Adventitial cystic disease is a rare nonatheromatous cause of popliteal artery disease. Here, we present a case of a 51-year-old male patient who presented with right calf claudication caused by adventitial cystic disease. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging and intraoperative findings revealed the presence of a connection between the cyst and adjacent knee joint. In addition, histopathological examination revealed that the tissue structure of the connection was similar to that of adventitial cysts. The tissue composed of 2 types of cells, namely macrophages and fibroblast-like cells, and

BACKGROUND: In adults, Baker's cyst development is attributable principally to secondary alterations after degenerative changes. The latter changes often accompany osteoarthritis, and we frequently encounter patients with Baker's cysts seeking total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Baker's cysts are not usually subject to extensive preoperative evaluation because the cysts often disappear naturally after surgery, unaccompanied by any adverse symptoms.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old woman presented with moderate pain in the left knee joint that had developed 1 year ago. Posterior knee pain was aggra

On the basis of a new case of sub-adventitial cystic degeneration of the popliteal artery, the authors review the characteristics of this condition. The diagnosis may be suspected on the basis of clinical and arteriographic findings in an individual in whom the arterial system is otherwise normal. The various aetiological hypotheses are recalled. Treatment in the majority of cases consists of simple excision of the cyst. Intimal changes or segmental obstruction impose the need for resection with restoration of continuity by bypass.

Gray scale ultrasound at a frequency of 5.0 MHz was used as part of a study to evaluate the results of yttrium-90 injection as therapy for rheumatoid arthritis of the knee. Popliteal cysts, suprapatellar effusions and synovial thickening in the suprapatellar pouch were demonstrated and ultrasound studies were correlated with the clinical and arthrographic findings. Gray scale ultrasound can be a useful adjunct in the evaluation and follow-up of rheumatoid arthritis of the knee.

Swellings around the paediatric knee have a large differential diagnosis, although the majority can be diagnosed clinically. Some swellings merit further investigation by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

31 patients suffering from isolated obliteration of the popliteal artery were selected for reporting from a series of 1500 peripheral angiographies. It is pointed out that the lesion is due principally to a segmentary localization of atherosclerosis. A case of adventitial cyst and one of muscular pincer syndrome have also been encountered. Attentive study of angiographic pictures showed up a number of behaviour modalities of the collateral circulation. The surgical approaches available in such circumstances are also reported.

For some atypical para-articular ganglia, the presence of a joint connection is highly controversial. The proper preoperative diagnosis and identification of this joint connection for ganglion cysts is important for patient treatment and outcome. MRI is the imaging modality of choice when evaluating such lesions, but the detection of subtle joint connections remains difficult with conventional MR protocols. We investigated the utility of a steady-state free-precession acquisition with isotropic high resolution using the vastly undersampled isotropic projection reconstruction (VIPR) pulse seque

We report a rare case of degenerative joint disease of both knees, complicated by a Baker cyst. Our emphasis is on the role of electromyography and electrodiagnosis in the localization of this nerve entrapment syndrome. The patient presented with pain and swelling; venography revealed deep venous thrombosis of the right calf, including the popliteal and proximal superficial femoral vessels. The patient responded well to bed rest, analgesics, intravenous heparin and subsequent Coumadin anticoagulation, and was discharged two weeks later. Five weeks after onset of these acute problems, nerve con

Cystic adventitial degeneration is an uncommon vascular condition with a peculiar predilection for the popliteal artery. This disease most commonly affects young men and presents as rapidly progressive calf claudication. We report a case of a 80 years old man. The condition remains one of unknown etiology but our observation support that adventitial cysts are true ganglions which originate from adjacent joint capsule.

The author presents the case-history of a typical clinical picture of a rare vascular affection--cystic degeneration of the adventitia of the popliteal artery in a young man. The diagnostic conclusion was reached by means of duplex sonography and angiography of the extremity, the condition was treated by reconstruction surgery. With regard to its long-term effect the author prefers it to some non-surgical procedures which include in particular transluminal angioplasty or sonographically assisted needle aspiration of the cyst.

The authors report a case of adventitial cyst of the abdominal aorta. This would seem to be the first time that a cyst has been reported in the literature with this localization. A 54 year old female patient was treated surgically for a suspected aneurysm of the abdominal aorta. Her antecedents included syphilis treated with bismuth. The condition began with a lumbago with no clearly defined etiology. An abdominal X-ray without preparation visualized a calcified abdominal tumor in a retroperitoneal position, apparently attached to the aorta. Arteriography showed that the tumor was excluded fro

BACKGROUND: Intraneural cysts involving the tibial nerve in the knee region (popliteal fossa) are rare. According to the articular (synovial) theory, which posits a joint origin for this pathology, these cysts originate from either the superior tibiofibular joint (STFJ) or the tibiofemoral (knee) joint. As tibial intraneural cysts arising from the tibiofemoral joint remain poorly understood, the authors present 2 illustrative cases and a review of the world's literature on all tibial intraneural ganglion cysts in the knee region.
OBSERVATIONS: Fourteen cases of tibial intraneural ganglion cys
