Low-frequency tone pips elicit exaggerated startle reflexes in C57BL/6J mice with hearing loss.

The strength of the acoustic startle reflex (ASR) as a function of age was studied in adult C57BL/6J and CBA/CaJ mice, because altered ASR levels are a potential behavioral consequence of the neural reorganization that accompanies the early-onset hearing loss of the C57BL, in contrast to the normal-hearing CBA. For C57BL mice at 14-36 weeks of age, compared with 7-week-old mice, high-frequency thresholds measured with the auditory brainstem response (ABR) were less sensitive by about 25-30 dB while the hearing loss at low frequencies was 10-15 dB, but by 60 weeks losses of 45-50 dB were presen

The effect of pure-tone forward masking on overshoot.

The overshoot effect can be reduced by temporary hearing loss induced by aspirin or exposure to intense sound. The present study simulated a hearing loss at 4.0 kHz via pure-tone forward masking and examined the effect of the simulation on threshold for a 10-ms, 4.0-kHz signal presented 1 ms after the onset of a 400-ms, broadband noise masker whose spectrum level was 20 dB SPL. Masker frequency was 3.6, 4.0, or 4.2 kHz, and masker level was 80 dB SPL. Subject-dependent delays were determined such that 10 or 20 dB of masking at 4.0 kHz was produced. In general, the pure-tone forward masker did

Synergistic interactions of gentamicin and pure tones causing cochlear hair cell loss in pigmented guinea pigs.

The effects of single and repeated combinations of gentamicin and sound on Preyer reflex and cochlear hair cells in pigmented guinea pigs have been examined. Gentamicin at 50 mg/kg for 10 days and an 8 kHz pure tone (116 dB for 60 min) cause little or no hair cell loss when given alone. In combination, hair cell loss occurs with the gentamicin and sound acting synergistically. If the pure tone is given on the first of a 10-day gentamicin course there is considerable loss of hair cells in the basal coil; if given on the 10th day the loss is several times less. Repeating the treatments after 3 w

Perceiving depth beyond sight: Evaluating intrinsic and learned cues via a proof of concept sensory substitution method in the visually impaired and sighted.

This study explores spatial perception of depth by employing a novel proof of concept sensory substitution algorithm. The algorithm taps into existing cognitive scaffolds such as language and cross modal correspondences by naming objects in the scene while representing their elevation and depth by manipulation of the auditory properties for each axis. While the representation of verticality utilized a previously tested correspondence with pitch, the representation of depth employed an ecologically inspired manipulation, based on the loss of gain and filtration of higher frequency sounds over d

Univariate and multivariate analyses of functional networks in absolute pitch.

Absolute pitch (AP) refers to the rare ability to identify the pitch of any given tone without an external reference tone. Previous studies have shown that during auditory processing, AP musicians activate the auditory cortex (AC), the prefrontal cortex (PFC), and parietal areas of the brain. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that AP is sustained by a widespread functional network. In the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we tested this hypothesis by employing a mass-univariate analysis of resting-state functional connectivity within the AC, the PFC, and parietal ar

Distortion product otoacoustic emission contralateral suppression functions obtained with ramped stimuli.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the changes that occur in human distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) level functions over continuous frequency bands in response to activation of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system by contralateral broadband noise. DPOAEs were obtained using continuous upward ramps of the lower frequency tone (f(1)) while the higher frequency tone (f(2)) was fixed. These ramps were designed to change the stimulus frequency ratio f(2)/f(1) over a fixed range for each fixed f(2) value of 2, 3, and 4 kHz. Contralateral noise was presented on a

Visual and auditory temporal processing and early reading development.

This study investigated the ability of temporal processing measures obtained before school entry to predict early reading development in an unselected sample of 125 children (68 males, 57 females). Visual and auditory temporal order judgement (TOJ) tasks measured at Preschool (mean age 5.36 years) significantly predicted letter and word identification (accuracy) and reading rate (fluency) in early Grade 1 (mean age 5.94 years), even after the effects of age, environment, memory, attention, nonverbal ability, and speech/language problems were accounted for. There were no significant differences

Evoked-response forward-masking functions in chinchillas with noise-induced permanent hearing loss.

