Multidimensional Pathogen Fingerprinting via DNA Scaffold-Confined Enzymatic Synthesis of Silicon Quantum Dots.

Accurate and highly sensitive detection of pathogenic bacteria is essential to public health. Conventional biosensors often rely on bulk sig … p-aminophenol (PAP), creating a reducing microenvironment that drives in situ nucleation of silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) from the silane precursor N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl] ethylenediamine (DAMO). Using Staphylococcus aureus as a model pathogen, this approach provides dual-mode readouts: an ultrasensitive fluorescence response with a detection limit of 23 …

Scalable synthesis, characterization, and DFT-machine learning modelling of Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots.

Two-dimensional Ti3C2T x MXenes exhibit exceptional electrical conductivity and tunable surface chemistry; however, reduction to zero-dimensional quantum dots (MQDs) affords quantum confinement and enriched functionalization, modulating the optoelectronic and electrochemical properties. In this research study, we developed a protocol for laboratory-level scale-up synthesis using TMAOH, yielding high-quantum-dot production with enhanced surface functionalization. XRD analysis confirmed quantum confinement, with the crystallite sizes sharply reducing from 8.68 nm (nanosheets) to ∼2 nm (MQDs). FT…

Unconventional Biexciton Dynamics in Superradiant Perovskite Quantum Dots Driven by Many-Body Correlations.

Excitons and biexcitons emission traits, for example, quantum yield, lifetime, and coherence, govern device performance metrics including brightness, optical gain thresholds, and the efficiency of single- and entangled-photon generation. Biexcitons are conventionally understood to radiatively decay more rapidly than excitons. This view stems largely from studies in strongly confined quantum dots (QDs), where inter-exciton correlations are often neglected. In contrast, weakly confined systems such as large CsPbBr3 QDs exhibit significant Coulomb correlations, necessitating a revised framework f…

Thermodynamic Stabilization of PbS Quantum Dots for High-Performance Short-Wave Infrared Photodetection.

The development of lead sulfide (PbS) quantum dot (QD) photodetectors for short-wave infrared (SWIR) applications has been fundamentally limited by the thermodynamic instability of large PbS QD facets, which leads to aggregation and epitaxial fusion. In this work, robust thermodynamic stabilization was achieved by introducing methylammonium chloride (MACl) in PbS QD surface passivation, as validated by theoretical modeling and experimental characterization. MACl passivation reconstructed the surface energy landscape, establishing a physical barrier that suppressed PbS QD fusion and ligand re-a

Quantum dots at the oncology interface: Transforming breast cancer diagnosis, imaging, and treatment.

Breast cancer is one of the major causes of cancer-related illnesses and deaths globally, which calls for the use of advanced technologies in early diagnosis, precise imaging, and effective therapy. Quantum dots (QDs) have become extremely versatile nanomaterials due to their size-dependent optical properties, large surface area, and easily modifiable physicochemical properties; thus, they can be used in a wide range of applications from diagnosis to therapy. Latest changes show that inorganic, carbon-based, and graphene-derived QDs can be made more biocompatible, controllable in their targeti…

Tetrazine Ligation on Semiconductor Quantum Dots Requires Specific Surface Coating and Tagging Architectures.

The tetrazine ligation, an inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction between tetrazine and a dienophile such as norbornene (Nb) or trans-cyclooctene (TCO), has characteristics that make it a potentially ideal chemistry for the preparation of nanoparticle bioconjugates. Although this click chemistry has been used for this purpose, relatively little is known about how to optimize nanoparticle surface chemistry and tagging with reactive functional groups to maximize the chances of successful conjugation. Here, we addressed this open question with quantum dots (QDs) by preparing and testing a p…

Photoreceptor-targeted engineered exosomes encapsulating black phosphorus quantum dots for alleviating photoreceptor degeneration.

Photoreceptor degeneration is a major cause of irreversible visual impairment worldwide, most notably in retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Here, we developed a dual-targeted therapeutic nanoplatform by loading black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) into human dental pulp mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (hDPSC-Exos) and surface-modifying with cell-penetrating peptide transactivated transcription (TAT) and photoreceptor-specific peptide MH42, namely TAT/MH42-engineered black phosphorus quantum dot-loaded exosomes (M/T-BPQD@Exos). M/T-BPQD@Exos showed typical exosomal morphology and good uniformit…

Interplay between Chiro-Optical and Spin Transport Properties in Chiral CdSe Quantum Dots.

The chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect offers compelling approaches for manipulating spin-dependent processes in both chemistry and physics, yet the physical mechanism(s) underpinning CISS are still debated. Here we present a study of structure-property relationships in chiral quantum dot assemblies to identify attributes of CISS-based phenomena. Our results show that the circular dichroism (CD) strength of chiral CdSe quantum dots' primary exciton transition correlates with two CISS properties, the propensity to transmit pure spin currents and to produce spin-polarized charge curre…

Interface Regulated Solid-State Rectification of Peptide via Quantum Dots Self-Assembly Monolayer.

Peptides have been demonstrated as promising candidates for constructing bioelectronic devices. The charge transport through peptides can be effectively modulated via intrinsic composition, structure, and, most notably, interfacial engineering. However, achieving specific electrical properties, such as solid-state rectification, remains a challenge in peptide-based bioelectronics. To fill this gap, a solid-state heterojunction is designed based on the uniform and densely-packed bilayers composed of peptide and quantum dots (QDs) self-assembled monolayer. The presence of a QDs monolayer markedl…

Casein-Tb-Ti3C2 quantum dots ratiometric fluorescence probe for the detection of ciprofloxacin.

