Objective: Chronic physical illness affects not only patients but also their partners. Dyadic coping (DC)-the ways couples cope in dealing with a stressor such as chronic illness-has received increased attention over the last three decades. The aim of the current study was to summarize the state of research on DC in couples with chronic physical illnesses. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods studies published between 1990 and 2020, assessing DC in couples affected by severe physical illnesses. We used DC and related search terms for the lit

The accurate determination of cell cycle, immunophenotypes and morphology at single-cell level is not fully achieved by current flow cytometry protocols. Acetone, a coagulant fixative/permealizing agent, is widely used in static cytometry, but is impractical in flow cytometry because of its shrinking effect. We sought for conditions of acetone treatment that could permit the simultaneous analysis of physical parameters, surface and intracellular immunostaining, and DNA content. We evaluated different experimental conditions (concentration, duration of fixation, temperature, presence of protein

Physical restraint persists at high rates in human services settings supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), even within organizations that have formally adopted positive behavior support (PBS) frameworks and invested substantially in staff training. This perspective article introduces the Staff Decision Ecology Model, a decision ecology account of physical restraint, which conceptualizes restraint as a context-dependent, staff-mediated decision shaped by nested individual, environmental, and organizational variables, and argues that leadership functions

The growth of the elderly population worldwide is posing significant challenges to human society. The progressive physical and physiological changes occur with aging, including decreased appetite, incomplete digestion, and reduced absorption of nutrients. A common feature of many elderly people's diets is a deficiency in proteins (especially easily digestible ones) and micronutrients (e.g., vitamins, zinc, iron, and calcium). One of the solutions to this problem is the incorporation of these components into suitably texture-modified foods. There is a dearth of products that meet the needs of t

Conscious Action Theory extends quantum theory to macroscopic phenomena and suggests physical correlates of consciousness occur at the intersection of external measurement signals and internally generated signals from memories that model the outside world. This physical theory predicts conscious phenomena happen at all scales and differ only by the size and complexity of material organizations involved. At the scale of the human "Brain" consciousness is predicted to happen where the processing loop of activity in the Glial network interfaces with the real world input-output processing loop of

Sudden-onset vestibular dysfunction in the canine is a commonly seen condition in veterinary practice, with some veterinarians reporting several cases each month. However, traditional veterinary medicine has little to offer these patients other than symptomatic relief for the severe nausea that accompanies the vertigo and supportive advice for the owners. Owners of affected dogs are informed that these symptoms usually resolve within a few days. As physical therapists, we often see cases of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in our human practice clinics, and effective protocols for diagnosi

Estimates suggest that so far in 2021, about two children have died each week at Al Hol camp in northeast Syria. Current evidence states that more than 90% of children are under the age of 12, and that they face circumstances contrasting with severely restricted freedoms and human rights violations. They do not have access to clean water or adequate food. Recent examples of violence and fears of a massive outbreak of COVID-19 only increase the suffering. In this context, the global debate discusses exposure to these conditions and their psychological and physical effects on children's well-bei

(1) Background: Cardiovascular diseases, in particular, myocardial infarction (MI), are the main threats to human health in modern times. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR), and especially increased physical activity, significantly prevent the consequences of MI. The aim of this study was to assess physical performance in patients after MI before and after CR. (2) Methods: 126 patients after MI were examined. They were admitted to the cardiac rehabilitation ward twice: in the 3rd month after MI, and then in the 6th month after the last rehabilitation session. CR lasted 20 treatment days (4 weeks with

The role of Nature **** in supporting human life, health, and well-being has been recognized and appreciated since ancient times, and has become a topic of scientific investigation with early studies dating back several decades. In recent years, this field has gained renewed attention and methodological refinement, driven by interdisciplinary frameworks and advances in environmental psychology, ecology, and health sciences, including new ecosystem-based approaches that highlight the deep human dependence on Nature for both mental and physical health. Among Nature-based Interventions that aim a

