BACKGROUND: Disruptive behavior and emotional problems - especially anxiety - are common in children and frequently co-occur. However, the role of co-occurring emotional problems in disruptive behavior intervention response is unclear. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of an indicated prevention program in children with disruptive behavior problems with vs. without co-occurring emotional problems.
METHODS: Children were screened for disruptive behavior and emotional problems during routine health check-ups and - if indicated - were offered a child-centered group prevention program

A previous randomized controlled trial comparing problem-focused computer-assisted skills training (ScouT) with supportive resource activation treatment (STARK) in children (6-12 years) with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD) demonstrated significant pre-post changes in both treatment conditions, with ScouT being slightly superior on some outcomes. Based on the same sample (N = 99), the present study examined cross-sectional indirect associations between treatment condition and outcomes via intermediate variables, which conceptually correspond to mediation. We hypothesized that ScouT would le

We examined the functions of five severe problem behaviors in a sample of 417 institutionalized persons with mental retardation by using the Questions About Behavior Function Scale. The behaviors we examined included self-injurious behavior, aggression, stereotypies, pica, and rumination. The most common function for all behaviors except aggression was nonsocial. Aggression, however, was maintained by external environmental contingencies. Particular items of the Questions About Behavior Function Scale were identified as more frequently occurring and critical in ascertaining behavioral function

BACKGROUND: Children of parents with mental illness (COPMI) experience a range of emotional behavioral problems throughout their development, mainly due to family and environmental factors. Therefore, the current study investigated the role of parental acceptance/rejection and chaotic home environment in developing externalizing and internalizing behavioral problems among Pakistani children and adolescents affected by parental mental illness. METHODS: The study followed a cross-sectional research design. A purposive sample of 300 children and adolescents (51.3% girls; Mage =14.31; SDage = 2.23

Developmental onset has been linked to addictive problems and severity, including for behavioral addictions like gambling disorder. Individual differences associated with race have been linked to addictive behaviors and disorders in complex manners. Race is understood as a multidimensional construct encompassing biological and social influences. This raises questions about how race should be conceptualized and modeled in brain-behavior relationship studies relevant to addictive behaviors and disorders. Here, we consider two recent publications involving early initiation of substance use (EISU)

Some mentoring programs for youth have incorporated principles or strategies from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but research addressing the effectiveness of such programs is limited. This research is an evaluation of the impact of participation in Reach & Rise®, a program in which all mentors are supported in using CBT principles in their relationships with youth. Researchers randomly assigned youth either to be matched with a mentor through Reach & Rise® (i.e., treatment group; n = 316) or a waitlist control group (n = 284). We examined intent-to-treat effects using youth and caregiver

BACKGROUND: Technology has significantly reshaped the landscape and accessibility of gambling, creating uncharted territory for researchers and policy makers involved in the responsible gambling (RG) agenda. Digital payment solutions (DPS) are the latest addition of technology-based services in gambling and are now prominently used for deposit and win withdrawal. The seamless collaboration between online gambling operators and DPS, however, has raised concerns regarding the potential role of DPS platforms in facilitating harmful behavior.
OBJECTIVE: Using a focus group session with problem ga

Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) are at risk for social, emotional, and behavioral (SEB) maladjustment throughout development, though it is unclear if poor language proficiency per se can account for this risk as associations between language and SEB appear more variable among typical-language children. This study investigated whether the relationship between language and SEB problems is stronger at very low levels of language and considered confounders including socioeconomic status, sex, and nonverbal intelligence. These were examined using a population-based survey design

Using data collected in a study of arrested youths processed at a juvenile assessment center who entered a home-based family intervention project, the authors test a three-stage longitudinal model. The model reflects a developmental damage view of the relationships of the youths' family problems (including their physical abuse and sexual victimization experiences) to their drug use and delinquent behavior over time. The hypothesized model is supported by the data. Research, theoretical, and policy implications of the results are drawn.

BACKGROUND: Most previous studies have focused on the clinical efficacy after intervention of ESDM, particularly in core symptoms. However, only a few have paid attention to the effectiveness of ESDM on emotional dysregulation and behavior problems in children with ASD. This study aimed to explore the effect of the ESDM on addressing emotional dysregulation and behavior problems in children with ASD in China, as well as its correlation with core symptoms of ASD.
METHODS: A total of 319 children aged 1.5 to 5 years were included in this study and received treatment based on the ESDM interventi

OBJECTIVE: Research shows that a high proportion of college seniors experience alcohol problems repeatedly. The present study examined associations between behavioral willingness to experience alcohol consequences, protective behavioral strategies (PBS) to reduce harmful drinking, drinking, and repeated alcohol problems (RAP) early in the senior year, and how these constructs influenced behavioral willingness, PBS, drinking, and RAP later in the senior year.
METHOD: The sample included randomly selected first-year students from a large northeastern university who met the inclusion criterion o

Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY) is associated with problems in social interaction and behavioral adaptation. Sixteen adolescents and adult men with 47,XXY enrolled in a pilot-study evaluating the effectiveness of Social Management Training (SMT), a novel neurocognitive-behavioral treatment program targeted at improving social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. Participants reported improved emotional stability from pre- to post-test (5 months). Informants reported reductions in internalizing and externalizing symptoms, including improvement in self-regulation. Although informants did not re

Systematic processes are needed to develop valid measurement instruments for disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs) in cross-cultural settings. We employed a four-step process in Nepal to identify and select items for a culturally valid assessment instrument: 1) We extracted items from validated scales and local free-list interviews. 2) Parents, teachers, and peers (n=30) rated the perceived relevance and importance of behavior problems. 3) Highly rated items were piloted with children (n=60) in Nepal. 4) We evaluated internal consistency of the final scale. We identified 49 symptoms from 11 sca

Sleep disturbances affect 50%-80% of autistic individuals and are linked to heightened risk for psychiatric comorbidities and dangerous behaviors, including self-injury, suicidal ideation, and aggression. While previous studies have identified correlational relationships, few have examined whether sleep problems predict dangerous behaviors in large, real-world samples. This study used retrospective clinical data from a behavioral health nonprofit to investigate whether sleep problems predict dangerous behaviors among autistic individuals, accounting for age and adaptive functioning. The sample

INTRODUCTION: In preschool children, teacher-child relationships and psychological resilience-particularly its self-regulation component-have been identified as important correlates of behavioral problems. However, the nature of their relationship and the mechanism of their interaction still require further understanding and exploration.
METHODS: Drawing on teacher-reported questionnaires, this two-wave longitudinal study (N = 240 Chinese left-behind preschool children, 1-year interval) assessed teacher-child relationships (closeness and conflict), three facets of resilience (initiative, self

Parenting stress plays a central role in influencing both parents' and children's well-being among mothers experiencing homelessness who have young children in their care. However, limited research has examined the efficacy of housing interventions in reducing parenting stress and promoting children's behavioral outcomes. Using a randomized longitudinal experimental design, we examined the effects of an integrative housing intervention, ecologically based treatment (EBT), on the longitudinal change of parenting stress among a sample of young mothers experiencing homelessness with substance use
