Chemical characteristics and oxidative potential of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 in densely populated urban slums.

A significant proportion of population in metropolitan cities in India live in slums which are highly dense and crowded informal housing settlements with poor environmental conditions including high exposure to air pollution. Recent studies report that toxicity is induced by oxidative processes, mediated by the water-soluble PM chemical components leading to reactive oxygen species production thereby causing inflammatory disorders. Hence, for the first time, this study assessed the chemical characteristics and oxidative potential (OP) of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 in two slums in Mumbai, India.

Epidemiology and Characteristics of Spondyloarthritis in the Predominantly Afro-Descendant Population of Martinique, a French Caribbean Island.

(1) Background: The prevalence of Spondyloarthritis (SpA) varies significantly in different regions and ethnic groups due several factors such as heterogeneity in study populations, the diversity of classification criteria used in epidemiological studies, the prevalence variability of HLA-B27 or disparity in healthcare access. To our knowledge, there is no data on SpA in Martinique, a French region in the Caribbean with a predominantly Afro-descendant population and a high level of healthcare. (2) Methods: This was a retrospective study of all SpA patients treated at the Fort de France Univers

The mortality rates in registries of patients with STEMI are highly affected by inclusion criteria and population characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Different mortality rates are reported in registries of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), but comparisons between registries are challenging. AIMS: To determine whether the higher mortality rate in our regional French registry (SCALIM) is related to different inclusion criteria and demographic characteristics. METHODS: The SCALIM registry included all patients with STEMI within the first 24 h in the region of Limousin, France (06/2011-01/2015). To compare mortality rates with other contemporary registries in France and European neighbouring countri

Association of ECG characteristics with clinical and echocardiographic outcome to CRT in a non-LBBB patient population.

PURPOSE: Effectiveness of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in patients without left bundle branch block (non-LBBB) QRS morphology is limited. Additional selection criteria are needed to identify these patients. METHODS: Seven hundred ninety consecutive patients with non-LBBB morphology, who received a CRT-device in 3 university centers in the Netherlands, were selected. Pre-implantation 12-lead ECGs were evaluated on morphology, duration, and area of the QRS complex, as well as on PR interval, left ventricular activation time (LVAT), and the presence of fragmented QRS (fQRS). Rate and characteristics of urgent hospitalisation in persons with profound intellectual disabilities compared with general population.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the hospitalisation rate of adults with severe/profound intellectual disability (PID) presenting at emergency services or about the appropriateness of hospital admissions in this population. Examining the possible differences in the patterns of hospitalisation between people with PID and those without intellectual disability (ID) may shed light on aspects of health and illness in these patients and may in turn make it possible to differentiate more clearly between mild-moderate ID and PID. METHODS: After an evaluation of the emergency visits made by adults wi

Demographic characteristics and infectious diseases of a population of American black bears in Humboldt County, California.

American black bears (Ursus americanus) are common, widely distributed, and broad-ranging omnivorous mammals in northern California forests. Bears may be susceptible to pathogens infecting both domestic animals and humans. Monitoring bear populations, particularly in changing ecosystems, is important to understanding ecological features that could affect bear population health and influence the likelihood that bears may cause adverse impacts on humans. In all, 321 bears were captured between May, 2001, and October, 2003, and blood samples were collected and tested for multiple zoonotic and vec

Epidemiology of Taenia solium in Nepal: is it influenced by the social characteristics of the population and the presence of Taenia asiatica?

The transmission of the zoonotic pork tapeworms Taenia solium and T. asiatica depends on a combination of specific risk factors, such as open defecation, backyard pig raising and the consumption of raw or undercooked pork and viscera. A community-based survey was conducted among 289 households in south-eastern Nepal to study the heterogeneity of these risk factor frequencies as a function of the social composition of the population. The frequency of open defecation, backyard pig raising and pork consumption differed significantly (P < 0.005) among the different coexisting caste and ethnic grou

[What are the unique characteristics of optico-spinal MS in Japanese and neuromyelitis optica in western populations].

Although the diagnosis of optico-spinal MS (OSMS) is solely based on the unique lesion distribution, the OSMS is clinically characterized by distinctive features which are mostly shared by the clinical characteristics of relapsing neuromyelitis optica (NMO). Conversely, Western investigators appear to consider relapsing NMO as a distinct entity from MS, and distinct characteristics and independent diagnostic criteria for NMO were proposed. However, the key characteristics of OSMS and NMO seem to be quite similar, and therefore the prototype of these disorders are identical which we would like

Lifetime prevalence and characteristics of recurrent primary headaches in a population-based sample of Swedish twins.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the lifetime prevalence and other characteristics of recurrent primary headaches in twins. BACKGROUND: The twin model may provide insights into the role of genetic and environmental influences in headache disorders. However, assumptions as to whether twins are representative of the general population, and whether monozygotic and dizygotic twins are similar have rarely been addressed. METHODS: The study population consisted of a random sample of 17- to 82-year-old twins from the Swedish Twin Registry (n = 1329). Structured interviews on the telephone by lay personnel and

Expanded T cell populations in patients with Wegener's granulomatosis: characteristics and correlates with disease activity.

Patients with Wegener's granulomatosis have a high prevalence of expanded populations of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells bearing different alpha/beta T cell receptors. To elucidate the role of these populations, we studied the phenotypic and functional characteristics of 13 expanded T cell populations in four patients for a period of 35-51 months. The expanded populations generally showed a persistently high expression of the activation markers HLA-DR and CD25. This expression was independent of the activity of the disease. The expanded populations also expressed CD45RO and/or CD45RA and most of them ex
