Gliding mentoplasty: a new technique.

BACKGROUND: The goal of mentoplasty is to improve chin projection. Traditionally, this is accomplished by either mandibular osteotomy or all … from the surrounding tissue. Three 2-0 monofilament nylon sutures were placed in the submandibular periosteum and connected through the remaining muscle cuff to the periosteum. These key sutures allowed the submandibular region to slide forward, project the subcutaneous tissue and mentalis muscle, define the labiomental fold, and improve the pogonion projec …

Periosteal microvascular reorganization after tibial reaming and intramedullary nailing in rats.

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary reaming and nailing of long bones impairs the endosteal circulation, often causing necrosis of the inner region o … l reaming alone caused significant increases in overall blood vessel and capillary densities in the periosteum compared with those of the intact tibias. Implantation with a titanium nail resulted in firm embedding of the nail and caused changes in the periosteal vasculature similar to those after reaming alone. In contrast, implantation of a polyethylene nai …

A phenotypically restricted set of primary afferent nerve fibers innervate the bone versus skin: therapeutic opportunity for treating skeletal pain.

Although musculoskeletal pain is one of the most common causes of chronic pain and physical disability in both developing and developed coun … hat innervate the glabrous skin of the hindpaw as compared to the bone marrow, mineralized bone and periosteum of the femur. Whereas the skin is richly innervated by CGRP(+), SP(+), P(2)X(3)(+) and Mrgprd(+) sensory nerve fibers, the bone marrow, mineralized bone and periosteum receive a significant innervation by SP(+) and CGRP(+), but not Mrgprd(+) and P(2 …

Capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerve fibers contribute to the generation and maintenance of skeletal fracture pain.

Although skeletal pain can have a marked impact on a patient's functional status and quality of life, relatively little is known about the s … nsory nerve fibers, but not 200 kDa neurofilament H positive (NF200(+)) sensory nerve fibers in the periosteum. The periosteum is a thin, cellular and fibrous tissue that tightly adheres to the outer surface of all but the articulated surface of bone and appears to play a pivotal role in driving fracture pain. In animals treated with capsaicin, but not vehic …

Neural-dural transition at the medial anterior cranial base: an anatomical and histological study with clinical applications.

OBJECT: Few anatomical studies have been focused on the morphological features and microscopic anatomy of the transition from the intracrani … which consisted of an arachnoid membrane and a potential subarachnoid space as well as dura mater, periosteum, ethmoid bone, and associated layers of submucosa and mucosa of the paranasal air spaces. A subarachnoid space was identified around the olfactory nerves as they exited the neural foramina of the cribriform plates. The dura mater eventually thinned …

Multiple tuberous xanthomas diagnosed on fine-needle aspiration cytology - Report of a rare case.

Xanthomas are papulonodular skin lesions present in lipoprotein metabolism disorders, which result in cholesterol deposits in subcutaneous tissue, tendons, ligaments, periosteum, etc. A 28-year-old male presented with multiple soft-tissue swellings, prominently over joints. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) from multiple sites had similar appearance with foamy histocytes and giant cells. We describe an unusual case of tendinous and tuberous xanthoma diagnosed by cytology. Acquaintance with FNA cytology findings in xanthomas can help to avoid the need of surgical biopsy, as xanthomas can regress on …

[Cleft palate repair with bilateral buccal musculomucosal flaps].

OBJECTIVE: A method for cleft palate repair was used for the purpose of diminishing surgical interference with maxillary growth. METHOD: Sixteen cases of cleft palate were repaired with bilateral buccal musculomucosal flaps. RESULT: The operation results in all cases were satisfactory. CONCLUSION: It is concluded: 1. The method does not traumatize the periosteum of the hard palate, thus alleviating postoperative maxillary deformity; 2. The buccal musculomucosal flap is generally long enough to reach across the incisive foramen and maintain good blood circulation; 3. The method benefits reco…

Modified Periosteal Releasing Incision (MPRI) for Primary Closure: Visualization of the Mental Nerve.

