Researchers and practicing clinicians are paying growing attention to adolescents showing signs of disharmonious personality development. Although the study of personality pathology in adolescence remains a debated area both domestically and internationally, timely and appropriate diagnostics can form the basis for adequate therapy. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Alternative Model for …

Personality maturation through sense of mastery? Longitudinal evidence from two education-to-work transition studies.

OBJECTIVE: Why personality changes in young adulthood remains a critical theoretical and empirical question. We studied personality change during the education-to-work transition, including mean-level personality change and its specific timing, the degree of individual variability in change, and the link between sense of mastery and personality change. METHODS: We used two intensive longitudinal studies. Study 1 included 5 waves of data across 2 years during the university-to-work transition (N = 309; mean-aged 25). Study 2 included 3 waves of data across 8 months during an internship-heavy t

Level of Personality Functioning in Adolescence: Psychological and Biological Aspects in the Context of Diagnosis and Therapy Adolescence is a crucial developmental phase in which identity, interpersonal relationships, and emotional regulation are further shaped and consolidated. These processes build upon early attachment experiences. At the same time, there is an increased vulnerability to personality disorders (PD), which are influenced by genetic and environmental factors such as abuse, neglect, and insecure attachment patterns. These factors can trigger neurobiological changes, including

Alcohol sipping patterns, personality, and psychopathology in Children: Moderating effects of dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) activation.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol, the most consumed drug in the United States, is associated with various psychological disorders and abnormal personality traits. Despite extensive research on adolescent alcohol consumption, the impact of early alcohol sipping patterns on changes in personality and mental health over time remains unclear. There is also limited information on the latent trajectory of early alcohol sipping, beginning as young as 9-10 years old. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) is crucial for cognitive control and response inhibition. However, the role of the dACC remains unclear i

Childhood obsessive-compulsive personality traits in adult women with eating disorders: defining a broader eating disorder phenotype.

OBJECTIVE: The authors retrospectively examined a spectrum of childhood traits that reflect obsessive-compulsive personality in adult women with eating disorders and assessed the predictive value of the traits for the development of eating disorders. METHOD: In a case-control design, 44 women with anorexia nervosa, 28 women with bulimia nervosa, and 28 healthy female comparison subjects were assessed with an interview instrument that asked them to recall whether they had experienced various types of childhood behavior suggesting traits associated with obsessive-compulsive personality. The sub

Lifelong eccentricity and social isolation. II: Asperger's syndrome or schizoid personality disorder?

Several scales are described for measuring aspects of eccentricity and social isolation; in particular, for assessing schizoid and schizotypal personality and for rating abnormal non-verbal expression. The latter is shown to be reliable, and the former to have a measure of validity. There was an association between schizoid personality traits and abnormalities of speech and non-verbal expression. However, abnormal non-verbal expression, but not schizoid personality traits or DSM-III schizotypal personality disorder, was particularly likely to occur in those subjects who had evidence of neurolo

The personality of clinical types: an empirically derived taxonomy.

Studied the development of a theory of multivariate personality styles that are considered to correspond to the character of specific diagnostic types. Theoretical descriptions of the personality styles of the hysteric, compulsive, character disorder, manic, and depressive were operationalized by predicting specific combinations of personality dimensions measured by previously validated personality measures. A test battery composed of scales hypothesized to operationalize these characteristics was administered to samples of male and female college students (N = 95). A short scale, the Multivar

Job characteristics and personality change in young adulthood: A 12-year longitudinal study and replication.

OBJECTIVE: Personality changes are related to successfully performing adult occupational roles which require teamwork, duty, and managing stress. However, it is unclear how personality development relates to specific job characteristics that vary across occupations. METHOD: We investigated whether 151 objective job characteristics, derived from the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), were associated with personality levels and changes in a 12-year longitudinal sample followed over the school to work transition. Using cross-validated regularized modeling, we combined two Icelandic longit…

Personality Disorder Diagnoses in ICD-11: Transforming Conceptualisations and Practice.

BACKGROUND: Until the advent of the ICD-11, classification of personality disorders was based on categorical prototypes with a long history. These prototypes, whilst familiar, were not based in the science of personality. Prototypical classifications were also complex to administer in non-specialist settings requiring knowledge of many signs and symptoms. METHOD: This article introduces the new structure of ICD-11 for personality disorders, describing the different severity levels and trait domain specifiers. Case studies illustrate the main aspects of the classification. RESULTS: The new IC

The Relations between Narrative Identity and Personality Pathology among Clinical Adolescents: Findings from a Multi-Ethnic Asian Sample.

Adolescence is a period where personality difficulties can start emerging. At the same time, a great deal of development in narrative identity takes place. Given that identity impairments are a key feature in personality pathology, it is useful to understand how pathological traits and narrative identity features are related. The current study addressed this by linking pathological personality trait domains to narrative identity features in clinically-referred Singaporean adolescents. Participants (n = 118, Mage = 16.82) wrote narratives about a turning point in their lives. These narratives w
