Online digital recovery support services: An overview of the science and their potential to help individuals with substance use disorder during COVID-19 and beyond.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and related social distancing public health recommendations will have indirect consequences for individuals with current and remitted substance use disorder (SUD). Not only will stressors increase risk for symptom exacerbation and/or relapse, but individuals will also have limited service access during this critical time. Individuals with SUD are using free, online digital recovery support services (D-RSS) that leverage peer-to-peer connection (i.e., social-online D-RSS) which simultaneously help these individuals to access support and adhere to public health

[Eduard Lent (1831-1911): founder and supporter of public health care, social institutions, and physician self-management].

Modern urology owes much to our predecessors. Researchers in the 20th century were able to develop their specialist techniques and their professional independence on the basis of the fundamental studies and measures carried out by their predecessors in the 19th century. As a medical practitioner, Eduard Lent provided pioneering solutions to the three major sociomedical problems of his time, namely wide-spread epidemics like cholera, social inequalities, and lack of organization of the medical profession. His answer are to be found in the organization of public healthcare, establishment of suit

Endemicity of onchocerciasis in some local government areas of Niger state.

The established method of justifying the need for ivermectin delivery to a community is the use of Rapid Assessment Method (RAM). This method involves the clinical examination of 50 adult males, who have been resident in the community for at least five years, for onchocercal nodules and leopard skin. The values obtained for these indices will guide the classification of such a community as being hypoendemic, mesoendemic or hyperendemic. Those that fall within mesoendemic and hyperendemic category onchocerciasis qualify for ivermectin delivery. This study was carried out to determine the endemi

Is the United States country zero for the First-World AIDS epidemic?

The incidence for AIDS per hundred thousand is several times higher in the United States than in the rest of the First World. Earlier work by Thompson (1984, 1989a, b, 1990, 1998) indicated that a relatively small proportion of gay males frequenting the bathhouses in the United States, drove AIDS over the epidemiological threshold in the U.S. It is shown that the rate of growth of AIDS is essentially the same for the United States and other First-World countries. An argument is advanced, based on WHO AIDS data, to the effect that it is contact with the pool of infectives in the United States t

Vascular endothelium summary statement V: Pulmonary hypertension and acute lung injury: public health implications.

Although relatively rare, pulmonary hypertension can be devastating for those individuals who are affected and has significant societal implications. The 2003 WHO classification separates PAH (idiopathic, specific disease linked) from pulmonary hypertension related to lung disease, thromboembolic disease, and pulmonary venous hypertension. Another form of pulmonary hypertension, persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), occurs in the newborn. In general, PPHN is thought to be responsible for approximately 10% of admissions to neonatal intensive care units and can be a complicating factor in 5

Comparing demographics, clinical presentation, treatments and outcome between systemic lupus erythematosus patients treated in a public and private health system in Santa Fe, Argentina.

The study includes 159 SLE patients seen between 1987 and 2011, of whom 116 were treated in the public health system and 43 in private practice. In the comparison between both groups, it was shown that patients in the public health system were younger at first consultation and at the onset of SLE, and that the mean duration of their disease prior to nephropathy was statistically significantly shorter. They also presented with more SLE activity (measured by Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Activity Index) such as fever, lower levels of C4, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Although cyclo

Assessing a decade of public health preparedness: progress on the precipice?

September 11 and the subsequent anthrax attacks marked the beginning of significant investment by the federal government to develop a national public health emergency response capability. Recognizing the importance of the public health sector's contribution to the burgeoning homeland security enterprise, this investment was intended to convey a "dual benefit" by strengthening the overall public health infrastructure while building preparedness capabilities. In many instances, federal funds were used successfully for preparedness activities. For example, electronic health information networks,

[The institutionalization of vaccination in Spain: from smallpox to the National Vaccination Schedule (1803-1975)].

Vaccination has played a central role in the historical development of public health in Spain and in the progressive institutionalization of state health intervention. From the late eighteenth century onwards, the fight against smallpox acted as a driving force for increasingly systematic preventive policies, evolving from variolation to jennerian vaccination and its administrative regulation. The Royal Philanthropic Vaccine Expedition (1803-1813) represented the first major milestone in this process, transforming vaccination into an organized, permanent practice under public authority. The future of cholera genomics through the lens of clinical, public health, and research practitioners in Africa.

Cholera remains a persistent public health threat, complicating efforts to track transmission across borders and undermining control measures. Surveillance systems often remain fragmented and reactive, and many aspects of Vibrio cholerae evolution continue to be challenging, restricting the development of effective, data-driven interventions. Although genomics is increasingly transforming our understanding of cholera by revealing new insights into pathogen biology, transmission dynamics, and evolution, its routine integration into public health practice remains low. In this Personal View, we p…

Exploring patient and health care provider perspectives on barriers to diabetic retinopathy screening in public health facilities in North India.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a prevalent microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), can be prevented with early detection and timely intervention. DR is asymptomatic in its early stages, highlighting the importance of screening for accurate referral and effective management. Multiple barriers impede access to diabetic retinopathy screening (DRS), creating significant public health challenges in regions with high DM prevalence. This study explores the perspectives of people with DM (PwDM) and healthcare providers (HCP) on these barriers. A qualitative study using in-depth interviews (I

Ten Core Concepts for Ensuring Data Equity in Public Health.

IMPORTANCE: Public health decisions increasingly rely on large-scale data and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and mobile health. However, many populations-including those in rural areas, with disabilities, experiencing homelessness, or living in low- and middle-income regions of the world-remain underrepresented in health datasets, leading to biased findings and suboptimal health outcomes for certain subgroups. Addressing data inequities is critical to ensuring that technological and digital advances improve health outcomes for all. OBSERVATIONS: This article proposes 10

The prevalence of asthma in children: a reversing trend.

In several countries it has been observed that there has been no further increase in the prevalence of asthma. This study aimed to look at asthma prevalence in children during the past 15-30 years in The Netherlands. Both general practice registration (Continuous Morbidity Registration, Nijmegen) and surveys of the public health service in Limburg (Southern parts of the Netherlands) were used for this purpose. The general practice registration showed that after a five-fold increase in asthma prevalence during the 1980s and 1990s a downward trend seemed to occur around the turn of the century.