Periodontal surgery often requires flap advancement for adequate coverage of the surgical site with tension-free primary closure essential for successful outcomes. Although the periosteal releasing incision is frequently performed, it may necessitate deeper or more incisions, which could result in consequences such as edema, bleeding, paresthesia, and discomfort for the patient. To address these issues, the modified periosteal releasing incision was proposed to minimize trauma into the submucosa. In this paper, we update the technique, emphasizing its application in visualizing the mental nerv

Bone regeneration: A message from clinical medicine and basic science.

Population aging is a global phenomenon and with it, the number of bone fractures increases due to higher incidences of osteoporosis. Bone f … ered to be in the bone marrow, it has been shown that they are also present in the growth plate and periosteum. More recently, distinct types of cells in the bone marrow, including bone marrow stromal cells, osteoblast progenitor cells, and osteoblasts, have been shown to participate in bone regeneration. Interestingly, the cellular plasticity of differentia …

A Neuroskeletal Atlas: Spatial Mapping and Contextualization of Axon Subtypes Innervating the Long Bones of C3H and B6 Mice.

Nerves in bone play well-established roles in pain and vasoregulation and have been associated with progression of skeletal disorders, inclu … ithin and around the full length of the femur and tibia in two strains of mice (B6 and C3H). In the periosteum, these maps were related to the surrounding musculature, including entheses and myotendinous attachments to bone. Three distinct patterns of periosteal innervation (termed type I, II, III) were defined at sites that are important for bone pain, bone …

Periosteal osteosarcoma of the calcaneum: a case report.

A 30-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of pain and swelling over the sole of her right foot. Plain radiograph showed a calcified mass in the heel pad, which appeared to be arising from the spur on inferior aspect of calcaneum. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion, hypointense on T1-weighted and hyperintense on T2-weighted images over the plantar aspect of the foot. Open biopsy of the mass was indicative of periosteal osteosarcoma, the variety that has never been reported in calcaneum. Below-knee amputation was done with no recurrence or distance metastasis seen at 24 months

Periosteal chondroma of the pediatric cervical spine.

Periosteal chondromas located in the spine are rare. The authors document an even more infrequent occurrence of a recurrent periosteal chondroma in the cervical spine of a 6-year-old boy. During the operation, a giant (>7 cm in diameter) periosteal chondroma with involvement of the C-5 and C-6 vertebral bodies was resected. The vertebral column was reconstructed with anterior-posterior instrumentation. The pathological examination revealed that the tumor consisted of chondroid tissue with typical chondrocytes, confirming the diagnosis of periosteal chondroma.

Radiologic study of endosteal, intracortical, and periosteal surfaces of hand bones in metabolic bone diseases.

In metabolic bone diseases, subtle abnormalities occur on the three surfaces of bone, the recognition of which is important for diagnosis, as well as in follow-up studies, to recognize progression or regression. These resorptive and formative changes are best studied in fine-detail hand radiographs under 6 to 8 times magnification by a relatively simple radiologic method (microradioscopy). The periosteal resorption of hyperparathyroidism is thus recognized earlier than by regular radiography, and intracortical resorption, not detectable by the naked eye, can be visualized. The latter is also s

[The modality of endoconnective ossification on cartilaginous substrate: observations on the long bones in the embryo].

The authors conducted a histologic study on the modalities of ossification of the "diaphyseal osseous ferrule" in embryos between the sixth and eighth week of intrauterine life: the ossification of this "diaphyseal osseous ferrule" presents some peculiarities compared to that of other areas: it occurs with the modalities of periosteal ossification, exploiting, however, a cartilagenous substrate. In addition, the authors compared the ossification of the diaphyseal ferrule to that of the "perichondrial ferrule of the layer of ossification", examining histologic sections of embryos in the 25th we
