Oral Health in Children With Congenital Heart Diseases: A Comprehensive Narrative Review.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital anomaly among live births, and can present in different forms. Due to significant improvements in the surgical treatment of CHDs, the population of children with CHDs is increasing. Studies have shown that these children have worse oral health than their healthy counterparts. This is mainly due to a lack of oral hygiene measures, a lack of fluoride exposure, insufficient water intake, sugar intake, and the effect of cardiac medications. Due to poor oral health, they also have a prevalence of caries and gingival diseases, and need com

[Expert consensus on the management of obesity in the elderly(2026 edition)].

Obesity in the elderly has become a prominent public health issue. Due to physiological changes and multimorbidity in the elderly population, obesity presents complex clinical manifestations with markedly increased management difficulties. Based on this, National Center for Gerontology, Obesity and Diabetes Group, Chinese Diabetes Society, Chinese Medical Association organized a multidisciplinary panel of experts in obesity and formulated this consensus after multiple rounds of rigorous evaluation and iterative revisions. The consensus emphasizes that the management of geriatric obesity requir

Effectiveness of Self-Management Education for Deaf Individuals With Hypertension: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

In South Korea, hypertension (HTN) is prevalent among deaf individuals, with a reported rate of 63.9%, which is higher than in the general population. To manage this condition effectively, a self-management education intervention is needed. In particular, since deaf individuals generally exhibit low levels of health literacy, it is essential to develop interventions that consider their limited health literacy. This study evaluates the impact of the Hypertension Self-Management Education for the Hearing Impaired Using Sign Language (H-SMILE) program. Using a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent co

Aging With Cystic Fibrosis: Endocrine and Metabolic Considerations.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) has transitioned from a disease predominantly affecting the pediatric population to a chronic disease of adulthood. As patients with CF continue to prolong their survival with CF transmembrane conductance regulator modulator therapy, there has become increased relevance of age-related endocrine, metabolic, and cardiovascular complications. Endocrinopathies in this population include but are not limited to diabetes, bone disease, menopause, and obesity. In this review, we summarize the current evidence on these endocrine and metabolic complications, emphasizing the importan

Characterization of Background Exposures to Ethylene Oxide in the United States: A Reality Check on Theoretical Health Risks for Potentially Exposed Populations near Industrial Sources.

Ethylene oxide (EO) is an industrial chemical and sterilant that is released into ambient air from natural and unregulated anthropogenic sources that contribute to background exogenous exposure and from regulated industrial sources that contribute to additional exogenous exposure for near-facility populations. Metabolic processes contribute to substantial background endogenous exposures to EO, complicating the interpretation of the relation between total background exposure and the health significance of added industrial exogenous exposure. In 2021, Kirman and colleagues characterized the tota

Approach to Pediatric Intractable Migraine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Intractable migraine in children and adolescents is a significant cause of disability and decreased quality of life (QoL) in this population. Challenges include lack of unifying definition for intractable migraine, and limited data on best-practice management in this age group, with most current treatment pathways extrapolated from adult studies or expert consensus. RECENT FINDINGS: A comprehensive approach in the evaluation and management of intractable migraine in this age group encompasses excluding secondary causes of headache; making an accurate diagnosis; identifying

Nourishing collaboration: interdisciplinary nutrition education for health care professionals.

Nutrition education remains insufficient in many health care professional training programs despite the central role of diet in the prevention and management of chronic disease. Contemporary nutrition science increasingly recognizes that dietary behaviors and health outcomes are shaped by complex interactions among biological, behavioral, environmental, and food system factors. This perspective proposes an interdisciplinary framework for nutrition education that integrates the complementary expertise of physicians, dietitians, chefs, and farmers. By bridging clinical care, nutrition science, c

Geographic assessment of access to health care in patients with cardiovascular disease in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) including cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease are increasingly emerging as major contributors to morbidity and mortality in developing countries. For example, in South Africa, 195 people died per day between 1997 and 2004 from CVDs related causes. Access to efficient and effective health facility and care is an important contributing factor to overall population health and addressing prognosis, care and management CVD disease burden. This study aimed to spatially evaluate geographic health care access of people d

