Cost analysis of returned medicines at the outpatient pharmacy of a Malaysian state hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Returning unused medications to pharmacies is encouraged to reduce environmental pollution and safety hazards. However, this practice can impose financial losses on public health providers due to wasted drug supplies. This study aimed to quantify the costs of returned medicines at a Malaysian state hospital outpatient pharmacy and to characterise the returned items by therapeutic class and procurement category. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prevalence-based, bottom-up cost-analysis study of all solid medicines at the outpatient pharmacy of Hospital Tuanku Fauziah from May to…

Qualitative analysis of a hands-on activity for urinary incontinence in a pharmacy therapeutics course.

INTRODUCTION: Absorbent products for urinary incontinence (UI) are accessible in community pharmacies and commonly used in the hospital and long-term care settings. Little has been reported on how use of these products is taught in pharmacy schools. The objective of this study was to analyze the self-reported impact of a hands-on learning activity featuring UI absorbent products. METHODS: Students in a clinical therapeutics course were asked to use UI absorbent products outside the classroom and submit a written reflection. Three investigators reviewed the reflections and developed a codebook…

Interpretation of the ambulatory glucose profile in diabetes: practical application in community pharmacy.

INTRODUCTION: The ambulatory glucose profile summarizes continuous glucose monitoring data and complements glycated hemoglobin by providing metrics of exposure, variability, and time spent in different glucose ranges. OBJECTIVE: To review the key elements of the ambulatory glucose profile and propose a practical interpretation sequence applicable to community pharmacy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A targeted narrative review of PubMed/MEDLINE-indexed literature and scientific society recommendations was performed and complemented with official Spanish guidance, with the search updated through Augus

Academic pharmacy must do better to accommodate its faculty workforce.

This commentary follows an insightful paper recently published on the current milieu in academic pharmacy. The paper was unique in that it reported the results of in-depth interviews of persons with previously well-established, successful careers as pharmacy faculty who left the academy for various alternative paths. The commentary reflects on that paper along with other current literatures and trends in academic pharmacy and the broader context of academia, particularly the evolving work environments for faculty. We argue that evolutions in the work of pharmacy academicians have been witness

Before the Waters Rise: Building the Levee for Competency-Based Pharmacy Education.

Pharmacy education stands on unstable ground; overloaded curricula, eroding professional identity, and widening gaps between training and practice signal a system under pressure. Though other health professions are moving toward coordinated, competency-based transformation, pharmacy education risks falling behind. Drawing on recent stakeholder-informed studies and international precedents in medical and veterinary education, this commentary proposes Competency-Based Pharmacy Education (CBPE) not as reform but as essential infrastructure, a levee that must be constructed before pharmacy educati

Optimising pharmacy processes in medication delivery service through digitalisation and automation.

The rapid expansion of medication delivery service (MDS) during COVID-19 created many new roles in the pharmacy which are manpower intensive and not sustainable as pharmacy resumes counter collection services. To keep MDS operations sustainable, we identified the need to streamline and automate processes which are manual and repetitive. We seek to determine if the Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycles would effectively reduce the man-hours required for the MDS over two phases in 1 year. Phase 1 involved digitalisation of order taking and automation of the data entry process. Phase 2 involved auto

Choose your own adventure: Perception of gamification in continuing pharmacy education.

BACKGROUND: Literature detailing the implementation of gamification strategies, including 'choose your own adventure' (CYOA) patient cases, in continuing professional development within the pharmacy profession is limited. CYOA-style activities have had positive impacts on student cohorts. This report details attendees' perceptions of a continuing pharmacy education presentation at a national pharmacy conference that utilized gamification for content delivery. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY: An educational session was developed to use gamification to teach important concepts in the management of asthma.

A Call for Clarity: A Proposed Toolkit to Integrate Foundational Sciences into Pharmacy Curricula.

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Pharmacotherapy Didactic Curriculum Toolkit has been used across many schools of pharmacy to guide the depth and breadth of therapeutics coverage, but no counterpart for foundational science coverage in pharmacy education currently exists. Broad topic areas for the foundational sciences are outlined in Appendix 1 of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) standards, but the standards lack specific direction with regard to foundational sciences content needed in the professional pharmacy curriculum. Faculty are therefore challenge

Harnessing the ocean's pharmacy: marine bioactive compounds as next-generation therapeutics.

The ocean's vast and diverse ecosystem offers a rich reservoir of bioactive compounds with immense clinical potential. Marine organisms produce structurally unique and biologically active compounds, leading to breakthroughs in therapeutic development. Notable examples include anticancer agents like trabectedin and cytarabine, and the analgesic ziconotide. Marine compounds also exhibit potent antimicrobial and antiviral properties, addressing critical challenges like antibiotic resistance and emerging viral infections. Despite the promise, challenges such as sustainable harvesting and complex e

The misuse of codeine containing medicines: Perceptions and behaviours of qualified pharmacy professionals.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacy professionals working in community pharmacies frequently provide pharmacist-initiated therapy, including codeine-containing medicines. Codeine is an opioid with great potential for misuse, adding to the global opioid epidemic burden. Professional pharmacy personnel are the first intervention point in relation to management of codeine use. This study highlights the importance of pharmacy professionals' perceptions and behaviours in combatting the opioid epidemic. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. Dispensing pharmacy chains and direct anticoagulants: Potential associations with patient outcomes.

PURPOSE: Pharmacy chains can differ with respect to the characteristics of their patient populations as well as their nonprescription products, services, and practices, and thus may serve as a surrogate for potential unmeasured confounding in observational studies of prescription drugs. This study evaluates whether a single-source drug can have different patient outcomes based on the dispensing pharmacy chain. METHODS: Separate analyses for two anticoagulant drugs, rivaroxaban and apixaban, were conducted using Medicare Fee-for-Service claims evaluating the association between dispensing phar
