A Generalized Encoding System for Alpha Oscillations Through Visual Saliency Analysis.

By learning how the brain reacts to external visual stimuli and examining possible triggered brain statuses, we conduct a systematic study on an encoding problem that estimates ongoing EEG dynamics from visual information. A novel generalized system is proposed to encode the alpha oscillations modulated during video viewing by employing the visual saliency involved in the presented natural video stimuli. Focusing on the parietal and occipital lobes, the encoding effects at different alpha frequency bins and brain locations are examined by a real-valued genetic algorithm (GA), and possible link

Hidden in the Dark: Dim Ambient Lighting Increases Game Play Duration and Total Spend.

It has been suggested that much like commercial environments (e.g., retailing), the situational characteristics of gambling environments form an important determinant of gambling behavior. However, no research has examined whether ambient lighting in gaming venues can have unintended consequences in terms of gambling behavior. The results of three experimental laboratory studies show that game play duration and total spend increase when ambient lighting is dim (vs. bright). Process evidence suggests that this phenomenon occurs as ambient lighting influences risk-taking, which in turn increases

Oscillatory signatures of Repetition Suppression and Novelty Detection reveal altered induced visual responses in early deafness.

The ability to differentiate between repeated and novel events represents a fundamental property of the visual system. Neural responses are typically reduced upon stimulus repetition, a phenomenon called Repetition Suppression (RS). On the contrary, following a novel visual stimulus, the neural response is generally enhanced, a phenomenon referred to as Novelty Detection (ND). Here, we aimed to investigate the impact of early deafness on the oscillatory signatures of RS and ND brain responses. To this aim, electrophysiological data were acquired in early deaf and hearing control individuals du

Priming of Attentional Selection in Macaque Visual Cortex: Feature-Based Facilitation and Location-Based Inhibition of Return.

Visual search performance varies with stimulus and response history. Priming of pop-out refers to increased accuracy and reduced response time with repeated presentation of particular singleton and distractor features (e.g., a red target among green distractor stimuli), which are abruptly impaired when singleton and distractor features swap (e.g., green target among red distractors). Meanwhile, inhibition of return refers to the slowing of response time when target location repeats. Neurophysiological correlates of both these phenomena have been reported in the frontal eye field (FEF), an area

Aging Affects Fine and Coarse Coding of Orientation Information in Macaque Primary Visual Cortex.

Human visual function degrades with age. Previous studies of visual perception have shown that aged people have worse performance in the coding of orientation information. However, the neuronal mechanism still remains elusive. In this study, we performed in vivo extracellular single-unit recording in the primary visual cortex of senescent and young monkeys, and we used the Chernoff distance to quantify the encoded information of neurons for fine and coarse orientation difference. Our results showed that the Chernoff distance for fine orientation difference in senescent monkeys is significantly

Rapid spatial oculomotor updating across saccades is malleable.

The oculomotor system uses a sophisticated updating mechanism to adjust for large retinal displacements which occur with every saccade. Previous studies have shown that updating operates rapidly and starts before saccade is initiated. Here we used saccade adaptation to alter life-long expectations about how a saccade changes the location of an object on the retina. Participants made a sequence of one horizontal and one vertical saccade and ignored an irrelevant distractor. The time-course of oculomotor updating was estimated using saccade curvature of the vertical saccade, relative to the dist

Electoretinographic evidence of retinal ganglion cell-dependent function in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a complex disorder that is diagnosed mainly with clinical observation and evaluation. Recent studies suggest that many people with schizophrenia have abnormalities in the function of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR). The retina is part of the central nervous system and expresses the NMDAR, raising the possibility of the early detection of NMDAR-related schizophrenia by detecting differences in retinal function. As a first-step, we used two non-invasive outpatient tests of retinal function, the photopic negative response (PhNR) of the light-adapted flash-electroretinog

A Brief History of the Encoding of Hand Position by the Cerebral Cortex: Implications for Motor Control and Cognition.

Encoding hand position by the cerebral cortex is essential not only for the neural representation of the body image but also for different actions based on eye-hand coordination. These include reaching for visual objects as well as complex movement sequences, such as tea-making, tool use, and object construction, among many others. All these functions depend on a continuous refreshing of the hand position representation, relying on both predictive signaling and afferent information. The hand position influence on neural activity in the parietofrontal system, together with eye position signals,

[Functional examinations of visual channels: clinical aspects].

The review discusses literature data on the clinical relevance of functional assessment of magno- (M), parvo- (P), and koniocellular (K) pathways. It also covers the differential contribution of the M, P, and K channels to visual impairments and how it determines the prognosis, early diagnosis, and treatment choice in patients with neurodegenerative diseases of the retina and brain. Selective changes in the performance of the visual channels are investigated by the example of glaucoma and optic neuritis in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. A detailed analysis of pattern electroretinogram and v

Possible role of biochemiluminescent photons for lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD)-induced phosphenes and visual hallucinations.