Impact of resistance exercise in type 1 diabetes pediatric patients.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune condition whose prevalence is prominent in children and adolescents, resulting in insulin deficiency with a potential for long-term complications induced by glucotoxicity. As an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attack insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, leading up to complete or near-complete inability to control the blood glucose levels independently. The lack of glycemic control calls for lifelong exogenous insulin administration in conjunction with careful monitoring to control blood sugar levels and prevent acute a

Can lay community health workers be trained to use diagnostics to distinguish and treat malaria and pneumonia in children? Lessons from rural Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the competence of community health workers (CHWs) to correctly assess, classify and treat malaria and pneumonia among under-five children after training. METHODS: Consultations of 182 under-fives by 14 CHWs in Iganga district, Uganda, were observed using standardised checklists. Each CHW saw 13 febrile children. Two paediatricians observed CHWs' assessment, classification and prescription of treatment, while a laboratory scientist assessed CHW use of malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). The validity of CHWs' use of RDTs to detect malaria and respiratory timers to dia

Clustering of electronic health records in atrial fibrillation patients and impact on prognosis and patient trajectories: a UK linked-dataset study.

AIMS: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is characterized by heterogeneity in presentation, comorbidity profile and prognosis, with different AF subphenotypes having been previously suggested. Mental health disorders are common in the AF population. The current classification of AF, based on episode duration, fails to capture the complexity of the condition. Machine learning (ML) techniques and utilization of information on mental health disorders might improve identification of different and actionable AF subphenotypes. METHODS AND RESULTS: We utilized Nationwide UK data from the Clinical Practice Res

Modeling the impact of public health education on tungiasis dynamics with saturated treatment: Insight through the Caputo fractional derivative.

Public health education is pivotal in the management and control of infectious and non-infectious diseases. This manuscript presents and analyses a nonlinear fractional model of tungiasis dynamics with the impact of public health education for the first time. The human population is split into five classes depending on their disease status. The infected population is split into two subgroups; infected but unaware and infected but aware. The model focuses on the impacts of public health education, contact and treatment contact on tungiasis transmission dynamics. Notably, public health education

Exploring the understanding and management of anxiety from cancer in Latino/a older adults and their caregivers.

PURPOSE: Aging and cancer have profound effects on patient and caregiver anxiety which negatively impacts physical symptoms, treatment engagement and response, and well-being. Despite the high rates of anxiety in Latino/a older adults with cancer (OACs) and their caregivers, large disparities in mental health care access and quality are prevalent in this population. A better understanding of anxiety experiences is needed to inform the development of effective anxiety interventions for this population. METHODS: A qualitative study, containing interviews (n = 7) and focus groups (n = 4) with pa

Qualitative Experiences of Older Adults Participating in a Student-Delivered Community Outreach TeleheAlth Program for COVID Education and Health Promotion.

Chronic diseases are prevalent in Canada's aging population (≥65 years), which makes practicing positive health behaviors (e.g., physical activity and healthy diet) critical for the management of chronic diseases (e.g., stroke and heart disease). However, novel coronavirus (COVID-19) prevention strategies of quarantining, social isolation, and physical distancing may compromise one's ability to manage health and engage in daily activities, possibly increasing the risk of adverse health events. The Community Outreach teleheAlth program for Covid education and Health promotion (COACH) program ha

Citizenship and health insurance status predict glycemic management: NHANES data 2007-2016.

The prevalence of diabetes in United States (US) immigrants is higher than the general population. Non-citizenship and lack of health insurance have been associated with increased health risks including diabetes, but previous US studies were done in non-representative samples and did not examine the effect on glycemic management. The purpose of this study was to compare demographic, metabolic, and behavioral risk factors for increased blood glucose including citizenship and health insurance status, and determine predictors of poor glycemic management (A1C ≥ 8.0%). Logistic regression was used