Evoked-response forward-masking functions were measured by chronic electrodes in the inferior colliculus of the chinchilla before and after exposure to an intense tone that produced a permanent hearing loss. Before exposure, the forward-masking time constants ranged from 50 to 90 ms. After exposure, the forward-masking time constants increased significantly in the region of hearing loss, but not in regions where hearing was normal. The effect of the hearing loss on the time course of forward masking was most pronounced once the hearing loss exceeded 20-25 dB. These physiological changes in the

The Personality Profile of Tinnitus Sufferers and a Nontinnitus Control Group.

BACKGROUND: Chronic tinnitus (phantom perception of sound) significantly disrupts quality of life in 15-20% of those who experience it. Understanding how certain personality traits impact tinnitus perception and distress can be beneficial for the development of interventions to improve the lives of tinnitus sufferers. PURPOSE: Four key self-reported personality traits (social closeness, stress reaction, alienation, and self-control) were identified from previous research as being associated with tinnitus. These were compared between tinnitus and age-, gender-, and hearing level-matched nontin

A review of the history, development and application of auditory weighting functions in humans and marine mammals.

This document reviews the history, development, and use of auditory weighting functions for noise impact assessment in humans and marine mammals. Advances from the modern era of electroacoustics, psychophysical studies of loudness, and other related hearing studies are reviewed with respect to the development and application of human auditory weighting functions, particularly A-weighting. The use of auditory weighting functions to assess the effects of environmental noise on humans-such as hearing damage-risk criteria-are presented, as well as lower-level effects such as annoyance and masking.

Baclofen reduces tone-evoked activity of cochlear nucleus neurons.

Recent evidence suggests that an excitant amino acid may be a neurotransmitter at acoustic nerve synapses in cochlear nucleus (CN). Release of excitant amino acids is reportedly reduced by baclofen, a lipophilic GABA-mimetic used to treat the spasticity of multiple sclerosis and spinal injury. Microiontophoresis of (-)baclofen suppressed spontaneous and tone-evoked activity in CN neurons. GABA inhibited the responses of most neurons responsive to (-)baclofen. However, iontophoresis of these two substances onto the same CN neuron resulted in dramatic differences in time course to maximum effect

Effects of age and hearing impairment on the ability to benefit from temporal and spectral modulation.

OBJECTIVES: At poor signal-to-noise ratios, speech understanding may depend on the ability to combine speech fragments that are distributed across time and frequency. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of development and hearing impairment on this ability. DESIGN: Listeners in the present study included adults and children with normal hearing and with hearing impairment. The children with normal hearing included a younger group (aged 4.6-6.9 yr, N = 10) and an older group (aged 7.3-11.1 yr, N = 11). The adults with normal hearing were aged 19 to 27 yr (N = 10). Adults (aged 1

Causal Relationship between the Right Auditory Cortex and Speech-Evoked Envelope-Following Response: Evidence from Combined Transcranial Stimulation and Electroencephalography.

Speech-evoked envelope-following response (EFR) reflects brain encoding of speech periodicity that serves as a biomarker for pitch and speech perception and various auditory and language disorders. Although EFR is thought to originate from the subcortex, recent research illustrated a right-hemispheric cortical contribution to EFR. However, it is unclear whether this contribution is causal. This study aimed to establish this causality by combining transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and measurement of EFR (pre- and post-tDCS) via scalp-recorded electroencephalography. We applied tDCS

Subcortical rather than cortical sources of the frequency-following response (FFR) relate to speech-in-noise perception in normal-hearing listeners.

Scalp-recorded frequency-following responses (FFRs) reflect a mixture of phase-locked activity across the auditory pathway. FFRs have been widely used as a neural barometer of complex listening skills, especially speech-in noise (SIN) perception. Applying individually optimized source reconstruction to speech-FFRs recorded via EEG (FFREEG), we assessed the relative contributions of subcortical [auditory nerve (AN), brainstem/midbrain (BS)] and cortical [bilateral primary auditory cortex, PAC] source generators with the aim of identifying which source(s) drive the brain-behavior relation betwee
