Pandemic-related racial discrimination and its health impact among non-Indigenous racially minoritized peoples in high-income contexts: a systematic review.

This study aims to review articles reporting the perspectives and experiences of pandemic-related discrimination among racially minoritized … hysical abuse, hypersurveillance, and avoidance, often occurring in public spaces. Pandemic-related racism had subsequent impacts on mental health and health care accessibility. Various coping strategies, including community support, avoidance, and problem solving, were documented in response to racial discrimination. Racialized discrimination and violen …

Using an oral history approach to understand perspectives of intergenerational trauma in African American women.

This brief report explores how African American women describe the intergenerational transmission of trauma and its perceived influence on stress and cardiometabolic health. Using an Oral History approach, semi-structured interviews were analyzed from participants in the parent HARMONY study. Analytic themes spanned work-life imbalance, medical racism, hypervigilance, reproductive autonomy, and physical safety. Women described balancing "controlled emotions" and "controlled actions" to navigate relationships and maintain bodily control. Although findings are preliminary and non-generalizable, …

Designing Thoracic Surgical Care That Works for All: A Quality Improvement Approach to Disparities.

This article conceptualizes disparities in thoracic surgery outcomes as modifiable quality improvement failures that undermine reliability, timeliness, and effectiveness across the care continuum. It links inequities to upstream determinants, including differential tobacco exposure, environmental and occupational carcinogens, health literacy, and structural racism, which together influence risk and access to guideline-concordant care. The authors describe process failures in detection and referral-particularly low uptake of low-dose computed tomographic screening and delayed specialty consulta…

Guidelines and Policies: Implications for Individual and Population Health.

Rising rates of prescription opioids for chronic pain from the 1990s along with a concomitant worsening overdose crisis led to rapid evaluation and public health strategies to curb problems with prescription opioids. Guideline development, grounded in solid theory but based on limited evidence that translated into rigid and discordant policies, has contributed to controversies in pain management, worsening the treatment experience for people experiencing chronic pain and highlighting existing inequities from a system clouded with systemic racism. Newer public health approaches need to evaluate…

Mental Health and Support Systems After Experiences of Sexual Victimization Among Young Sexual Minoritized Women and Gender Minoritized People.

This study aims to describe institutional and social supports for sexual and gender minoritized populations. Participants are from a mixed-method study on experiences of sexual violence among sexual and gender minoritized young people. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze data from semi-structured interviews (n = 25). One major barrier participants described included structural discrimination and violence (i.e., biphobia, misogyny, racism), which in turn contributed to challenges accessing support systems including mental health providers, sexual health services, and positive social…

Lessons Learned from Community-Based Participatory Research: Recruiting Older Black Adults in Clinical Research.

INTRODUCTION: Black participants, especially older adults, remain underrepresented in clinical research due to longstanding barriers, including systemic racism within the health care system and resulting mistrust of medical and research institutions. METHODS: Using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) framework, this paper identifies facilitators and barriers for recruiting older Black adults into a community-based exercise study, emphasizing collaboration and co-learning with community members. RESULTS: Strategies include building community partnerships, developing culturally app…

Traumatic brain injury, race, ethnicity and cognition in newly diagnosed persons with multiple sclerosis.

We sought to determine whether a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) could explain the lower symbol digit modalities test (SDMT) scores observed among newly diagnosed multiple sclerosis (MS) and control participants identifying as Black or Hispanic versus white in the MS Sunshine Study (n = 1172). 330 (29.2 %) participants reported a history of ≥1 TBI. Accounting for TBI did not explain the significant independent associations between having MS, being Black or Hispanic and lower SDMT. The pervasive effects of systemic racism in the United States remain the best explanation for the lower SD…

The Neurophysiology of Violence: José Delgado and the Stimoceiver.

This paper traces the history of José Delgado's stimoceiver, a brain-implant device used to control aggression via electrical stimulation, f … of psychosurgical violence control. By the 1970s, however, critiques linking such interventions to racism and repression transformed the stimoceiver from symbol of scientific progress into emblem of biomedical overreach.

Commentary: Moral and Ethical Leadership in the Age of Diversity, Equity, Inclusiveness and Social Accountability.

This article weighs three important moral and ethical considerations for leaders in healthcare: their obligations to society, their privilege as leaders and how value goes beyond a simple cost analysis. Leaders highly motivated by the bottom line have avoided the long overdue action on moral and ethical considerations critical to a more just and fairer society. Leaders are now being tasked to develop strategies for health equity, anti-oppression, anti-racism, social justice, diversity, equity and inclusiveness, community engagement, the social determinants of health and environmental accountab…

Doctor-patient relations in Nazi Germany and the fate of psychiatric patients.

