Detection of proximal dental caries in primary teeth with a near-infrared-irradiation-assisted intraoral scanner: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: The early detection of dental caries is crucial for successful dental care. New intraoral scanners using near-infrared irradiation (NIRI) technology track preventive lesions without ionizing radiation. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of intraoral scanners (IOSs) in detecting proximal caries in primary posterior teeth, compared to conventional methods such as loupes-assisted clinical exams and bitewing (BW) radiography. METHODS: Fifteen examined tooth surfaces were used to produce a total of 60 scores by a restorative dentistry consultant (RDC). The tooth surfaces were

Periodontal ageing and its management via pharmacological glucose modulation.

Periodontal disease (PD), a widespread non-communicable disease, affects over 90% of the global population with no known cure. Current management strategies focus on the stabilisation of disease progression, which is successfully achieved to a limited extent. Yet the never-ending battle between bacteria and the gingiva involves a complex interplay between genetic, microbial and environmental factors, demanding innovative approaches to improve the prevention and stabilisation of this disease. Glucose is the body's source of energy and research has shown that dysregulation of the glucose metabol

Super Minimally Invasive Pulp Therapy for Severe Pulpitis: A Report of Two Cases.

In regions where preventive dentistry is widespread, tooth loss due to root fracture occurs approximately 10 times more frequently than that due to caries and periodontal disease. Root fracture is most likely to occur in non-vital teeth, where the dental pulp has been removed, often through a procedure known as pulpectomy. However, super minimally invasive pulp (SMIP) therapy has recently been reported as a novel treatment approach for pulpitis of any degree. In this study, SMIP therapy was performed to preserve the vitality of teeth in two patients with severe pulpitis. Case one involved a 35…

Fabrication of a radiotherapy device for an eyelid using a dental computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing system.

In radiotherapy for eyelid malignant tumors, a shield containing lead has typically been used to protect the eye and prevent complications such as cataracts, blindness, and eyesight deterioration associated with external irradiation. However, the fabrication of the shield involves complex steps, including making an impression of the eye. Recently, digital technologies such as 3-dimensional (3D) scanners have become popular in dentistry. In this report, a shield was fabricated using a dental computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing system based on 3D digital data of the orbital an

Horizontal Ridge Augmentation With Symphyseal Autograft: Clinical and Radiographic Analysis.

Horizontal ridge augmentation with symphyseal autograft is a reliable method of treating alveolar ridge deficiencies in the anterior mandible. Autogenous bone grafts from intraoral donor sites have been regarded as the gold standard for reconstructing jaws. The symphysis is an easily available source of corticocancellous bone with good osteogenic, osteoinductive, and osteoconductive characteristics. This case report illustrates the horizontal ridge augmentation with symphyseal block grafts successfully before implant placement. Fixation screws were used to fix harvested blocks to the ridged de

Osteomyelitis of the mandible in patients with a history of COVID-19 infection: clinical, histologic, and radiographic presentations.

COVID-19 is a serious global infectious disease impairing the quality of life of people across the world. SARS-CoV-2 may reside in nasopharyngeal and salivary secretions of COVID-19-infected patients and spreads mainly through respiratory droplets and fomites. It has presented a challenge to dentistry, as many dental procedures generate aerosols that could lead to cross-contamination. It also presents many post-infection complications that may continue to debilitate patients, even after successful management of the virus. One such complication may be osteomyelitis of the jaw. Two cases of post

[Can gingival hyperplasia caused by cyclosporin A be prevented by removing dental plaque?].

In Hungary, there are around 3500 people living with a transplanted organ, there are around 400 total donations, including between 250 and 300 kidney transplants per year. Due to the development of immunosuppression and surgical techniques, the survival rate of patients has improved, and therefore dentists are increasingly confronted with gingival hyperplasia due to immunosuppressive therapy in addition to oro-dental lesions resulting from renal failure. The prevalence of gingival hyperplasia with cyclosporin A can be as high as 90%. The aim of our study is to raise awareness of the importance

Osteonecrosis of the jaw in primary dental care: Recognition and referral.

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) are uncommon conditions, however when present they have a significant impact on a patient's quality of life and are notoriously difficult to treat. With medical advances resulting in improved survival rates and increased life expectancy, it is likely that general dental practitioners (GDPs) will more frequently be involved in the oral health management of patients at risk of both ORN and MRONJ. Though management of both diseases is beyond the scope of primary care dentistry, the GDP still has a key role in the pat

Overview of Candida albicans and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Infection Agents and their Biomolecular Mechanisms in Promoting Oral Cancer in Pediatric Patients.

Oral carcinoma represents one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) account over 90% of all oral malignant tumors and are characterized by high mortality in the advanced stages. Early diagnosis is often a challenge for its ambiguous appearance in early stages. Mucosal infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible for a growing number of malignancies, particularly cervical cancer and oropharyngeal carcinomas. In addition, Candida albicans (C. albicans), which is the principal fungi involved in the oral cancer development, may induce carcin

Restorative aspects of periodontal disease: an update part 1.

UNLABELLED: Today's dentistry is dominated by restorative procedures which are carried out to meet the demands of not only function but also aesthetics. Prosthetic and restorative therapies generally require a healthy periodontium as a prerequisite for successful treatment outcome. A mouth with a healthy periodontium may be affected by restorations of poor quality, and restorations of the highest quality may fail in a mouth with periodontal disease. This is the first of two articles that attempt to explain the concept of the complex question of biologic width and the problems that occur after