Today, there is an increased interest in research on lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) because it may offer new opportunities in psychotherapy under controlled settings. The more we know about how a drug works in the brain, the more opportunities there will be to exploit it in medicine. Here, based on our previously published papers and investigations, we suggest that LSD-induced visual hallucinations/phosphenes may be due to the transient enhancement of bioluminescent photons in the early retinotopic visual system in blind as well as healthy people.

Correlated activity of cortical neurons survives extensive removal of feedforward sensory input.

A fundamental property of brain function is that the spiking activity of cortical neurons is variable and that some of this variability is correlated between neurons. Correlated activity not due to the stimulus arises from shared input but the neuronal circuit mechanisms that result in these noise correlations are not fully understood. Here we tested in the visual system if correlated variability in mid-level area V4 of visual cortex is altered following extensive lesions of primary visual cortex (V1). To this end we recorded longitudinally the neuronal correlations in area V4 of two behaving

The independent detection of motion energy and counterchange: flexibility in motion detection.

Motion perception is determined by changing patterns of neural activation initiated by spatiotemporal changes in stimulus features. Motion specified by 1st-order motion energy entails neural patterns that are initiated by spatiotemporal changes in luminance, whereas motion specified by counterchange entails oppositely signed changes in neural activation that can be initiated by spatiotemporal changes in any feature. A constraint in furthering this distinction is that motion energy and counterchange are co-specified by most visual stimuli. In the current study, counterchange was isolated for st

Can itch-related visual stimuli alone provoke a scratch response in healthy individuals?

BACKGROUND: The sensation of itch and the scratch response elicited by application of histamine are enhanced by itch-related visual cues in people with existing skin conditions and, to a lesser extent, in healthy controls. OBJECTIVES: We tested whether visual cues alone could generate feelings of itch and provoke a scratch response in healthy volunteers. A secondary aim was to assess whether the content of some pictures evoked these sensations more effectively. METHODS: Thirty participants viewed static images that were either itch-related (e.g. ants, fleas or skin conditions) or neutral (e.

Keeping your head on target.

The mechanisms by which the human brain controls eye movements are reasonably well understood, but those for the head less so. Here, we show that the mechanisms for keeping the head aimed at a stationary target follow strategies similar to those for holding the eyes steady on stationary targets. Specifically, we applied the neural integrator hypothesis that originally was developed for holding the eyes still in eccentric gaze positions to describe how the head is held still when turned toward an eccentric target. We found that normal humans make head movements consistent with the neural integr

A simple strategy for detecting moving objects during locomotion revealed by animal-robot interactions.

An important role of visual systems is to detect nearby predators, prey, and potential mates, which may be distinguished in part by their motion. When an animal is at rest, an object moving in any direction may easily be detected by motion-sensitive visual circuits. During locomotion, however, this strategy is compromised because the observer must detect a moving object within the pattern of optic flow created by its own motion through the stationary background. However, objects that move creating back-to-front (regressive) motion may be unambiguously distinguished from stationary objects beca

Measures of anxiety in zebrafish (Danio rerio): dissociation of black/white preference and novel tank test.

The effects of wall color stimuli on diving, and the effects of depth stimuli on scototaxis, were assessed in zebrafish. Three groups of fish were confined to a black, a white, or a transparent tank, and tested for depth preference. Two groups of fish were confined to a deep or a shallow tank, and tested for black-white preference. As predicted, fish preferred the deep half of a split-tank over the shallow half, and preferred the black half of a black/white tank over the white half. Results indicated that the tank wall color significantly affected depth preference, with the transparent tank pr

Subjectively interpreted shape dimensions as privileged and orthogonal axes in mental shape space.

The shape of an object is fundamental in object recognition but it is still an open issue to what extent shape differences are perceived analytically (i.e., by the dimensional structure of the shapes) or holistically (i.e., by the overall similarity of the shapes). The dimensional structure of a stimulus is available in a primary stage of processing for separable dimensions, although it can also be derived cognitively from a perceived stimulus consisting of integral dimensions. Contrary to most experimental paradigms, the present study asked participants explicitly to analyze shapes according

The effects of dissociation on information processing for analogue trauma and neutral stimuli: a laboratory study.

This study investigated the effects of high and low levels of dissociation on information processing for analogue trauma and neutral stimuli. Fifty-four undergraduate females who reported high and low levels of trait dissociation were presented with two films, one depicting traumatic events, the other containing neutral material. Participants completed a divided attention task (yielding a proxy measure of attention), as well as explicit memory (free-recall) and implicit memory (word-stem completion) tasks for both films. Results indicated that the high DES group showed less attention and had p

Biological "bar codes" in human faces.

The structure of the human face allows it to signal a wide range of useful information about a person's gender, identity, mood, etc. We show empirically that facial identity information is conveyed largely via mechanisms tuned to horizontal visual structure. Specifically observers perform substantially better at identifying faces that have been filtered to contain just horizontal information compared to any other orientation band. We then show, computationally, that horizontal structures within faces have an unusual tendency to fall into vertically co-aligned clusters compared with images of n