Human microphysiological systems, such as organs on chips, are an emerging technology for modeling human physiology in a preclinical setting to understand the mechanism of action of drugs, to evaluate the efficacy of treatment options for human disease and impairment, and to assess drug toxicity. By using human cells co-cultured in three-dimensional constructs, organ chips can provide greater fidelity to the human cellular condition than their two-dimensional predecessors. However, with the rise of SARS-CoV-2 and the global COVID-19 pandemic, it became clear that many microphysiological system

This randomized controlled trial examined whether repeated-sprint training (RST) performed on sand or grass induces different adaptations in collegiate soccer players. Forty-two male players were randomly assigned to a sand-RST group (SAND, n = 14), a grass-RST group (GRASS, n = 14), or a control group (CON, n = 14). SAND and GRASS performed repeated-sprint training during two scheduled training sessions per week for six weeks, whereas CON completed standard technical soccer training of equivalent duration during the same two weekly sessions. All groups continued the same regular team training

PURPOSE: Increased total hemoglobin (Hb) mass is a physiological adaptation to altitude training; however, considerable individual differences have been observed in this response. This study aimed to determine the relationship between changes in total Hb mass (Hbmass) and conditioning indices during altitude training at an elevation of 1700 m.
METHODS: Sixteen male long-distance runners participated in an altitude training camp at 1700 m for 9 to 23 days. The Hbmass was determined using a carbon monoxide rebreathing method. Daily conditioning indices, including arterial oxygen saturation (SpO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the within-athlete sensitivity, validity, and dose-response relationships of exercise heart rate (HRex) from a submaximal fitness test (SMFT) as a proxy measure of cardiorespiratory fitness.
METHODS: This study follows an observational, repeated-measures design. Twenty-five trained female football players' training loads (GPS and HR metrics) were collected throughout an 8-week preseason period. A 4-minute continuous-fixed SMFT protocol was administered weekly to evaluate HRex. A running time-trial assessment was conducted in weeks 2 and 8 to calculate mean velocity (5-min

Sports injuries pose significant challenges in athlete welfare and team dynamics, particularly in high-intensity sports like soccer. This study used machine learning algorithms to assess non-contact injury risk in professional male soccer players from physiological and mechanical load variables. Twenty-five professional male soccer players with a first-time, non-contact muscle injury were included in this study. Recordings of external load (speed, distance, and acceleration/deceleration data) and internal load (heart rate) were obtained during all training sessions and official matches over a

Eccentric training proved to be effective in hamstring injury prevention; however, little is known about effects of eccentric hamstring training at long muscle length on hamstring flexibility. Hence, the aim was to evaluate the effect of eccentric training at long muscle lengths on flexibility and passive properties of the hamstring muscles. 34 physically active young adults were randomized to either the control or intervention group (6 weeks of eccentric hamstring training at long muscle length; control group resumed with their usual activities). Maximal passive hip flexion range of motion (R

This study assessed the influence of training load, exposure to match play and sleep duration on two daily wellbeing measures in youth athletes. Forty-eight youth athletes (age 17.3 ± 0.5 years) completed a daily wellbeing questionnaire (DWB), the Perceived Recovery Status scale (PRS), and provided details on the previous day's training loads (TL) and self-reported sleep duration (sleep) every day for 13 weeks (n = 2727). Linear mixed models assessed the effect of TL, exposure to match play and sleep on DWB and PRS. An increase in TL had a most likely small effect on muscle soreness (d = -0.43

High impact exercise can reduce postmenopausal bone loss, however stimulus frequency (loading cycles per second) can affect osteogenesis. We aimed to examine the effect of stimulus frequency on the mechanical loading of four common osteoporosis prevention exercises, measuring body acceleration and muscle activation with accelerometry and electromyography (EMG), respectively. Fourteen early postmenopausal women completed randomised countermovement jumps (CMJ), box-drops (BD), heel-drops (HD) and stamp (STP) exercises for continuous and intermittent stimulus frequencies. Sacrum accelerometry and
