Tuberculous peritonitis is one of the most common causes of exudative ascites, especially in the young, and is an important cause of extra-pulmonary disease. However, tuberculous peritonitis is challenging to diagnose because there are no pathognomonic clinical features or imaging findings. Therefore, it is commonly misdiagnosed as another type of peritoneal disease, especially so in elderly patients with malignant disease. In this report, we described two cases of tuberculous peritonitis that were observed after intestinal perforation in elderly patients with malignancies. These diagnoses wer…

Background. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) rarely results in diffuse ascites. Severe adhesive disease secondary to PID may lead to the formation of inclusion cysts and even pelvic peritoneal nodularity due to postinflammatory scarring and cause an elevation of serum CA-125 levels. The constellation of these findings may mimic an ovarian neoplasm. Case. We report a case of a 22-year-old female who presented with multiple pelvic cysts and diffuse ascites due to Chlamydia trachomatis infection. The initial gynecologic exam did not reveal obvious evidence of PID; however, a positive Chlamydia t

Vernix caseosa peritonitis is a rare complication caused by inflammatory response to amniotic fluid spilled into the maternal peritoneal cavity. Most cases occur after cesarean section. We discuss herein two patients, aged 33 and 29 years, who presented with vernix caseosa peritonitis seven to nine days after a cesarean delivery. Laparotomy was performed and it revealed neither uterine rupture nor other surgical emergencies, but cheesy exudates on the serosal surface of all viscera. Appendicectomy was performed. Histopathologic study revealed acute fibrinous serositis and a mixed cellular infi…

Q fever has rarely been reported and can be difficult to diagnose, especially in immunocompromised patients. In the present report, we describe an unusual case of Q fever that presented as peritonitis and was treated with long-term combination therapy with doxycycline, ciprofloxacin and rifampicin for five weeks in a patient who had been on peritoneal dialysis for six years due to hypertensive nephropathy.

Midgut volvulus can rarely present with acute chylous peritonitis. Common etiologies for chylous ascites need to be excluded before this diagnosis is made. Correction of the volvulus and peritoneal lavage suffice as treatment.

The cirrhotic patients are at increased risk of infection greater than patients with other chronic diseases, due to differences in inflammatory and immune reactions. In cirrhotic patients with ascites, you must pay close attention to the prevention of complications such as hyponatremia, hepatorenal syndrome and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis SBP.The hospital mortality after an episode of SBP is 12-15% in the elderly, less than 10% in adults. Over 70% of patients with SBP belong to Class C Child-Pugh. Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, the most common infection in cirrhosis, is characterized…

This report presents two cases of young males who developed the rare idiopathic form of sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) presented as partial bowel obstruction, both diagnosed during surgical treatment, with satisfactory outcomes. Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis is a rare and enigmatic condition, characterized by intraperitoneal fibrosclerosis, which causes intestinal obstruction. It is a chronic entity with a poorly elucidated pathophysiology, leading to the constitution of a thick white nacreous fibrosis membrane that wraps the bowel in a concertina-like fashion with some adhe…

Patients with cirrhosis present an increased susceptibility to bacterial infections, which are the cause of hospital admission in about 10% of patients and are present in about 40% of those admitted for ongoing complications. Lastly, about a third of patients develop nosocomial infections. Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is the most frequent infection in advanced cirrhosis; it is mostly caused by Gram-negative bacteria of intestinal origin, but Gram-positive cocci can be involved in nosocomial-acquired SBP. Its occurrence is associated with complications, such as renal and circulatory …

Vibrio fluvialis is a Gram-negative, oxidase-producing, halophilic bacterium that, as a pathogen, has been implicated mainly as a cause of gastroenteritis. We describe a case of V. fluvialis peritonitis after a traffic accident that is, to our knowledge, the 1st report of non-continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis-related acute peritonitis caused by this organism.

Peritonitis is the most common complication in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Brucellosis is a rare cause of bacterial peritonitis. Only 1 case was reported of a patient with brucella peritonitis during CAPD therapy. In that case, CAPD peritonitis was accompanied by acute brucellosis. We present the case of a patient with isolated brucella peritonitis receiving CAPD therapy without systemic manifestations of brucellosis who works as a farmer. Results of a serum agglutination test and blood cultures were negative; however, the patient's peritoneal fluid ag…

BACKGROUND: Cystic teratoma is an unusual cause of postabortal pelvic peritonitis.
CASE: A healthy 22-year-old woman underwent outpatient first-trimester vacuum pregnancy termination, followed by a 3-day course of oral doxycycline. On the thirteenth day after pregnancy termination, she presented with fever, an acute abdomen, and pelvic pain. The woman underwent re-aspiration of her uterus, which yielded scanty tissue. She then underwent pelvic ultrasound and computerized tomogram, both of which revealed a posterior pelvic mass, presumed to be an abscess. After 5 days of broad-spectrum antibio…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Early prognostic evaluation of abdominal sepsis is useful in the assessment of the severity of the disease and to select high-risk patients for early surgical reintervention. The aim of this study was to identify prognostic factors in a well-defined patient population most likely to benefit from early reoperation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 66 consecutive patients with secondary peritonitis caused by gastrointestinal tract perforation and requiring postoperative treatment in an intensive care unit was performed using univariate and multivariate analys…

We report the case of a 66-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus and disseminated lupus treated with immunosupressive drug. She was admitted for an inflammatory oedema of the right lower limb associated to diffuse abdominal pain and vomiting. The occurrence of septic shock with multiple organ failure and surgical abdominal picture led us to perform urgent laparotomy without taking in account the evolutive signs of cutaneous lesions i.e. purpuric elements and haemorrhagic phlycthena. The abdominal cavity exploration showed peritonitis without digestive tracts perforation. The patient died few h…

The authors have done a biliary retrospective analysis of 10 deceased patients with a diagnosis of biliary peritonitis (BP). It is reported that the patients who died of BP are 9.5% of all who died of diffuse purulent peritonitis. All deceased patients were advanced and well advanced in years with prolonged complaints--in over 50% of them over 5 years. The complications set in 50% of the cases are recorded in the postoperative period. The perforation of the gallbladder and the biliopancreatitis are in the second place. Intrabiliary fistulas with 4 patients and 1 with a vesicocolon fistula; tum…
