The role of psychiatric disorders in predicting drug dependence treatment outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has demonstrated that psychiatric disorders are common among people who abuse alcohol and drugs, but few studies have examined the relationship of psychiatric disorders to drug treatment outcome. The authors conducted such an examination. METHOD: They successfully reinterviewed 401 drug-dependent subjects (94% of the baseline in-treatment sample) and determined their drug abuse status at follow-up 12 months later. RESULTS: Analyses indicated that several baseline psychiatric disorders predicted worse outcomes at follow-up. Major depression predicted using a large

Vagal Paragangliomas: From Reducing Morbidity to Improving Quality of Life.

BACKGROUND: Decades ago, alopecia areata (AA) was regarded as a well-known example of psychosomatic disease. The poor development of measurement methods and criteria for the classification of psychiatric disorders at that time was probably partly to blame for the lack of methodologic validity of some studies. METHODS: We studied a random sample of 32 patients with AA (patchy form). Sociodemographic, dermatologic, and psychiatric variables were collected. Psychiatric examination was carried out by standardized interviews: Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN), Internation

Crossed hand-eye dominance in male psychiatric patients.

Increased incidence of left-eye and crossed hand-eye dominance have been considered as indicating left hemispheric dysfunction in many neuropsychiatric disorders. This study investigates the incidence of left-eye and crossed hand-eye dominance in patience with schizophrenia (n = 68), panic disorder (n = 62), personality disorder (n = 35), heroin addiction (n = 54), and mental retardation (n = 33), in comparison with controls (n = 944). All psychiatric groups, except the group with panic disorder, had significantly greater frequency of left-eye dominance than the control group. Furthermore, all

Prevalence of psychiatric disorders among incarcerated women. II. Convicted felons entering prison.

BACKGROUND: No unbiased estimates of the rates of psychiatric disorder among women prison inmates are available. Nonetheless, available data suggest that some psychiatric disorders are prevalent in this population. The objective of the study was to determine the rates, risk factors, and outcomes of specific psychiatric disorders among women prison inmates. METHODS: A virtual census of women felons (N = 805) entering prison in North Carolina was assessed using in-person interviews. Assessments were conducted for 8 disorders, using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview as the primary

Emotional Verbal Learning Test: development and psychometric properties.

Memory deficits are a common feature of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Measures designed to evaluate memory in clinical populations have distinguished between memory for verbal and visual information; however, few tests assess the recall and recognition of emotional information, despite evidence suggesting that brain regions are differentially involved in memory for emotional and neutral stimuli and that affective disturbances are common in psychiatric and neurological disorders. The present study reports the test development and psychometric properties of the Emotional Verbal Learnin

AIDS and the geriatrician.

Ten percent of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) cases are in persons over 50 years of age with 25% of these cases in persons over 60, and 4% in persons over 70 years of age. If the present age distribution holds, there will be 27,000 AIDS cases in persons over 50, and 1100 cases in persons over 70 years of age, by 1991. Older persons are more likely to acquire AIDS through blood transfusions than to homosexual exposure or drug abuse. Changes in the management of blood products will benefit older persons. The nearly 1 million elderly homosexual men, who have been sheltered from the vi

Relationship Between Palpitation and Mental Health.

BACKGROUND: 'Palpitation' is one of the most common complaints in patients referring to cardiologists. In modern medicine era, these patients suffer from much distress and some cases are known to be difficult to treat. Although the clinician's first duty is obviously to search for an organic basis for this symptom, the diagnostic evaluation is frequently unrevealing. However, clinical experience suggests that psychiatric causes are relatively common. OBJECTIVES: This research aimed to screen for mental disorders in patients complaining of palpitation and healthy persons in order to perform a

A multitrait-multimethod analysis of the MCMI-II clinical syndrome scales.

Multitrait-multimethod procedures and factor analyses were utilized to assess convergent/discriminant validity of the revised version of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-II) clinical syndrome scales and effects of item overlap on scale performance. Except for the Delusional Disorder Scale (PP), convergent validity was supported, but poor discriminant validity was found for the Alcohol Dependence (B) scale, Drug Dependence (T) scale, and Scale PP. Item overlap did not influence performance for many scales. In fact, results indicate that some scales, such as Bipolar:Manic (N), may

Psychiatric and medical comorbidities of bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: This review summarizes the literature on psychiatric and medical comorbidities in bipolar disorder. The coexistence of other Axis I disorders with bipolar disorder complicates psychiatric diagnosis and treatment. Conversely, symptom overlap in DSM-IV diagnoses hinders definition and recognition of true comorbidity. Psychiatric comorbidity is often associated with earlier onset of bipolar symptoms, more severe course, poorer treatment compliance, and worse outcomes related to suicide and other complications. Medical comorbidity may be exacerbated or caused by pharmacotherapy of bipo

Psychiatric Comorbidity in Bariatric Surgery: A Retrospective Study in a General Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Candidates for bariatric surgery undergo a multidisciplinary evaluation in the pre-operative phase, including a psychiatric visit aimed at the screening for psychiatric comorbidities, including feeding and eating disorders (FEDs), which are shortcomings to the intervention or predictors of worse prognosis. The presence of FEDs, such as Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN), is associated with higher rates of other psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, there is evidence of the association between obesity and Depressive Disorders, as well as B and C Cluster Personality D

Personality and schizophrenia: psychobiological model and its relationship with comorbidity.

Personality interacts with psychosocial variables, psychopathology and coping strategies of patients with schizophrenia. Psychobiological model of personality is important for schizophrenia as temperament dimensions, except dimension Persistence, have been associated with different neurotransmitter systems. Comorbidity of psychiatric and somatic disorders and syndromes is generally associated with dimensions high Harm avoidance and low Self-directedness. Variations in other dimensions may also be important. High Harm Avoidance may represent state vulnerability marker for various psychiatric di

Evidence of new-onset depression among persons with migraine after discontinuing antidepressants.

Antidepressants have been hypothesized to cause tardive dysphoria-the delayed development of negative emotional symptoms. We assessed the risk of tardive dysphoria in a cohort of persons with migraine taking anti-migraine antidepressants with no known diagnosis of any mood or anxiety disorder. We included all outpatient encounters in a university hospital system for migraine from January 2008 through October 2018, excluding subjects with prior psychiatric diagnoses. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses were conducted. 13,048 subjects were included; 1

Clinical utility of the DSM-5 alternative model of personality disorders: six cases from practice.

In Section III, Emerging Measures and Models, DSM-5 presents an Alternative Model of Personality Disorders, which is an empirically based model of personality pathology measured with the Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS) and the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5). These novel instruments assess level of personality impairment and pathological traits. Objective. A number of studies have supported the psychometric qualities of the LPFS and the PID-5, but the utility of these instruments in clinical assessment and treatment has not been extensively evaluated. The goal of this stu

Personality disorder symptoms are differentially related to divorce frequency.

Divorce is associated with a multitude of outcomes related to health and well-being. Data from a representative community sample (N = 1,241) of St. Louis residents (ages 55-64) were used to examine associations between personality pathology and divorce in late midlife. Symptoms of the 10 DSM-IV personality disorders were assessed with the Structured Interview for DSM-IV Personality and the Multisource Assessment of Personality Pathology (both self and informant versions). Multiple regression analyses showed Paranoid and Histrionic personality disorder symptoms to be consistently and positively
