Beyond the scalpel: humanistic training and professional identity formation in postgraduate plastic surgery education.

OBJECTIVE: Postgraduate plastic surgery education has traditionally emphasized anatomical knowledge, operative technique, aesthetic judgment, and procedural competence. However, plastic surgery practice is also shaped by aesthetic expectations, body image concerns, psychosocial vulnerability, medico-legal risk, and commercialized doctor-patient relationships. These tensions suggest that technical training alone is insufficient for preparing trainees to manage the humanistic challenges of contemporary plastic surgery. This study aimed to develop a Professional Identity Formation (PIF)-based hum

Best clinical practices for male adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse: "do no harm".

The health care literature describes treatment challenges and recommended alterations in practice procedures for female survivors of childhood sexual abuse, a subtype of adverse childhood experiences. Currently, there are no concomitant recommendations for best clinical practices for male survivors of childhood sexual abuse or other adverse clinical experiences. Anecdotal information suggests ways physicians can address the needs of adult male survivors of childhood sexual abuse by changes in communication, locus of control, and consent/permission before and during physical examinations and pr

Clinical Nurse Specialists' Perceptions of Competency and Self-Efficacy in Evidence-Based Practice and Implementation Science.

BACKGROUND: Research and demonstration projects have shown that the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role is uniquely suited to lead implementation of evidence-based clinical practice changes for improved outcomes and reduced costs to healthcare systems. CNS practice competencies closely align with the design, development, and implementation of evidence-based practice change. National data on CNS's knowledge and use of implementation science to guide EBP implementation is lacking. AIMS: A CNS professional organization implementation science team and a university evidence-based practice center

From Anxiety to Action: Mental Health Education Transforming Pharmacy Students' Self-Care and Resilience.

OBJECTIVE: Pharmacy students experience alarmingly high rates of mental health challenges, with 18% to 60% reporting depressive symptoms, 21% to 50% experiencing anxiety, and up to 17% reporting suicidal ideation. Despite recognizing the importance of self-care, students struggle to prioritize their well-being, creating a critical knowledge-behavior gap, while professional resilience declines throughout training. METHODS: This study examined how a 2-session mental health educational intervention was associated with reported shifts in pharmacy students' cognition of stress, self-care, and prof

Education and training for health professionals on disability inclusion: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities continue to experience profound and avoidable health inequities. Health professionals play a key role in addressing these inequities yet often lack the competencies and preparedness to provide equitable and rights-based care. To advance disability inclusion within health professions education, clarity is needed on which themes are currently represented in existing education and trainings. The objectives of this scoping review are 1) to describe how disability-related content has been incorporated into education and training for health professionals, and 2)

Doctors Playing Lawyers: Lessons for Professional Regulation in Crisis.

When someone gets in legal trouble in America, their case is almost invariably decided by a lawyer (a judge), lay people (a jury), or a combination of the two. Professional discipline, however, is a giant unexplained exception. In professional discipline matters, accusations of dangerous or incompetent practice are decided, usually in the first instance but always in the last, by state licensing boards composed of other members of the accused's profession. These licensing boards wield immense power as labor regulatory institutions, covering ten times as many American workers as the minimum wag

Heterogeneity in attitudes toward early recognition of clinical deterioration among emergency department nurses in China and its relationship with triage competence: a multicenter survey analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emergency department nurses' attitudes toward early disease deterioration affect their assessment behavior and triage ability. A negative attitude delays assessment, impacting patient prognosis. Analyzing attitude characteristics, cultivating positive attitude and enhancing triage abilities are crucial. This study aims to identify distinct profiles of attitudes toward the early recognition of clinical deterioration among emergency department (ED) nurses in China, analyze demographic and statistical factors associated with these profiles, and explore the relationship between these a

Identification of Nonfatal Strangulation by 911 Dispatchers: Suggestions for Advances Toward Evidence-Based Prosecution.

Research highlights the need for systematic law enforcement training on nonfatal strangulation in domestic violence situations to improve evidence-based prosecution of these violent felonies. However, most of this research focuses on the role of police officers in the safety response. Although often overlooked, this research examines the role of 911 dispatchers, who are many times the first person the victim calls for assistance. This study examines official domestic violence records, gathered through a partnership with a County Sheriff's agency, to determine whether domestic violence strangul

Deliberate acquisition of competence in physiological breech birth: A grounded theory study.

PROBLEM: Research suggests that the skill and experience of the attendant significantly affect the outcomes of vaginal breech births, yet practitioner experience levels are minimal within many contemporary maternity care systems. BACKGROUND: Due to minimal experience and cultural resistance, few practitioners offer vaginal breech birth, and many practice guidelines and training programmes recommend delivery techniques requiring supine maternal position. Fewer practitioners have skills to support physiological breech birth, involving active maternal movement and choice of birthing position, in

Expressing pride: Effects on perceived agency, communality, and stereotype-based gender disparities.

Two experimental studies were conducted to investigate how the expression of pride shapes agency-related and communality-related judgments, and how those judgments differ when the pride expresser is a man or a woman. Results indicated that the expression of pride (as compared to the expression of happiness) had positive effects on perceptions of agency and inferences about task-oriented leadership competence, and negative effects on perceptions of communality and inferences about people-oriented leadership competence. Pride expression also elevated ascriptions of interpersonal hostility. For a

The effectiveness of airline pilot training for abnormal events.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of airline pilot training for abnormal in-flight events. BACKGROUND: Numerous accident reports describe situations in which pilots responded to abnormal events in ways that were different from what they had practiced many times before. One explanation for these missteps is that training and testing for these skills have become a highly predictable routine for pilots who arrive to the training environment well aware of what to expect. Under these circumstances, pilots get plentiful practice in responding to abnormal events but may get little practice in

Von Willebrand factor assay proficiency testing. The North American Specialized Coagulation Laboratory Association experience.

We evaluated the accuracy and precision of von Willebrand disease (vWD) testing performed by up to 50 North American Specialty Coagulation Laboratories from 2004 through 2009, using proficiency samples from healthy subjects (n = 7) and patients with type 1 vWD (n = 7) or type 2 vWD (n = 3). We analyzed 2,212 submitted results. Precision was highest for von Willebrand factor (vWF) antigen assays (coefficient of variation, 14%), which were performed predominantly by latex immunoassays, and lowest for ristocetin cofactor assays (coefficient of variation, 28%), which were increasingly replaced by
