus awake) influenced the incidence of emergence delirium in children after tonsillectomy. A single-centre, randomised controlled trial was conducted at Albury Wodonga Health, a regional hospital in Australia. Included patients were two to seven years old, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification 1-

Gaps-in-noise (GIN©) test results in children with and without reading disabilities and phonological processing deficits.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the gaps-in-noise (GIN(©)) test could differentiate children with dyslexia and significant phonological awareness deficits from a group of children with normal reading skills. DESIGN: A prospective study of GIN test performance in two groups of children. Participants were administered routine audiological tests, a phonological processing test, and an auditory temporal resolution test (GIN test). Statistical testing was completed to determine if significant differences existed between groups on GIN test results and phonological processing measures, and to examine pot

Behaviors of cubic distortion product otoacoustic emissions evoked by amplitude modulated tones.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were measured using sinusoidal amplitude modulation (AM) tones. When one of the primary stimuli (f(1) or f(2), f(1) < f(2)) was amplitude modulated, a series of changes in the cubic difference tone (CDT) were observed. In the frequency domain, multiple sidebands were present around the CDT and their sizes grew with the modulation depth of the AM stimulus. In the time domain, the CDT showed different modulation patterns between two major signal conditions: the AM tone was used as the f(1) or the f(2). The CDT amplitude followed the AM tone when

Three stages and two systems of visual processing.

Three stages of visual processing determine how internal noise appears to an external observer: light adaptation, contrast gain control and a postsensory/decision stage. Dark noise occurs prior to adaptation, determines dark-adapted absolute thresholds and mimics stationary external noise. Sensory noise occurs after dark adaptation, determines contrast thresholds for sine gratings and similar stimuli, and mimics external noise that increases with mean luminance. Postsensory noise incorporates perceptual, decision and mnemonic processes. It occurs after contrast-gain control and mimics external

Motion perception of saccade-induced retinal translation.

Active visual perception relies on the ability to interpret correctly retinal motion signals induced either by moving objects viewed with static eyes or by stationary objects viewed with moving eyes. A motionless environment is not normally perceived as moving during saccadic eye movements. It is commonly believed that this phenomenon involves central oculomotor signals that inhibit intrasaccadic visual motion processing. The keystone of this extraretinal theory relies on experimental reports showing that physically stationary scenes displayed only during saccades, thus producing high retinal

Modern anti-Semitism and anti-Israeli attitudes.

Anti-Semitism is resurgent throughout much of the world. A new theoretical model of anti-Semitism is presented and tested in 3 experiments. The model proposes that mortality salience increases anti-Semitism and that anti-Semitism often manifests as hostility toward Israel. Study 1 showed that mortality salience led to greater levels of anti-Semitism and lowered support for Israel. This effect occurred only in a bogus pipeline condition, indicating that social desirability masks hostility toward Jews and Israel. Study 2 showed that mortality salience caused Israel, but no other country, to perc

Effect of an auditory static distractor on the perception of an auditory moving target.

It is known that listeners lose the ability to discriminate the direction of motion of a revolving sound (clockwise vs counterclockwise) beyond a critical velocity ["the upper limit (UL)"], likely due to degraded front-back discrimination. Little is known about how this ability is affected by simultaneously present distractor sounds, despite the real-life importance of tracking moving sounds in the presence of distractors. We hypothesized that the presence of a static distractor sound would impair the perception of moving target sounds and reduce the UL and show that this is indeed the case. A
