Are there racial and ethnic disparities in sleep problems among people with chronic pain? Systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep problems and chronic pain frequently co-occur, but racial and ethnic disparities in sleep problems among individuals with chronic pain are not well understood. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized current evidence and identified research gaps. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and COCHRANE for English-language studies published by February 28, 2025, reporting the prevalence of sleep problems across racial and ethnic groups with chronic pain. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist was used to assess methodolo

Whose Knowledge Counts? Considering Gender, Sexuality, and Race in Description, Prediction, and Causal Inference in Oral Epidemiology.

This commentary examines how the systematic exclusion of voices across gender, sexuality, and race shapes oral epidemiology to serve the interests of a few powerful groups. Focusing on the core functions of the field, including description of disease patterns, prediction of outcomes, and causal inference, we elaborate on empirical examples to argue for a reorientation of oral epidemiology. We advocate for an approach that centers reflexivity, applies intersectional analyses, and embeds inclusive governance across all stages of knowledge production to advance more equitable oral health outcomes

Characterizing Sleep-Disordered Breathing by Race and Ethnicity: Phenotypes, Risk, and Clinical Implications-Part 1.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is an extremely prevalent disorder and mostly underdiagnosed. Its prevalence is even higher among African Americans (AA), Hispanic, Asian Americans and Native Americans (NA) adults and children. AA present younger, with more severe and comorbid OSA, and are sleepier than their white counterparts. Evidence suggests this problem could be as severe in Hispanics, Asian Americans and NA. This first part of the review will focus on epidemiology and data in the adult population.

Distribution of opioid analgesics by community racial/ethnic and socioeconomic profiles, 2011-2021.

Rapid declines in opioid analgesics dispensed in American communities since 2011 raise concerns about inadequate access to effective pain management among patients for whom opioid therapies are appropriate, especially for those living in racial/ethnic minority and socioeconomically deprived communities. Using 2011 to 2021 national data from the Automated Reports and Consolidated Ordering System and generalized linear models, this study examined quarterly per capita distribution of oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine (in oral morphine milligram equivalents [MMEs]) by communities' racial/ethnic

Navigating Complexities: Vitamin D, Skin Pigmentation, and Race.

Vitamin D plays a critical role in many physiological functions, including calcium metabolism and musculoskeletal health. This commentary aims to explore the intricate relationships among skin complexion, race, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels, focusing on challenges the Endocrine Society encountered during clinical practice guideline development. Given that increased melanin content reduces 25(OH)D production in the skin in response to UV light, the guideline development panel addressed the potential role for 25(OH)D screening in individuals with dark skin complexion. The panel discov

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Subjective Cognitive Decline - United States, 2015-2020.

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD), the self-reported experience of worsening or more frequent memory loss or confusion, might be a symptom of early-stage dementia or future serious cognitive decline such as Alzheimer disease* or a related dementia (ADRD) (1). Established modifiable risk factors for ADRD include high blood pressure, inadequate physical activity, obesity, diabetes, depression, current cigarette smoking, and hearing loss (2). An estimated 6.5 million persons aged ≥65 years in the United States live with Alzheimer disease, the most common dementia (1). This number is projected to

Exploring Heart Failure Mortality Trends and Disparities in Women: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis.

Heart failure (HF) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in women. Population-level analyses shed light on existing disparities and promote targeted interventions. We evaluated HF-related mortality data in women in the United States to identify disparities based on race/ethnicity, urbanization level, and geographic region. We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis utilizing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database to identify HF-related mortality in the death files from 1999 to 2020. Age-adjusted HF mortalit

Racial variations in complications and costs following total knee arthroplasty: a retrospective matched cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we evaluate how race corresponds to specific complications and costs following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Our hypothesis was that minority patients, comprising Black, Asian, and Hispanic patients, would have higher complication and revision rates and costs than White patients. METHODS: Data from 2014 to 2016 were collected from a large commercial insurance database. TKA patients were assigned under Current Procedural Terminology (CPT-27447) and International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD-9-P-8154) codes. Minority patients were compared to White p

Population-Level Disparities in Exposure to COVID-19 Mitigation Policies, April 2020-April 2021.

CONTEXT: Studies have found that COVID-19 stay-at-home orders (SHOs) and face mask policies (FMPs) were associated with reduced COVID-19 transmission and deaths. But it is unknown whether exposure to these policies varied by sociodemographic characteristics across the US population. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to quantify and characterize the sociodemographic characteristics and geographic distribution of populations exposed to evidence-based COVID-19 mitigation policies. DESIGN: We obtained statewide SHOs and FMPs for all US counties from April 10, 2020, to April 10, 2021, calcula

County social isolation and opioid use disorder among older adults: A longitudinal analysis of Medicare data, 2013-2018.

This study aims to fill three knowledge gaps: (1) unclear role of ecological factors in shaping older adults' risk of opioid use disorder (OUD), (2) a lack of longitudinal perspective in OUD research among older adults, and (3) underexplored racial/ethnic differences in the determinants of OUD in older populations. This study estimates the effects of county-level social isolation, concentrated disadvantage, and income inequality on older adults' risk of OUD using longitudinal data analysis. We merged the 2013-2018 Medicare population (aged 65+) data to the American Community Survey 5-year coun

Addressing Systemic Bias in Violence Risk Assessment.

Criminal history plays a prominent role in violence risk assessments. For people in nondominant groups, disproportionate criminal justice involvement may unfairly and inaccurately elevate violence risk in evaluations. Criminal justice reports continue to document higher rates of arrest and convictions for those in minoritized racial groups. Bureau of Justice surveys have found that ethnic minorities are more likely to serve time when crime is violent than are Whites. Black males ages 18 and 19 were 12.7 times more likely to be imprisoned than White males of the same ages. In fact, across all a…
