The lengths of a pig's small intestine length (SIL) and cecum-colon length (C-CIL) are crucial for nutrient absorption and substantially affect feed utilization efficiency. Thus, selecting for increased intestinal lengths could enhance feed digestibility. However, conventional methods for measuring these traits pose considerable challenges. To address these drawbacks, we explored the use of molecular breeding techniques to refine the selection process. In this study, 413 age-matched Yorkshire barrows were humanely killed, and their SIL and C-CIL were measured. Genotyping was conducted using a

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a highly heritable chronic inflammatory arthritis characterized by osteoproliferation, fusion of affected joints and systemic manifestations. Many disease associations for AS have been reported through genome-wide association studies; however, identifying modulated genes and functional mechanism remains challenging. This review summarizes current genetic associations involving AS and describes strategic approaches for functional follow-up of disease-associated variants. Fine mapping using methods leveraging Bayesian approaches are outlined. Evidence highlighting

A recent genome-wide meta study suggested that rs67338227 in the FHL5 gene and rs10456100 in the KCNK5 gene are associated with migraine from 27 population-based cohorts excluding Chinese population. Given that migraine without aura (MO) is the most common subtype of migraine, our aim was to systematically investigate the relationship of common variants in FHL5 and KCNK5 genes with the susceptibility to MO and provide clues as to the nature of the mechanisms involved in the etiology of migraine. A total of 3306 subjects including 1042 patients with MO and 2264 controls were recruited for the d

BACKGROUND: An optimal seedling development of Brassica napus plants leads to a higher yield stability even under suboptimal growing conditions and has therefore a high importance for plant breeders. The objectives of our study were to (i) examine the expression levels of candidate genes in seedling leaves of B. napus and correlate these with seedling development as well as (ii) detect genome regions associated with gene expression levels and seedling development traits in B. napus by genome-wide association mapping.
RESULTS: The expression levels of the 15 candidate genes examined in the 509

SUMMARY: We determined factors associated with serum sclerostin in 446 Afro-Caribbean family members. Age, weight, sex, diabetes and kidney function were associated with sclerostin. Sclerostin was heritable, and nine SNPs in the SOST gene region were associated with sclerostin. Variation in serum sclerostin is a heritable factor that is determined by both genetic and environmental factors.
INTRODUCTION: Sclerostin, encoded by the SOST gene, is a Wnt inhibitor that regulates bone mineralization and is a candidate gene locus for osteoporosis. However, little is known about the genetic and non-g

While the genetic and environmental contributions to developmental dyslexia (DD) have been studied extensively, the effects of identified genetic risk susceptibility and of specified environmental hazardous factors have usually been investigated separately. We assessed potential gene-by-environment (GxE) interactions on DD-related reading, spelling and memory phenotypes. The presence of GxE effects were investigated for the DYX1C1, DCDC2, KIAA0319 and ROBO1 genes, and for seven specified environmental moderators in 165 nuclear families in which at least one member had DD, by implementing a gen

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a phenotypically and etiologically heterogeneous set of disorders that include obsessive-compulsive behaviors (OCB) that partially overlap with symptoms associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The OCB seen in ASD vary depending on the individual's mental and chronological age as well as the etiology of their ASD. Although progress has been made in the measurement of the OCB associated with ASD, more work is needed including the potential identification of heritable endophenotypes. Likewise, important progress toward the understanding of genetic

A genetic segregation analysis was performed to identify genes that cosegregate with arterial blood pressure traits reflective of salt sensitivity. A population of 113 F2 male rats was derived from an intercross of inbred SS/JrHsd/Mcw (Dahl salt-sensitive) and BN/SsN/Mcw (Brown Norway) rats. Rats were maintained on an 8% salt diet from the age of 9 to 13 wk, and arterial pressure was measured for 3 h daily during the 4th wk of high salt intake in unanesthetized rats using implanted arterial catheters. At the end of the 3rd day of high-salt pressure recordings, the arterial pressure response to

BACKGROUND: Many studies detect associations between parent behaviour and child symptoms of anxiety and depression. Despite knowledge that anxiety and depression are influenced by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental risk factors, most studies do not account for shared familial genetic risk. Quantitative genetic designs provide a means of controlling for shared genetics, but rely on observed putative exposure variables, and require data from highly specific family structures.
METHODS: The intergenerational genomic method, Relatedness Disequilibrium Regression (RDR), indexes enviro

Evolutionary rescue-the process by which adaptive evolution prevents population extinction following environmental deterioration -is frequently proposed as a buffer against biodiversity loss under climate change, yet its capacity to alter future population trajectories is rarely assessed quantitatively. Most forecasts of evolutionary rescue rely on simplified demographic models, focus on a single adaptive trait, and explore hypothetical environmental scenarios rather than standardized climate pathways, neglecting uncertainty from demographic and internal climate variability. We developed a hyp

