tDCS increases anxiety reactivity to intentional worry.

While considerable experimental research has examined the impact of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on a range of cognitive processes associated with emotional pathology, the impact of tDCS on worry has been comparatively neglected. Given that anxiety pathology is characterised by motivated engagement in worry, and that frontal tDCS has the capacity to enhance goal-oriented cognition, it is important to examine whether tDCS would increase or ameliorate the cognitive and emotional effects of worry. In the current study we examined how tDCS influenced the anxiety response to worry

Communication and Stress: Effects of Hope Evocation and Rumination Messages on Heart Rate, Anxiety, and Emotions After a Stressor.

How we cope with the many stressors that we encounter throughout our lives has implications for our well-being. By affecting how individuals appraise stressful events, communication can prolong or ameliorate physiological and emotional responses to stress. This study investigated the short-term effects of hope-inducing and rumination-inducing messages on heart rate, state anxiety, and emotions after a standardized, social-evaluative stressor. Continuous heart rate was monitored for 127 college students (64 female, 63 male) throughout an experiment that included a performance stressor and messa

Antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of amentoflavone isolated from Cnestis ferruginea in mice.

The root decoction of Cnestis ferruginea (CF) Vahl DC (Connaraceae) is used in traditional African medicine in the management of psychiatric disorders. This study presents the antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of amentoflavone (CF-2) isolated from the root extract of C. ferruginea. The antidepressant effect was studied using the forced swimming (FST) and tail suspension tests (TST) while the hole-board, elevated plus maze (EPM) and light/dark tests were used to evaluate the anxiolytic effect. Acute treatment with CF extract and amentoflavone significantly (p<0.001) reduced the duration of

Key predictors of postpartum depression and anxiety symptoms among mothers in Kilifi, Kenya: a machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND: The burden of maternal postpartum depression and anxiety is disproportionately high in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), yet the use of advanced analytical methods to capture the complex interplay of variables influencing these conditions remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To apply machine learning (ML) methods to predict depressive and anxiety symptoms in postpartum mothers and to identify key and actionable predictors. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1,995 biological mothers of singleton infants aged 0-6 months, using survey data collected between March 2023 and March 2024

Longitudinal study of mental health in an elite soccer club: Depression and anxiety symptoms across a competitive season.

In high-performance sports, recognition of mental health's significance is growing. However, due to a lack of comprehensive longitudinal studies, the time course and stability of athletes' mental health throughout a competitive season remains unclear. The present work aimed to address this gap by assessing depression and anxiety symptoms at four measurement points during a season using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Screener. The study involved N = 204 youth and professional soccer players (79 % male, Mage = 16.13, SDage = 4.17) of a

Quality of life and social support as key determinants of anxiety and depression in Myasthenia Gravis: evidence from a Chinese cohort.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disorder frequently accompanied by anxiety and depression, which aggravate disease burden. Evidence on the relationship between clinical characteristics and psychological symptoms in MG remains inconsistent. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 93 Chinese MG patients. Clinical and demographic data were collected, and anxiety and depression were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Associations were examined by correlation, chi-square tests, and logistic regression with false discovery rate (FDR)

Exploring Factors for Predicting Anxiety Disorders of the Elderly Living Alone in South Korea Using Interpretable Machine Learning: A Population-Based Study.

This epidemiological study aimed to develop an X-AI that could explain groups with a high anxiety disorder risk in old age. To achieve this objective, (1) this study explored the predictors of senile anxiety using base models and meta models. (2) This study presented decision tree visualization that could help psychiatric consultants and primary physicians easily interpret the path of predicting high-risk groups based on major predictors derived from final machine learning models with the best performance. This study analyzed 1558 elderly (695 males and 863 females) who were 60 years or older

Numbers (but not words) make math anxious individuals sweat: Physiological evidence.

The study aimed to determine the specificity of math anxiety by measuring physiological arousal to the presentation of numerical and non-numerical stimuli. It also investigated whether math and trait anxieties share similar behavioral and physiological manifestations. Fifty-two female university students performed an experimental task including simple or complex arithmetical equations and math-related or neutral words. Participants' electrodermal activity (skin conductance response) was monitored during the task. Math and trait anxieties were measured using common explicit questionnaires. Resu

Evaluation of the psychometric properties of two short forms of the social interaction anxiety scale and the social phobia scale.

The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and Social Phobia Scale are widely used measures of social anxiety. Using data from individuals with social anxiety disorder (n = 435) and nonanxious controls (n = 86), we assessed the psychometric properties of two independently developed short forms of these scales. Indices of convergent and discriminant validity, diagnostic specificity, sensitivity to treatment, and readability were examined. Comparisons of the two sets of short forms to each other and the original long forms were conducted. Both sets of scales demonstrated adequate internal consistency

Cognitive function associated with different diagnoses of anxiety disorders over the lifespan: Results from a Spanish representative sample.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests an association between anxiety disorders and worse cognitive function. However, this association may vary depending on the type of disorder and age. We analysed the association of panic attack, 12-month and lifetime panic disorder (PD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), with cognitive function in a representative sample of Spanish adults, and compared three age groups (18-49, 50-64, and 65+). METHODS: Some 4,582 participants were interviewed with an adapted CIDI interview. Unadjusted and adjusted linear regression models were calculated by age grou

Family history of alcohol dependence modulates functional neurophysiology in mood/anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: A family history (FH) of alcohol dependence (AD) not only increases the risk for AD, but is also associated with an increased risk for mood and anxiety disorders. However, it is unknown how a FH of AD affects neural substrates in patients with mood and anxiety disorders. In this study we examined the effects of an alcoholic FH on cognitive and emotional functions in these patients using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Method In a sample of non-alcoholic patients with depressive and/or anxiety disorders from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) neuro

Attenuated Access to Emotions in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

The Seeking Proxies for Internal States (SPIS) model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) posits that OCD is associated with attenuated access to internal states. Here we explored the implications of this model in the realm of emotions. Participants with OCD, anxiety disorders, and nonclinical control participants completed the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT), assessing two domains of emotional intelligence: Experiential emotional intelligence (EI), reflecting the ability to perceive and feel emotions accurately, and Strategic EI, reflecting the ability to understan

How do worry and clinical status impact working memory performance? An experimental investigation.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has suggested that worry is negatively associated with working memory performance. However, it is unclear whether these findings would replicate across different worry levels and in individuals with anxiety and depressive disorders (i.e. clinical statuses). METHOD: One-hundred-thirty-eight participants performed a two-block working memory task (150 trials per block). Based on participants` current clinical status, four groups were considered (generalised anxiety disorder group: n = 36; clinical group with another anxiety or mood disorders: n = 33; subclinical gro

Participation motivation and athletes' competitive anxiety, mediating role of psychological resilience and moderating role of sport commitment.

BACKGROUND: As competitive demands in sport increase, competitive anxiety has become an important concern for athletes. Such anxiety may interfere with athletes' performance during a specific competitive event and may also be associated with longer-term mental health difficulties. While existing research has focused on athletes' competitive anxiety, the understanding of its underlying psychological mechanisms remains insufficient. Based on the conservation of resources theory, this study intends to explore the relationship between participation motivation and athletes' competitive anxiety, wit