A water-stable ratiometric fluorescence probe based on casein-Tb-Ti3C2 quantum dots was developed for the highly sensitive and selective detection of ciprofloxacin. With the increase in ciprofoxacin concentration, the fluorescence intensity at 440 nm remained relatively stable, while the fluorescence emission at 543 nm exhibited progressive enhancement. This may be attributed to ciprofloxacin being able to effectively coordinate with Tb3+ ions while displacing surrounding water molecules, leading to enhanced luminescence. Thus, the I543/I440 ratio was utilized as an indicator for monitoring ch…

Sustainable carbon quantum dots from Mahua (Madhuca longifolia) for biomedical and environmental applications.

With the goal of creating environmentally friendly therapeutic Carbon Quantum Dots (CQD), we explored the potential of a wildflower, Mahua (Madhuca longifolia), as a carbon source. The Mahua tree holds significant socio-economic importance in eastern and central India. Applying a conventional hydrothermal technique, we synthesized CQDs of a tiny size of ~ 5.77 nm. To authenticate the synthesized CQDs X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta potential, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), UV-visible spectroscopy,…

Graphene Quantum Dots for High-Sensitivity and Selective Detection of Industrial Wastewater Components.

Industrial wastewater typically contains heavy metal ions and dye molecules that, once released into aquatic environments, can alter pH levels and exert harmful effects on aquatic organisms. Through bioaccumulation along the food chain, these pollutants ultimately pose serious risks to human health. In this work, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method using 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic anhydride as the precursor with water, ethanol, and dimethylformamide selected as solvents of varying polarity. Systematic characterization revealed that decreasing solvent …

Perfect Zeeman Anisotropy in Rotationally Symmetric Quantum Dots with Strong Spin-Orbit Interaction.

In nanoscale structures with rotational symmetry, such as quantum rings, the orbital motion of electrons combined with a spin-orbit interaction can produce a very strong and anisotropic Zeeman effect. Since symmetry is sensitive to electric fields, ring-like geometries provide an opportunity to manipulate magnetic properties over an exceptionally wide range. In this work, we show that it is possible to form rotationally symmetric confinement potentials inside a semiconductor quantum dot, resulting in electron orbitals with large orbital angular momentum and strong spin-orbit interactions. We f

CdTe@ZnS quantum dots for rapid detection of organophosphorus pesticide in agricultural products.

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) constitute the most widely employed class of pesticides. However, the prevalent use of OPPs, while advantageous, raises concerns due to their toxicity, posing serious threats to food safety. Chemical sensors utilizing quantum dots (QDs) demonstrate promising applications in rapidly detecting OPPs residues, thereby facilitating efficient inspection of agricultural products. In this study, we employ an aqueous synthesis approach to prepare low toxic CdTe@ZnS QDs with stable fluorescence properties. To mitigate the risk of imprecise measurements stemming from th…

Aqueous phase transfer of near-infrared ZnCuInS2/ZnS quantum dots: Synthesis and characterization.

Cadmium-free and NIR fluorescent QDs are promising candidates for bio-application. Thus, we present the synthesis of ternary ZnCuInS2/ZnS (ZCIS/ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) where the molar variation of Cu/Zn of the precursors was used to tune the optical and structural properties. QDs with Cu/Zn molar ratio of 2/1 passivated with ZnS exhibited the best optical properties. They showed dominant near-infrared photoluminescence (approx. 850 nm) and highest quantum yield (approx. 52 %, λexc = 500 nm). Therefore, they were further subject to modification to ensure their transfer to the aqueous phase and …

InP/ZnS quantum dots cause liver damage in rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) larvae.

InP/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) are widely used in biomedical imaging and light-emitting component manufacturing industries, but there are few studies on their biological toxicity. In this study, we conducted experiments with rare minnow larvae and found that InP/ZnS QDs can cause liver damage. InP/ZnS QDs appeared only in the intestine of larvae and were not enriched in other parts of the larvae. The activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) increased, while the decrease in bile acid. InP/ZnS QDs caused hepatic cell nuclear lysis, a…

Efficient Detection of Nerve Agents through Carbon Nitride Quantum Dots: A DFT Approach.

V-series nerve agents are very lethal to health and cause the inactivation of acetylcholinesterase which leads to neuromuscular paralysis and, finally, death. Therefore, rapid detection and elimination of V-series nerve agents are very important. Herein, we have carried out a theoretical investigation of carbon nitride quantum dots (C2N) as an electrochemical sensor for the detection of V-series nerve agents, including VX, VS, VE, VG, and VM. Adsorption of V-series nerve agents on C2N quantum dots is explored at M05-2X/6-31++G(d,p) level of theory. The level of theory chosen is quite adequate …

Non-Toxic CuInS2 /ZnS Colloidal Quantum Dots for Near-Infrared Light-Emitting Diodes.

Ternary CuInS2 quantum dots (QDs) with photoluminescence that is tunable from the visible to the near-infrared (NIR) region are promising light-emitters for consumer electronics due to the absence of toxic elements such as Pb, Cd, or As. Despite the compelling performance of visible-light-emitting CuInS2 QDs, reports on NIR emission remain limited, with modest efficiencies at wavelengths beyond 900 nm. In this work, the facile synthesis of NIR-emitting CuInS2 /ZnS QDs is reported. A combination of two sulfur precursors w as used in the synthesis, comprising 1-dodecanethiol (DDT) and hexamethyl…
