Plasma cell granuloma of the larynx is a rare benign lesion of unknown etiology, with only 21 cases reported previously. We report an additional case of plasma cell granuloma in which a 26-year-old man experienced a 1.5 × 3.4-cm, completely obstructing subglottic lesion. Because of the patient's young age, history of hemoptysis, bleeding from his tracheostomy, and the rarity of plasma cell granulomas, the patient was assumed to have hemangioma until proven otherwise. He presented with a partially obstructing glottic lesion 4 months later. Both the subglottic and glottic lesions were excised en

Objective. To raise awareness of plasma cell mucositis as a rare differential diagnosis for oral mucosal ulceration and its macroscopic similarity to malignancy. Method. We report a patient who presented with oral features suggestive of malignancy. A biopsy revealed plasma cell mucositis. Results. The patient successfully had a full excision of one lesion and a spontaneous resolution of the other. Conclusion. With the increasing incidence of oral mucosal pathology, physicians should be aware of this differential diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell tumor only rarely affects the cranium and may be found as an isolated lesion or as a part of multiple myeloma. In this review we present the clinical and radiological characteristics and analyze the evolution of two cases of this tumor located at the skull base, specifically in the clivus and sellar region. We also present a brief review of the literature.
CLINICAL CASES: Case #1: The patient was a 66-year-old female with a solitary plasmacytoma of the bone (the isolated form of plasma cell tumor) that was totally removed. Case #2: The patient was a 61-year-old male wi

An 11-year-old, neutered male domestic short-hair cat was presented with buphthalmos of the right eye and diagnosed with advanced glaucoma. Sonographic examination revealed an iridial thickening. Neoplasia was suspected and an enucleation was performed. Histopathology of the enucleated eye revealed abundant amyloid deposition predominantly in the anterior uveal tract accompanied by few to moderate numbers of well-differentiated plasma cells. The amyloid deposits were identified by staining with Congo red and showing green birefringence under polarized light. Immunohistochemically, amyloid and …

Plasma cell neoplasms (plasma cell dyscrasias) are a group of entities characterized by the neoplastic proliferation of a single clone of plasma cells, typically producing a monoclonal immunoglobulin. These tumors can manifest as multiple myeloma, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, plasma cell myeloma, or plasmacytoma. We report two plasma cell tumors, one of them presented with headache and diplopia, and the second one complained from low back pain. The aspirate exhibited numerous plasma cells in various stage of maturation and was initially diagnosed as extra-skeletal solita…

The prognostic relevance of 12p deletion is controversial in multiple myeloma (MM) and the status of 12p deletion is unknown in other plasma cell disorders. We investigated 12p deletion in 88 patients with MM, 19 patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), and 17 patients with plasma cell leukemia (PCL). Cytoplasmic immunoglobulin light chain immunofluorescence with simultaneous FISH analysis (cIg-FISH) detected hemizygous 12p deletion in 8% of MM and 24% of PCL, respectively, but in none of the MGUS cases (p=0.0366). 12p deletions were found in 5 of 7 (71%) MM pat

We report the case of a 41-year-old man who presented with progressive right-sided ear pressure, otalgia, hearing loss, tinnitus, and intermittent otorrhea. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging detected a soft-tissue mass in the right mastoid with intracranial invasion and erosion through the tegmen tympani and mastoid cortex. Histopathologic examination was consistent with an inflammatory pseudotumor (plasma cell granuloma). These lesions rarely occur in the temporal bone. When they do, they are locally destructive and can erode bone and soft tissues. Aggressive surgery is recom

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell panniculitis is a rare histopathological variant of morphea profunda. Its occurrence in two siblings has been reported once. We report a new case in which a brother and a sister with a family history of consanguinity presented plasma cell panniculitis of long duration.
CASE REPORTS: A man and his sister, 38 and 28 years old respectively, presented thick hyperpigmented indurations of the trunk and thighs since puberty. Previous investigations did not lead to any definitive diagnosis. Deep cutaneous specimens taken from both patients exhibited indistinct histological fea

Specific chromosomal abnormalities such as chromosome 13 deletions and some translocations affecting the immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGH) gene, namely t(4;14)(p16;q32) and t(14;16)(q32;q23) have been associated with an adverse prognosis in multiple myeloma. Conventional cytogenetic techniques fail to detect these aberrations in the majority of cases. Thus, we have developed a novel set of interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (I-FISH) assays targeting those regions frequently lost on chromosome 13 as well as those oncogenes most recurrently involved in translocations with the IGH locus

We report a case of a 53-year-old woman who presented with anemia and abnormal uterine bleeding. Endometrial and cervical biopsies revealed infiltration by large atypical cells, which were characterized as neoplastic plasma cells. Further investigations revealed systemic plasma cell dyscrasia (i.e., plasma cell myeloma). We therefore report a case of plasma cell myeloma, initially presenting as abnormal uterine bleeding.

Polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M-protein, and skin changes (POEMS) syndrome is a rare multi-organ disease. Because the peripheral neuropathy is frequently the overriding symptom and because the characteristics of the neuropathy are similar to that chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy(CIDP), patient are frequently misdiagnosed with CIDP or monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) -associated peripheral neuropathy. Production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), secreted by plasmacytoma, is considered responsible for these symptoms. For isola

Atypical monoclonal plasma cell hyperplasia is extremely rare in the central nervous system without involvement of bone or other systemic disease. This neuropathological entity was first described by Weidenheim and colleagues in 1989. It is considered an inflammatory pseudotumor that can evolve into malignant myeloma. We report on an atypical monoclonal plasma cell hyperplasia with bilateral occipital and cerebellar involvement in a 38-year-old woman. The diagnosis was confirmed by brain biopsy immunohistochemical and molecular tests.

BACKGROUND: Crystalline cytoplasmic inclusions are well documented in B cell lymphomas but have rarely been described in reactive plasmacytic infiltrates.
AIM: Three cases of Lelicobacter-associated gastritis are described in which plasma cells focally contained rhomboid and needle-shaped crystalline inclusions.
METHODS: Crystalline inclusions were identified in the gastric biopsy specimens from three patients undergoing routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The cells were characterised immunohistochemically using the following antisera: cytokeratin, leucocyte common antigen, desmin, CD2…

Plasma cell cheilitis is an idiopathic, benign, inflammatory condition characterized by a dense band-like infiltrate of plasma cells in the oral mucosa. In addition to the lips, the disease can affect the penis, vulva, buccal mucosa, palate, gingiva, tongue, epiglottis, and larynx. Some authors have shown the effectiveness of topical or intralesional corticosteroids; however, there have been many reports describing poor therapeutic responses to topical steroids. We describe three patients with plasma cell cheilitis whose clinical condition responded rapidly to the intralesional injection of co…

BACKGROUND: Focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a common histological finding in patients with proteinuria. The natural history of the condition varies, and although it may be responsive to therapy, FSGS is an important cause of end-stage renal disease. FSGS can be caused by a variety of conditions, but it has been reported rarely in association with a plasma cell disorder.
METHODS: Mayo Clinic databases were queried and cross-referenced for FSGS and plasma cell disorders. The diagnoses were confirmed, and relevant clinical and laboratory data were abstracted.
RESULTS: A cohort