BACKGROUND: Temperament and personality traits have been suggested as endophenotypes for bipolar disorder based on several lines of evidence, including heritability. Previous work suggested an anxious-reactive factor identified across temperament and personality inventories that produced significant group discrimination and could potentially be useful in genetic analyses. We have attempted to further characterize this factor structure in a sample of bipolar patients.
METHODS: A sample of 1195 subjects with bipolar I disorder was evaluated, all with complete data available. Dimension reduction

The GAIT (Genetic Analysis of Idiopathic Thrombophilia) Project is a family-based study dedicated to elucidating the genetic basis of hemostasis-related phenotypes and thrombosis risk. In this paper, we have examined several lesser-studied hemostasis-related phenotypes in the 21 GAIT families: levels of vitamin B 12, serum folate, whole blood folate, alpha2-antiplasmin, prekallikrein, beta2-glycoprotein I, soluble P-selectin, factor XIII A and B subunits and a new coagulation measurement based on thromboplastin time in the presence or absence of thrombomodulin. Accurate genomic profiling for adult height is of high practical relevance in forensics genetics. Adult height is a classical reference trait in the field of human complex trait genetics characterized by highly polygenic nature and relatively high heritability. A meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies by the Genetic Investigation of Anthropocentric Traits (GIANT) consortium has identified 697 DNA variants associated with adult height in Europeans; however, whether these variants will still be informative in non-Europeans is still in question. The present study investigated the predic

UNLABELLED: Using a moderate-sized cohort selected with extreme BMD (n = 344; absolute value BMD, 1.5-4.0), significant association of several members of the Wnt signaling pathway with bone densitometry measures was shown. This confirms that extreme truncate selection is a powerful design for quantitative trait association studies of bone phenotypes.
INTRODUCTION: Although the high heritability of BMD variation has long been established, few genes have been conclusively shown to affect the variation of BMD in the general population. Extreme truncate selection has been proposed as a more power

INTRODUCTION: Our previous work established the AD-BXD mouse panel as an innovative model for studying the genetic complexity and heterogeneity underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we leveraged this model and proteomics approach to identify protein signatures linked to cognitive resilience in AD.
METHODS: We assessed cognitive performance in 6-month-old AD-BXD mice using contextual fear conditioning and calculated a quantitative resilience score. Frontal cortex proteomes were analyzed using data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry. Protein quantitative trait loci (pQTL) m

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is considered to be an adverse effect of long-term treatment with atypical antipsychotics, particularly clozapine. There is strong evidence that the activation of inflammatory pathways interferes with normal metabolism and contributes to the development of MetS. C3, which is an inflammation molecule, has been reported to be associated with MetS. Because C3 is a heritable trait, we accordingly hypothesized that the gene encoding C3 (C3) would be a candidate gene for inter-individual variation in clozapine-induced MetS. We recruited 576 schizophrenia patients taking clo

BACKGROUND: Low bone mineral density (BMD) is a primary risk factor for osteoporosis and is a highly heritable trait, but appears to be influenced by many genes. Genome-wide linkage studies have highlighted the chromosomal region 3p14-p22 as a quantitative trait locus for BMD (LOD 1.1 - 3.5). The FLNB gene, which is thought to have a role in cytoskeletal actin dynamics, is located within this chromosomal region and presents as a strong candidate for BMD regulation. We have previously identified significant associations between four SNPs in the FLNB gene and BMD in women. We have also previousl

For sustainable genetic improvement of crops like sorghum, assessing genetic variability and knowing the nature and extent of the association between grain yield and yield-related traits is a prerequisite. However, there needs to be sufficient information about the genetic variability study as well as yield-related trait correlation and path coefficient analysis for sorghum accessions, especially those from southern Ethiopia. Hence, this field experiment assessed genetic variability, determined the nature and extent of phenotypic-genetic correlation, and analyzed the path coefficients among 17

Hypertension (HTN) is quantitatively the major cardiovascular risk factor and responsible for ∼50% of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Blood pressure (BP) is also a classical complex genetic trait with heritability estimates of 30-50%. Although much is known about BP regulation, the intrinsic origin of essential HTN remains obscure although many environmental factors are known. Analyses of rare monogenic syndromes of HTN have focused attention on pathways that involve renal sodium handling, and steroid hormone metabolism including the mineralocorticoid receptor activity. The genetic bas

To date, all known Alzheimer's disease genes influence amyloid β (Aβ). Imaging of Aβ deposition in the human brain using positron emission tomography (PET) tracers as [11C]Pittsburgh Compound B ([(11)C]PiB) or [18F]FDDNP offers the possibility of using cortical tracer binding as a quantitative endophenotype for genetic studies of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this review we investigate the association between cerebral Aβ burden, as measured by amyloid PET imaging, and different genetic risk factors involved in AD. Through a look at the major genetic risk factors for both early-onset f
