The senior author's 8-year personal experience with biocompatible ossicular implants is reviewed. Four hundred sixty-one consecutive operations, in which high-density polyethylene sponge ossicular replacement prostheses were used, are grouped according to the Bellucci classification of chronic otitis media. A method of reconstructing the severely atrophic mandible that simultaneously provides additional strength and the ability to house osseointegrated implants is presented. The performance of the procedure from an external approach minimizes the possibility of oral contamination and, therefore, infection. Two-year observations on 17 patients after the implantation of bilaterally velour vascular prostheses were made. In the postoperative course 5 prostheses underwent occlusion. Special attention was given to the behaviour of the prostheses above and below the knee-joint. The velour vascular prostheses made by the Research Centre Tricomed in Lódź could be a good alternative to other grafts in the surgical treatment of occlusion located in the above knee but in occlusions below the knee they can be used only exceptionally.

UNLABELLED: The standard cervical disc surgery includes removal of the disc and fusion using an anterior approach. The loss of motion associated with fusion has prompted a search for other options. Early experiences and results after implantation of disc prostheses allowing for biomechanical motion of healthy discs are evaluated in this study.