German psychiatrists actively engaged in the forced sterilization and killing of psychiatrically disabled children and adult patients. Academic psychiatrists embraced the Nazi philosophy and led the way in the "final solution" for psychiatric patients. This took place in a climate of widespread racism, virulent anti-Semitism, disillusionment with utopian social reforms, loss of medical confidentiality, devaluation of autonomy, intoxication with collectivism, injured national pride, and economic crisis. In this paper I review the impact on the physician-patient relationship of scientific, socio…

"Eugenics is an integral aspect of our global scientific and political culture:" interview with Marius Turda.

Despite public condemnation after the defeat of Nazism, eugenic ideas continue to persist into the twenty-first century in different countries and contexts and with varying forms of intensity and support, as seen in events such as the covid-19 pandemic and the George Floyd case, discourse by contemporary far-right populist governments, and the 2024 US presidential election. This interview with Professor Marius Turda, a prominent scholar in the field of race, racism, and eugenics, presents his work and his itinerant exhibition entitled "We are not alone: legacies of eugenics," aimed at speciali…

Maternal health and incarceration: advancing pregnancy justice through research.

This paper will review the state of the science on maternal health and incarceration. We will provide a historical context on women, pregnancy, and mothers as it relates to mass incarceration, considering both structural racism and reproductive justice. We will discuss existing research that documents care, treatment, and outcomes of individuals who are incarcerated while pregnant or postpartum in the United States. We will discuss the implications of carceral exposure on birthing people and their families. By synthesizing current research and relevant policies, we will identify gaps that will…

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men: A discussion to be had.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a lifelong disability of varying severity that occurs among individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol. Among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) Australians, the effects of colonisation and ongoing racism could increase the risk of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Much of the research and the effort towards prevention of and caring for people with FASD in Indigenous communities has been targeted towards women and children. More support and effort towards prevention of FASD is needed across the whole Indigenous community. In this pap…

Parental incarceration and health risks in a population-based study of U.S. early adolescents: Results among racialized groups.

Parental incarceration is an adverse childhood experience that inequitably burdens families of color and affects millions of U.S. children and adolescents. Although racialized disparities in exposure to parental incarceration are often acknowledged, researchers have yet to examine whether manifestations of racism may affect the link between parental incarceration and youth outcomes. This study provides a first look at how parental incarceration relates to health vulnerabilities in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, an ongoing, population-based study of U.S. children born …

Predictors and prevalence of support for white nationalism in the United States.

White nationalism has become increasingly visible in American public life1-10. Yet we lack knowledge of the predictors and prevalence of explicit support for this ideology, as survey research has treated it as a latent construct captured through indirect indicators11-15. We introduce and validate a measure that informs respondents of the core tenets of the white nationalist movement and then asks whether they support the movement. Expressed support is distinct from organizational affiliation with the movement, which we do not measure. Here we show with three national surveys of non-Hispanic wh

Understanding African American help-seeking for romantic relationships: Advocacy, barriers, and considerations.

African American couples experience greater levels of relationship distress than other racial/ethnic groups, but they are less likely to seek formal couple counseling. Existing literature highlights the importance of community support in the form of church, family, and friends. While the literature suggests that African Americans encounter unique barriers, we do not know how racism and discrimination impact the couple help-seeking process. This study seeks to address this gap and better understand unique barriers in the African American couple help-seeking (AACHS) process via a grounded theory…

Navigating Black Aging: The Biological Consequences of Stress and Depression.

OBJECTIVES: Black persons in the United States are more likely to suffer from social inequality. Chronic stress caused by social inequality and racial discrimination results in weathering of the body that causes physiological dysregulation and biological age being higher than chronological age (accelerated aging). Depression has been linked to both racial discrimination and accelerated aging and accelerated aging has been demonstrated to be higher in Black than White persons, on average. However, we know little about accelerated aging across the life course in Black Americans. METHODS: We use

The Association between Racial Discrimination, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Cardiovascular-Related Conditions Among Non-Hispanic Blacks: Results from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III).

OBJECTIVES: To test the association between racial discrimination and cardiovascular-related conditions and whether PTSD mediates this relationship in a nationally representative sample of non-Hispanic Blacks. METHODS: We used data from the 2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions to conduct logistic regression analyses to examine the association between racial discrimination, PTSD, and cardiovascular-related conditions. We also performed mediation analyses to assess whether the association between racial discrimination and cardiovascular conditions was partly expl
