To date, lack of functional hydrogel inks has limited 3D printing applications in tissue engineering. This study developed a series of photocurable hydrogel inks based on chitooligosaccharide (COS)-polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) for extrusion-based 3D printing of bone tissue scaffolds. The scaffolds were prepared by aza-Michael addition of COS and PEGDA followed by photopolymerisation of unreacted PEGDA. The hydrogel inks showed sufficient shear thinning properties required for extrusion 3D printing. The printed scaffolds exhibited excellent shape fidelity and fine microstructure with …

Three-dimensional (3D) food printing is a rapidly emerging technology offering unprecedented potential for customised food design and personalised nutrition. Here, we evaluate the technological advances in extrusion-based 3D food printing and its possibilities to promote healthy and sustainable eating. We consider the challenges in implementing the technology in real-world applications. We propose viable applications for 3D food printing in health care, health promotion and food waste upcycling. Finally, we outline future work on 3D food printing in food safety, acceptability and economics, et…

The breakthrough of 3D printing in biomedical research has paved the way for the next evolutionary step referred to as four dimensional (4D) printing. This new concept utilizes the time as the fourth dimension in addition to the x, y, and z axes with the idea to change the configuration of a printed construct with time usually in response to an external stimulus. This can be attained through the incorporation of smart materials or through a preset smart design. The 4D printed constructs may be designed to exhibit expandability, flexibility, self-folding, self-repair or deformability. This revi…

Immersion precipitation three-dimensional printing (ip3DP) and freeform polymer precipitation (FPP) are unique and versatile methods of 3D printing to fabricate 3D structures based on nonsolvent-induced phase separation via direct ink writing (DIW). Immersion precipitation involves complex dynamics among solvents, nonsolvents, and dissolved polymers, and the printability of 3D models in these methods requires further understanding. To this end, we characterized these two methods of 3D printing using polylactide (PLA) dissolved in dichloromethane (7.5-30% w/w) as model inks. We analyzed the rhe…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the biological properties of modified 3D printing scaffold (PTS) and applied the hybrid graft for in situ transplantation.
METHODS: PTS was prepared via 3D printing and modified by Pluronic F-127. Biocompatibility of the scaffold was examined in vitro to ascertain its benefit in attachment and proliferation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Moreover, a hybrid trachea was constructed by combining the modified PTS with decellularized matrix. Finally, two animal models of in situ transplantation were established, one for repairing tracheal local window-shape d…

In 3D printing, as in other manufacturing processes, there is a push for zero-defect manufacturing, mainly to avoid waste. To evaluate the quality of the printed parts during the printing process, an accurate 3D measurement method is required. By scanning the part during the buildup, potential nonconformities to tolerances can be detected early on and the printing process could be adjusted to avoid scrapping the part. Out of many, shape-from-focus, is an accurate method for recovering 3D shapes from objects. However, the state-of-the-art implementation of the method requires the object to be s…

This study was conducted to check whether benzene is contained inside the petroleum-based cleaning agent used in the printing industry and measure whether it is actually exposed to the air. Benzene was analyzed inside the cleaning agent and air exposure evaluation was done by area sampling. Risk assessment was performed using the Chemical Hazard Risk Management (CHARM) technique. Most products contained benzene based on the results obtained from this study. As a result of collecting air samples and checking whether the workers were exposed to benzene actually, benzene was detected in three sam…

Inkjet printing has the potential to advance the treatment of eye diseases by printing drugs on demand onto contact lenses for localised delivery and personalised dosing, while near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy can further be used as a quality control method for quantifying the drug but has yet to be demonstrated with contact lenses. In this study, a glaucoma therapy drug, timolol maleate, was successfully printed onto contact lenses using a modified commercial inkjet printer. The drug-loaded ink prepared for the printer was designed to match the properties of commercial ink, whilst having maxi…

In recent years, many research studies have focused on the application of 3D printing in the production of orthopaedic back braces. Several advantages, such as the ability to customise complex shapes, improved therapeutic effect and reduced production costs place this technology at the forefront in the ongoing evolution of the orthopaedic sector. In this work, four different materials, two of them poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and two of them poly(ethylene terephthalate glycol) (PETG), were characterised from a thermal, mechanical, rheological and morphological point of view. Our aim was to understa…

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the clinical application of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology in the surgical treatment of congenital scoliosis caused by hemivertebrae.
METHODS: Twenty-four patients (11 in the 3D-printing group and 13 in the conventional group) with scoliosis secondary to a single hemivertebra were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent hemivertebrectomy and short-segment fixation. Virtual preoperative planning, operation simulation, and intraoperative application of 3D-printed patient-specific templates were performed in the 3D-printing group. Hemor…

Technological advancements in surgical planning and patient-specific implants are constantly evolving. One can either adopt the technology to achieve better results, even in the less experienced hand, or continue without it. As technology develops and becomes more user-friendly, we believe it is time to allow the surgeon the option to plan his/her operations and create his/her own patient-specific surgical guides and fixation plates allowing him full control over the process. We present here a protocol for 3D planning of the operation followed by 3D planning and printing of surgical guides and…

The purpose of our research was to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of a novel three-dimensional printed biopolymer device (3DP-BPD) for duct-to-mucosa pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) in minipigs. Polylactic acid (PLA) was selected as the raw materials for 3DP-BPD. Three components of a 3DP-BPD were designed and manufactured: hollow stent, supporting disk, and nut. A pancreatic duct dilation model was developed in six minipigs. After 4 weeks, minipigs underwent operations with duct-to-mucosa PJ using 3DP-BPD. The operation time and postoperative complications were analyzed. The anastomotic

A 3-dimensional printed model derived from a computed tomography dataset was obtained in a patient with tetralogy of Fallot and major aortopulmonary collaterals. The virtual and solid 3-dimensional heart models provided intuitive representation of such complex and highly individual pathologies and allowed comprehensive spatial conceptualization of the cardiac structures. (Level of Difficulty: Advanced.).

PURPOSE: Patients with maxillofacial deformities always seek for aesthetic prosthesis. Recently, three-dimensional printing technologies have been used for dental treatments on such patients.
CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old man reported to the Department of Prosthodontics for replacement of his missing right ear induced by a trauma. A magnet-retained auricular prosthesis was planned for the patient. Three-dimensional scanning was performed on the healthy side by using a three-dimensional optical scanner and the data were mirrored. The mirrored image was then imported to a software and a virtual mo…

Direct silicone printing may be applied to the fabrication of maxillofacial prostheses, although its clinical feasibility is unknown. The present clinical report shows an early application of a directly printed silicone prosthesis for the rehabilitation of a nasal defect. Two extraoral scanning systems were used to capture the face and the defect. The virtual construction of the nasal prosthesis was performed with free-form software. Two prostheses were printed in silicone and post-processed by manual sealing and coloring. The clinical outcome was acceptable for an interim prosthesis; however,…
