We report a case of a 5-year-old female, resident of Afghanistan, who presented with fever and massive splenomegaly. Bone marrow revealed Leishmania donovani bodies (LD bodies) in macrophages characterized by a kinetoplast and characteristic double dot appearance. She was diagnosed as visceral leishmaniasis which is transmitted by sandflies (Phlebotomus).

To determine whether sandfly fever Sicilian virus (SFSV) is present in Algeria, we tested sandflies for phlebovirus RNA. A sequence closely related to that of SFSV was detected in a Phlebotomus ariasi sandfly. Of 60 human serum samples, 3 contained immunoglobulin G against SFSV. These data suggest SFSV is present in Algeria.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous and visceral forms of leishmaniasis are the most important protozoan infection in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
OBJECTIVES: Review the current knowledge on leishmaniasis in the MENA.
METHODS: The data presented in this review are gathered primarily from WHO reports and from an extensive literature search on PubMed.
RESULTS: There are four cycles of transmission of leishmaniasis: zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL), induce by Leishmania (L.) major, transmitted by Phlebotomus (P.) papatasi, with rodent species of Psammomys obesus, Meriones libycus, Nesokia …

This paper presents the results of an entomological survey in an endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Cukurova region of Turkey. A total of 8,927 specimens belonging to eight Phlebotomus and two Sergentomyia species were captured with sticky papers and CDC light traps from 52 stations. Phlebotomus tobbi Adler, was found to be the most abundant species. Sand fly activity started in May and ended in October. Abundance was highest in August. According to the frequency distributions among certain temperature intervals the observed number of individuals was significantly different from t…

Twenty-five strains of Leishmania donovani isolated from humans and Phlebotomus orientalis in an epidemic area of southern Sudan were shown to belong to 3 very similar zymodemes: MON 18 (11 strains), MON 30 (1 strain) and MON 82 (13 strains). The 3 zymodemes are very closely related and seem to behave as a single population.

The American skin and mucous membrane leishmaniasis or mucocutaneous leishmaniasis is induced through phlebotomus bites and occurs in South and Central America. Untreated severe multilating ulcerations of the face with involvement of oral, nasal, and pharyngeal mucous membranes may occur. Therapy consists of intramuscular administration of three- or pentavalent antimon preparations. In failure-patients amphotericin B is used instead.

Viruses from the Phlebovirus genus (family Bunyaviridae) are arboviruses that can be transmitted to humans by mosquitoes (Rift Valey virus) or by sandflies. In phleboviruses group we can find the etiological agents for Sandfly Fever (SF) that is spread in the Mediterranean basin, Middle East, Pakistan and India. In Portugal, the importance of phleboviruses to the Public Health is recognized because there have been detected cases of Toscana virus infection wich is responsible for severe cases of SF that involve encephalitis/meningitis. On the other hand, Phlebotomus perniciosus, one of Toscana …

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), caused predominantly by Leishmania donovani and transmitted by both Phlebotomus orientalis and Phlebotomus martini, is highly endemic in East Africa where approximately 30 thousands VL cases are reported annually. The largest numbers of cases are found in Sudan - where Phlebotomus orientalis proliferate in Acacia forests especially on Sudan's eastern border with Ethiopia, followed by South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and Uganda. Long-standing civil war and unrest is a dominant determinant of VL in East African countries. Here we attempt to identify …

Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania transmitted by insects of the genus Lutzomyia sp. or Phlebotomus sp. The main syndromes are cutaneous leishmaniasis, mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis. This article reviews kidney involvement in cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, highlighting the aspects of their pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, histopathological findings, outcome and treatment.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), which is caused by the protozoa Leishmania donovani and transmitted by the bite of the female sand fly Phlebotomus argentipes, is common in Bihar, India. Wilson disease is an autosomal recessive disorder of copper metabolism in which copper is deposited in the brain and liver. We report a case of an extremely uncommon combination of these diseases in a patient. Treatment options for such a combination of diseases are limited and difficult.
